While Quilters Go Shop Hoppin'!

Yesterday was a wash-out for me.

The meds took the headache away, but also left me feeling a bit fuzzy around the edges and my tummy not quite right.

If you get these kinds of headaches, you know just what I mean.

I was about an hour later than usual showing up at the Inn - Tula chastising me for being late with her breakfast.  LOL!  First smile of the day! She really is a peach.
9 out of 12 ladies were gone for shopping and lunch out - which I love for them.  Thank you thank you thank you for enjoying our local scenery (Gorgeous time of the year for color and beautiful country roads) and supporting our local economy!

I visited a bit and then set into doing something I knew was going to be brain numbingly monotonous - but was about the only thing I could handle in my foggy state.

I have another tile floor quilt on the brain. This time in holiday red.

I want a red/neutral and I want it warm - so the neutrals are more of the creamy variety you see in the top photo of this post.

I've mentioned this before - that I can in no way endorse sewing for Christmas in Spring or Summer - I tend to sew WITH the seasons.

But since November starts next week (!!!) I'm feeling the pull of warm and cozy.

This is also going to help with fixing that messy red shelf.

Yes, I generally hit up the strip stash first - and I did.  But there wasn't enough variety, and not in the size that I needed.

So here is where I am on my quilting journey.

I am turning 63 in 2 months (!!!) and much of my stash is now reaching the 20 year mark if not older.

I need to start using up my YARDAGE, not just working from FQs and strips.

So to increase my variety, I went to the yardage shelves and began cutting off 11" hunks from selvage to selvage to rul through the Accuquilt Studio into the sizes of strips I need.

This would lighten the burden on my over full red shelves and restock the strips in the sizes I need.

I unearthed this gem!

A 2 yard piece at 50 cents per yard.

Those were the days, my friends!

And this is where everything has been laid to rest -

The take up bar on my long arm table.

And I have made a start.

I'll be sewing something for the holidays through the holidays.

As I think more about this - let me ask you.

Do you have a plan for digging into your "deeper" stash and working it into future projects? I know my fabric is aging. Styles change.  But much of my stash is blenders or tone on tones or geometrics that always can work in.

String/strip quilts are great for the stuff that just doesn't seem to work any other way.

I'm to the point where "You can't take it with you" and "No one is going to want this" is at a crossroads.

That's one of the reasons that our Quiltville Winter Mysteries are such great scrap busters, and I want to encourage everyone to hit up their stashes first before they supplement with a quilt shop run.

I fight with the whole idea that there are shops out there waiting for me to drop the colors for this year - and then they dig in to offer "KITS FOR SALE" for hundreds of dollars when they have no idea what the quilt looks like or how much variety is really needed.  It boggles my mind.

Please consider pulling in some of your deep stash in this year's quilt. Give your shelves and bins a bit of breathing room.

And you might find there are fabrics you do love and still love after all - and they are much better used in the quilt, instead of staying on the shelf - no matter their age.

Okay.  Off soap box.

Things I saw in an empty sewing room!

Melinda has this going!

Remaining color in my yard as I returned home.

Lola helping to bind. Sort of.

And this is where we are this morning.  Headache is gone.  I slept all the way through the night and woke up at 8am which is late for me.  But I think I was making up for loss of sleep the night before.

Today?  Hanging with the quilters, perhaps cutting some more neutral/red and easing on in to a nice weekend.

How about you?

I want to thank everyone for the response to yesterday's Ladder Star Gift-Away!

I love your mystery quilts because I have to use my stash. And if I find smaller pieces then I cut them into strips to add to my strips drawers which gives them greater variety. It's a win/win! Nancy S.

  2. I am at the same crossroads...trying to shrink my fabric stash. I quit buying any quantity of fabric almost 2 years ago and it's hardly made a dent. I perused the internet for places to donate and couldn't really settle on any one in particular. I have over a hundred yards of quality (Moda, Riley Blake, etc.) fabric along with assorted precuts I'd like to donate. Does anyone know of a group or maybe someone who was hard hit by the storm in that area that needs to rebuild their stash? I would appreciate any suggestions.

    1. I know that Pat Sloan "I love to make quilts" has charities she sends fabric, tops, and quilts to. She also has a you-tube page channel under her name where she talks about this periodically.

I am also trying to clear out all my fabric into donation quilts and tops. Found a local nonprofit that will take tops, quilts, fabric for mainly kids with health or emotional crises, quiltedlove.org. Tell them Ellen H. Sent you.

    3. Jo Kramer, at Jo's Country Junction, accepts lots of donated fabric and documents very well in her blog the charity sewing groups to which she passes along the fabric.

    5. "LO and Behold" is a quilt shop in NC, https://www.loandbeholdstitchery.com/. they were taking quilts but are on hold right now trying to catch up. I think they would love your fabric after things settle a bit more.

