On our way to the airport from mom's in Garden Valley Idaho - the biggest celebration of all was taking place.
There wasn't really anyone around as we began our journey down to Boise about an hour-plus down the mountain.
Just a couple of cars ahead of us, and one big semi truck who turned right while we were turning left -
But you should have heard our cheering from inside the car!
For more than 30 years there has been a need of a stoplight here. Traffic going north and south on Hwy 55 with no stop light made it impossible for any vehicle on Hwy 17 to make a left hand turn - and on holiday weekends, the line to turn left back toward Boise could be miles long.
A stoplight! A working stoplight! Such a small mostly unnoticeable thing - but not to the residents of Garden Valley who dread summer holiday season like the plague.
It wasn't functional on Saturday when we went down to my niece Elizabeth's 14th birthday and soccer game.
It may have been turned on by Monday - but no matter. We saw it Tuesday. And long may it blink from green to yellow to red....hooray!

And yes, mom got her hexie quilt. Her big, giant, beautiful, one of a kind hexie quilt. It was a highlight to present it to her.
On the guestroom king sized bed.
A perfect fit!
(But this thing is giant!)
And to think she hated it so much she was going to throw it away??
No, it's not made with designer fabrics or a fabric "line." These fabrics have been gleaned and gathered over decades and pieced over the span of at least 10 years.
It might not be made in the current rage of fashionable colors. But there is so much of my mom in here.
And I love it all the more for that.
It has all of her favorite things stitched in - and there will never be any doubt as to what my mom valued most. (The popcorn is still my favorite!)
Little house in the woods -
We spent much of our time puttering in the yard (And yes, I brought home another helleborus from her yard to plant at the inn...this time one with a deep purple bloom. I'm hoping it survives. It came home in my backpack - had to be run through the security x-ray twice, and then hand inspected...because...of course. LOL!)
Hexies were stitched through hours of OLD 1970s TV shows.
McMillan & Wife, the old Hawaii 5-0 (Book 'em, Dano!) and episodes of McCloud.
A 4 hour marathon of Gone With The Wind took up much of Sunday afternoon while I stitched...and they both snored in their chairs. LOL!
The next one started.
I stitched all the way from Boise to Atlanta. I napped from Atlanta to Bristol. And we arrived home in Mouth of Wilson about 1am.
I'm moving slow today, but the Muddy Creek Misfits are due to arrive at the inn around 3pm - so I better get a move on.
It's great to be back. It was wonderful to spend time with family, but Virginia is home.
Quiltville Quote of the Day -
Isn't aging such a wonderful thing?
But it lifts my heart to realize that my 1970s playlist is what they'll be playing in my nursing home!

Have a wonderful Wednesday, everyone!

ReplyDeleteWelcome home, Bonnie! I know just what you mean about VA being home. Husband & I started our marriage over 50 yrs ago in the DC area & moved to the Shenandoah Valley 6 yrs ago for retirement. There is something about these mountains. I, too, have been to the Boise area many times over the yrs, to visit a now departed, dear sister. She loved ID!! The mountains were too big for me. We were two crazy quilters who grew up outside ORD in Chicagoland! Love your quote for today!!! How true, how true!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're back home safely from visiting your Mom, and she has her beautiful hexi quilt. It's so pretty, love it! I think she'll sneak naps in the guestroom so she can cuddle with it. :-) Jenny
ReplyDeleteYes, aging is wonderful if sometimes frustrating. But it is so much better than the alternative! And you ar my daughter’s age so I’ up there with your mom. Enjoy your years and keep going.
ReplyDeleteYour mom's quilt is a real treasure - made with love.
ReplyDeleteWelcome Home! So glad you could get family time with Pretty scenery and celebrations. Helebores, I'm gonna have to look it up. 1970's music is my Jam too. And the 1960's.
ReplyDeleteThis post brought up so many memories. My mother grew up in the Boise area, one of her brothers lived there his entire life, another brother lived in Twin Falls in Pocatello, her sister lived away from Boise much of her life, but she and her husband moved back to Boise in the mid-60s after her husband retired. He began to build houses in the Boise area and eventually built a cabin at Grandjean.
ReplyDeleteIn the late 80s and early 90s, several times I drove my mother and stepfather from Portland where we lived to that cabin. We would spend the night in Boise with my aunt and then drive up spend three or four days at the cabin and then back down to Boise.
Your video of the river is wonderful. There’s nothing like listening to water flowing over rocks, looking up at the trees and the beautiful sky in our beautiful world. Unfortunately, that cabin was destroyed in the Grandjean fire, but the memories live on.
Loved seeing that quilt on a bed..I have a hexie one that is very big on 2 sides, so need to get measurements for its bed huh? It has been in the works for probably 10 years or so.
ReplyDeleteWe live in WA and have camped and fished a lot in Northern Idaho. Such a great place.
I thank you so much for your blog. It really makes my morning a pleasure.
I wish all the best for you and your family... Hugs, Sue
So glad you had a good time in Idaho with your mom and family. The light at Banks is a big deal. I use Hwy 17 to get from Boise to Stanley and back. The wait was long, and pulling out into traffic was a leap of faith!
ReplyDeleteWelcome home, Bonnie. Glad you had a good trip and nice to "see" you in my emails this morning. LOL, will "You Light Up My Life" or "Dust in the Wind" be on that '70s playlist, or "Nederlands" and "Running on Empty?" Needless to say, I'm right there with you.... All the best, Cindy W.
ReplyDeleteWhen my IT support person told me they all write down their passwords...I stopped worrying and started writing them down...lol

Love mom's quilt, beautiful!!
Your mom’s quilt is my absolute favorite hexie quilt! It’s a masterpiece. Perfection. Heirloom. Labor of love. Genius!
ReplyDeleteThat green center in one of your hexies is a fabric I cherish. So sad I am running low on it. So neat to see it in your stash too!
So wonderful to see your mom with her quilt again. I hope she loves it now at least a little bit. She lives in a beautiful area of ID. The river video was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWow... what a quilt! I know your Mom will enjoy it for sure. The video of the river was a treat! So glad you made it home. Time for the recovery process! LOL! I'm sure Dave & the fur babies are happy to have you home!
ReplyDeleteI hung batting out on the long arm machine to let it air out & get ready to quilt this weekend. Hopefully it gets here quick!! HA! Have a good evening! :-)
I love your mom’s Hexie. How do you make words? I love that idea.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot of the Barn Quilt. Loved the flying geese on the sides of the barn quilt. Terrific imagination. Had to chuckle at the added geese feature. Love it!
