I must have slept wrong.
I can't think of anything else I did or could have done to throw such a wrench into my lower back and left hip - but I sure felt something wasn't right as I sat in the car yesterday driving myself to the inn.
That hitch in my get-along continued to tighten up as I started in on the laundry and doing all of the routine Tuesday morning post check-out things that happen.
And when I couldn't stand it any longer, when no amount of yoga stretches or back exercises would seem to bring any relief, I called the chiropractor.
They could get me in at 3:30pm. Okay. I can do this.
I can not have my back out of whack this week - I'm leaving for Iceland on Saturday!
The hexies at the top of this post? I've got kits prepped to take with me for airplane and interim stitching time. The one on the right was just finished.
Why is this photo here? It has little to do with this story, but it is something to share at least!
At one point yesterday I thought I'd just lay flat on the fatigue mats in front of the long arm quilting machine, and that was great, until I realized I was going to have to get up from there and drive to town to get to the chiropractor. Uhhhhh.....can I get up? That's how bad.
This is my big summer travel purse.
Do you see that little hole? I did what we are never supposed to do. Things we were always warned against. "Don't Pull The Thread!!!" I thought I could snap a hanging thread....but no...the thread was stronger than that and the seam started to come undone.
Now...how long did I keep dragging this purse around with a hole forming in the top?
WEEKS!
And when did I fix this? More than a week ago, but since I was flat on my back yesterday and don't have a lot to share in this post, I finally remembered I did have something to share...
I didn't even take my stuff out of the purse....it's just a top-stitching thing. For a couple of inches?
Why did I wait so long?
Thread. I needed to actually change the top thread and bobbin thread to match and that was what....too hard of a job??
I guess quilters DO mend things. Under duress. Being forced to change the thread color. Oh me, oh my.
Including changing the thread color this little job took maximum 5 minutes. Tops.
Seriously ridiculous, but it was so far down the list of things I had in front of me that I kept putting it off as not important.
So the purse is fixed. My hexie traveling bag can go right inside for the plane trip (See, threre was a lead in to the hexies at the top of this post after all) and I'll be ready to go. Saturday.
And hopefully my back will be unlocked by then. I have another appointment with the chiropractor tomorrow just to be sure.
This morning - I'm stiff, but not quite as bad.
Cat in the Flowers kits for m 22 Iceland travelers are done!
I'm getting very excited!
There is a bit more of this to happen - but I couldn't resist laying some things out.
If you look closely you'll see a blue floral stripe that has been hanging around since 1990 something. And some fabrics with dots, and a couple of other things that looked "old fashioned" thrown in to break up the plaid on plaid on plaid.
And maybe I would just sew some units together.....
Yes, I put that 1980s little rosebud print in there on purpose.
It reminds me of how far we've come on this journey.
So much more to do yet.
But I'm liking seeing what I envisioned come to life in real time.
This quilt doesn't have a name yet. But it will come.
I think the thing I like the most about string quilts, is that beauty comes from little to nothing.
Amazing comes from simplicity.
I was planning on maybe hand quilting this...but you know what? There is such a thing as too many seams. And I want it done quicker than that.
But I can't wait to walk into the QPO today and see the section that I've laid out on the floor...
I don't think I can spend hours sitting at the machine today. Maybe that was part of my problem even though I have a good ergonomic chair. Too much time making string blocks.
Even though we got in two good road hikes over the weekend?
Notice that I'm avoiding saying it has anything to do with my age at this point...LOL.
I'll finish up the laundry today. I'll make the towel baskets up while Housekeeper Susan works her magic on the rest of the house.
And then it will wait, shiny and clean, for me to get back just before Irene's Sewciologists arrive for their retreat the day after I get back.
And I think I'll just be laying low over the next few days instead of trying to cram everything in.
Mountain Laurel blooming off of my back stoop.
Quiltville Quote of the Day -
The only way to make it through is to continue to find the humor in it.
And if you can't laugh at yourself, you're taking things way too seriously...
Here's to Wednesday where I am promising myself to take it easy today and not do too much...

Oh boy, Bonnie - I’m sure the chiropractor will bring you relief! We are just finishing our big trip to Spain and the Baltic countries. It’s certainly no fun to have back issues, especially while traveling. All the best to you as you begin your adventures - pain-free! Also, your string blocks are looking fabulous and I can’t wait to see what the finished pattern ends up to looking like! 😊
ReplyDeleteI threw my back out twisting to the right to iron blocks. Getting old/quilting is not for wimps. I love your new pattern layout. Judy Scott
ReplyDeleteSimply put: Simplicity! Hope your back gets to feeling better! Have a great trip! See you in the not too distant future! ~Jessica
ReplyDeleteYou are right about that 1980’s rose print. My daughter was born in 1981 Anna I made
ReplyDeleteI’m sorry to hear about your hip and back. I struggle with that same issue. Take it easy when you need to and enjoy all of the rest of your not in pain or aching time.
