Starshine Gift-Away!

It's a Starshine kind of Friday!

And it feels like the last few days of September are yelling "Hurry up and get this out there, before everything turns Orange with October!"

I know my trip to Poland and Italy delayed our usual mid-month PDF release by a couple of weeks, but we are here!  

And I can't wait to see what you do with your own version of Starshine as I know we all have more scraps than we know what to do with, and this is such a fun way to put them to good use.

My inspiration quilt.

A simple 1930's era 6-pointed star baby quilt I fell in love with while teaching in Michigan. It came home with me - I just loved the solid blue equilateral triangle star points and the pops of color here and there as star centers.

Of course, depending on where you place your focus, there are neutral areas as star centers too. 

It's wonky, it's uneven, and it is precious beyond words.  And I knew I had to use it as my jumping off spot in some way.

This journey all started with strings of course!

The pieces in the child's quilt are TINY.  And the quilt includes hexagon shapes and diamonds as well as equilateral triangles.

My thought was to break it all down and work with only one simple shape - equilateral triangles in a larger size where I could use my strings.

Phone book page (any paper will do or no paper at all if you wish) foundations were covered with strings.

I love the pops of color in my wild and crazy neutral-ish background, but if you want yours to be a bit more subtle, turn some of the fabrics over so the backside is now the front.

All those fun neutrals!

Oranges, blues, purples, greens, yellows, pinks and reds as well!

Must haves:  Any 60 degree equilateral triangle ruler.  There are many out there.  You may already have one at home.  *NOTE*  This is NOT Tri-Recs. Tri Recs is a different angle and will not work for this pattern.

Optional but helpful:

GEasy Point Trimmers for trimming the corners of the triangles for easy alignment and greater accuracy when sewing.

Starshine is quilted in sand colored thread in an edge-to-edge design called Simple Burst by Crystal Smythe of intelligentquilting.com.

It shows up better against my scrappy blue backing!

And of course I bound it in scrappy blue!  2'' cut strips joined on the diagonal and added to the quilt with 1/4'' seam so as not to chop off the star points at the edge of the quilt.

I love a narrow binding when the piecing goes all the way to the edge!
