As we worked our way up Tracy Arm, the fjord leading toward Sawyer glacier – the wonder of the surrounding wilderness brought about a sense of awe and reverrence amongst everyone on the ship.
We traveled silently, slowly making our way past the floating chunks of ice ----the air turning colder the closer we got to the glacier itself.
Big and Blue ---this is Sawyer Glacier in the center of the photo.
We were lucky enough to have the sun peeking through the clouds – and the reflection of the mountains in the icy water was beautiful.
Sawyer Glacier was as far as we could go. The ship turned slowly, all the way around – and we headed back out the way we came in watching the ice float all around us.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was raised in AK in the 50s and 60s, you could really touch Portage Glacier ice. Now it has moved miles and miles back into the valley and it is harder to get close to. Really really blue.

ReplyDeleteGreat pics but they cannot convey the sound and cold when you are seeing and feeling and hearing the calving of a glacier. I have never experienced anything like it. Awesomeness!

ReplyDeleteOur ship spent the whole day at the glacier, turning completely around so all passengers could enjoy the beauty of the place. The crew barbecued chicken skewers that we ate with caesar salad on the back of the ship. We froze our buns off while we were eating and looking at the glacier! But it was absolute fun!!!