ReplyDeleteYou truly have my sympathy with your back. On my way to physical therapy this morning for mine. Take it a little easier. Sometimes we all have to weither we like it or not. Which I don't. Truth, I might have been at the machine to long yesterday. That's a secret. Don't tell my therapist or my hubby. Lol.
ReplyDeleteLove the new quilt! Looking forward to the pattern release.
ReplyDeleteOh Bonnie! I have been making strings here and just now looking at your quilt I see you made some with light/dark and some all dark. Um, now ideas are bouncing around in my head. THANK YOU, it means I don't have to dig up more lights, or do I? lol.
ReplyDeleteI made clothes and mended things for years. Now I too dread it and let the mending pile up. In fact, my hubby mends many of his clothes now rather than wait for me to be inspired!
ReplyDeleteThat floral stripe and the blue/white stripe near the top reminds me of mattress or pillow ticking from way back when! LOL
ReplyDeleteLove the pattern the string blocks are forming - but, yes - all those seams! Oh my!
Hope your back is feeling better and you are all fit to sit for your Iceland adventure! Safe travels!
Bertha in Oklahoma, where the weather is rocking and rolling this week!!
I have the blue floral fabric you pointed out! I love sewing string blocks. This looks like a future project for me. Thanks for all you do to keep us inspired!
ReplyDeleteI have it, too. I think I have the 80s rosebud print, too!
DeleteSo sorry your back is giving you problems! If I bend or turn the wrong way I can mess mine up quickly. I hope you get back to feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteLove the Cat In the Flowers embroidery!
By the way, I do not like to mend. You're so right--it only takes a few minutes to repair something but I do not like to do it! :-) Jenny
I love the quilt! Which is a surprise to me because I really don't like the plaid strings, but when they are all put together they look like a kaleidoscope!!! It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWow, Bonnie, back pain is the worst, I know. Hope you feel better soon. I herniated a couple of disks around 10 years ago. Couldn't lay flat, could only sleep sitting at the kitchen table with my head down resting on a couch cushion on the table - for days. To this day I cannot sleep flat on my back, so I sleep in my recliner. Even earlier this year, when I had a pacemaker put in and they were prepping me for surgery I told them about how I could not lay flat. They didn't tell my cardiologist and I was told later that when I came out of the anesthesia they had to hold me down because I kept crying out pain, pain, pain. My doctor didn't know what was going on and only knew I should not have been in any pain from the procedure. She said that eventually they raised me up and then I immediately settled down.
ReplyDeleteTo commiserate about mending, I still have 2 front buttoning sweater blouses I purchased in 1995 that are missing a button on the same midsection spot. I still have the buttons, and still have the sweaters, but have not yet mended them. I blamed it on never having the correct color thread.. Between quilting thread, and machine embroidery thread I probably have a the colors that will match these sweaters now. Only thing is, I tried them on and don't like the way they look on me now.
Lastly, I love, love, love your paper piecing project. I've been wondering how they would come together and your design is just gorgeous!
You're in my Prayers. I hate when my back is out. Ice, Ice Baby! You never know what will trigger a hitch in your get-along. I'm older than you and have to take a rest day between road trips. Feel better!
ReplyDeleteThe blue lagoon in Iceland will be great medicine for any pain. Make sure to stop there!
ReplyDeleteAhhh the little rosebud print. I had it in several y colors, including nursery pink and blue. Cool to see it again. Feel better really soon and enjoy your trip!
ReplyDeleteYuck... that stinks! I hope you get to feeling like you again by the time you get ready to leave!! :-) I'm loving both projects. Today was the kids' last day of school, finally. Tomorrow & Friday is our 2 workdays. Then freedom for a couple of months!! :-)
ReplyDeleteGet some good rest!
I had that 1980`s floral print too! I hope your back gets better, rest up.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the layout for that new quilt my first thought was kaleidoscope. Good luck getting your back to stay put for your trip. A chiropractor gave my husband this tip: Put a magazine or 2 (he gave him national Geo) beneath the low hip. Kept it in place for him during our trip.
ReplyDeleteHi, Everyone! Im a newbie here, but I've been hanging around quilt shops, retreats, shows, and my Bernina and Janome for almost 3 decades now.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I think your blog is amazing and I love the idea of joining a retreat at your place sometime soon. The whole idea reminds me of the wonderful times I spent during my 16 years in Pennsylvania with all my quilt friends, before I was moved to the 'quilting wasteland' of Florida. (Well, it's not quite that bad, it's just 'different' down here).
Reading about your quilt with the rosebud fabric among the plaids, I have a couple of naming ideas...
1. 'From There to Here'
or simply,
2. 'Rosebud'
Anyway, keep doing what you're doing, have a great time in Iceland, and I hope your back is better...
Jen Mittra
Prayers for your back and a great trip that is pain free. Love thr new string quilt you are working on.