  3. Yes, we gotta use it all! Starting last fall and into 2024, I declared my squares drawers would be used. These are only 2x8x10!!! I supplemented from my partial strips bin, pulling border/sashing fabric from stash and netted 13 twin size quilts all donated to SIHP (Sleep in Heavenly Peace). My partial strips bin is 6x18x22 and contains all my sizes (1.5, 2, 2.5 3, 3.5-4). Any WOF strip remains in its color stack in my stash.

I've been sewing like crazy since retiring 5y ago, putting nearly 1000 yards into finished quilts in the recent 24 months and creating big holes in my stash. I'm a wide backing girl and bought 10 bolts this year and am sewing through #4 already.

Sew sew sew. It's fabulous fall crispy mornings for stitching and sunny chilly afternoons for walking here in Idaho.

    Happy Saturday to all :-)

  4. Ooh red! Can't wait to see what you make with that.
Time is going by fast isn't it? Another week and it's color time!
Yes, I don't care for those kind of headaches, poor Bonnie.
    You feel loopy afterwards, yuk.
    Have a Sparkling day 😊

I rarely ever buy kits or FQ bundles for the mystery quilt. But I realize that a lot of LQS need to stay in business. So I might buy one piece which may be the one constant color that needs more yardage that I have on hand. I look at my stash and see what colors I have to substitute for your colors. I think that’s part of my not wanting a quilt that looks like a lot of other folks’ quilts lol. So, that’s how I use my stash plus try to support my LQS. Looking forward to 10/31! Sue

I have been using all fabric from my stash, it’s very liberating and I have you to thank for that. This weekend I will be putting the final border on my second mystery quilt from 23!

You're my kind of gal...I've got fabric that came over on the Mayflower. And I still keep buying. Can't wait for your next mystery to dig into it. Marilyn S

I totally agree. I've been travelling that road for 20 years with no end in sight. Little did I know that preparing a generous "retirement stash" would not be necessary. Lindah

  11. Thank you, Bonnie, you're saying what I've been thinking. I plan to shop my stash first for this year's mystery. I just turned 69, and in the past couple years have inherited large stashes from quilter friends who have died. Much as I love new fabric, my stash is beyond beyond! So, I'm digging into that 20+ year old stuff!! Love doing mystery quilts!!!

  12. Especially my Quiltville quilts! So snuggly. On the couch, over the end of the bed, in a chair. Love all the Reds. Glad you could sleep in. I did too. Using all Stash for this year. Bring on the colors! 5 days!

I’ve been sewing mostly from my stash for a few years now. When I go into my LQS to buy thread or batting, I always take a look around at the new fabrics, and occasionally something catches my eye that I have to have, but I usually just buy a fat quarter to satisfy the craving, lol! However, I always use stash for backings. They may not be as pretty as new yardage and wide backings, but so be it … it uses up lots of yardage. I try to color coordinate with the top as much as possible, and sometimes I’ll throw in a panel, just to use it up. I’m ready for your new mystery quilt. Have a great weekend! Candy

  14. Bonnie, have you considered offering some of your stash yardage to your retreaters? Seeing some of it used up in other people's quilts could lighten your heart, and certainly getting it off the shelves would ease your mind! Just a thought. Looking forward to seeing your red project take shape!

I love using my stash for your mystery quilts. I usually end up buying a few fat quarters of new fabric to add variety but at least 90% comes from my stash. I’ve been quilting for over 40 years and love seeing my older fabric find a place in a new quilt.

  16. I have been trying to use my stash instead of "saving it". I will be 70 soon and it's time to use it! I remember when you could get deals for .50 a yard! Can't wait for the mystery quilt.

  18. I can relate with the quote... we each have a quilt on the back of our chairs, though he doesn't use his much. We also have one on the couch for the dog to lay on... but haven't brought ourselves to move it since he passed on.
I am loving the idea of a red/neutral quilt. I'm such a slow quilter that I can't sew with the seasons for the season. If I want a Christmas quilt done by that holiday I need to start it in the summer when I am off, LOL! I am really trying not to buy anymore new, that's why I have stopped stalking some of the websites that I have been... it's working! HA! I am looking forward to the colors coming out, & yes, I will be hitting my stash & yardage! I hope you feel better soon, my headaches usually have me out for about a day & a half. Beautiful quilts coming up on the walls!! Have a good weekend! :)

I, too, am at the stage where “You can't take it with you" and "No one is going to want this" although I am WAY ahead of you at 86! We are on a trip visiting our nieces and nephews (1family). We brought 7 quilts and they each picked the one they liked best. I added their names to the label and now my guest room is 7 quilts lighter! I am so happy to be able to share.

  20. I LOVE the idea of several tile quilts......I have made Good Fortune, Frolic and On Grassy Creek so far. Have printed out the patterns for man more, but am most excited for Moonflower to come out!!!

  21. I participated in a Shop Hop this month even though "I didnt NEED anything!" I don't think I have room to store what I did buy. I guess sewing will be on my to-do list for the next while. I'm not retired quite yet but am in that age group.

I try very hard to only use scraps for those Quiltville Mystery. Last year I did splurge and bought enough of the single red - because I didn't have enough in my stash. I can't WAIT until Thursday! Bring on the Mystery!!!!
