Boone, NC is a busy little place, especially on a 3 day holiday weekend when the weather is glorious.
Of course there is hiking up Grandfather Mountain, or fishing on one of the many beautiful streams in the area. There is white water rafting and bicycle riding. We saw lots of couples on Harleys just out enjoying the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains ---and there were shoppers and browsers galore!
Some places were closed on Sunday, but some were in full swing. There was an antique mall that we passed on our way through Boone, and I had mentioned that I’d like to stop on our way back just in case – just for a “look see” ---
I was afraid I was going to hear moaning and grumbling from the driver’s seat, but miracle of all miracles, I did NOT!
You see, DH has never wandered an antique mall with me before, not ever. And I can understand why ----on the flip side, it would be like me having to spend gobs of time being completely bored in a bicycle shop, or a golf shop. I completely get it, really I do!
Mention to me that we are stopping at "Dicks Sporting Goods" for just a minute, and you will hear ME moan and groan from the passenger seat!
As soon as we entered the mall, THIS was displayed in the entry! There were oodles of people, and it was hung on this big rustic branch ((They do a LOT of stick/branch furnishings in Boone!)) and I couldn’t get it down….but oh, it’s a “Cut Glass Dish” pattern!
Looks like it’s had quite a bit of sun fading – that is the SAME sashing fabric throughout – it’s just really faded in parts. Maybe the deep dark red area was up against a wall or tucked under or something? Love the primitive fan quilting on this one! I’m guessing it’s from right around 1900. Mourning prints. Yummy! ((I bet the words “mourning” and “yummy” really are not supposed to be used together…LOL!))
We rounded a corner to find this poly double-knit beauty. The piecing on it was very nice! But MAN, this puppy is HEAVY! It makes me think of all the poly pant suits that my step-grandma wore ---
A beautiful drunkard’s path in solid aqua and cream. Beautifully done. See the cable quilting in the border? Oh, I LOVE cables! It’s very hard to guess the era on a quilt made with solids, but I do know this color of aqua ((It’s not the Nile green of the 1930s)) was popular in the 1950s. Any other guessers out there?
A very stringy star with a HUGE table cloth check as alternate diamonds…..doesn’t it make you want to pack up a picnic and go enjoy the day down by the creek?
I spied this folded quilt on a shelf and got all excited!
Not only was there ONE on the shelf, but a matched pair! I couldn’t see breaking up a matched pair of quilts – so I left them both
1960s and early 1970s calicoes! And I so love that bright green path!
How many of us remember having school dresses made out of these prints?!
Amidst all the planned ones, are some very fun, über scrappy ones! I love that hex on the upper left with the purple and green in it.
The fabrics were just SO SO great! Hello to my early childhood memories!
Some quilts were just simply very humble….blue feedsacks, and melon/green square in a square blocks. Thick batting, big fans, quilted quickly for winter warmth --
And some quilts…OH BOY!
Some quilts just have such BIG problems that it will NEVER QUILT OUT! LOL!!!! The fabrics in this one were great --- left overs from skirts and dresses and other household sewing – see all the gingham checks? LOVE THOSE!
BUNCHES of PROBLEMS!! LOL!!
I love seeing these ---they make my worst mistakes look not so bad ;c)
THIS one was my favorite of all. Carpenters star in 1950s fabrics – oh, this was so cool! But the price was more than I was willing to pay, so I’ll have to make my own. I loved how some of the prints resembled grandpas pajamas or boxer shorts…and I do love how the red/gold center stars tie everything together. There WILL be one of these in my future..
There were some primitive woolie things too ---I wish I knew the history behind this one! And no, that cat is NOT real --- ;c)
What also amazed me is this:
This is like my bridal shower from 1981 on those shelves!
I remember all those orange, avacado, brown containers! And that pickle keeper on the far left middle shelf. Was your wedding sponsored by tupperware too? LOL!
((Once you put pickles in there, you could never get the pickle smell out of the plastic!))
Loved the old cards of buttons….
And no, this beautiful 301 did not come home with me – already have 2 of them ;c)
((Besides, DH was in tow, remember?!))
The most precious of all…was watching DH with this stack of books, and remembering that HE had these as a child. His mom has been gone since December 1983. And all of those memories of her reading to him when he was little came flooding back.
Childhood memories are priceless.
And he will probably shoot me for posting this…..if you don’t hear from me after this, send a search party!
All in all it was a fabulous day to getaway to the mountains. I hope we do it again soon!
Today Lisa is coming over to load her Tshirt quilt on the machine – we plan to get up to a lot of fun over here in the Basement – it’s been too long since she has been over ----
Happy Memorial Day, Everyone!
some wonderful finds in that antique store - I get my hubby to go through them once in awhile

I just discovered the other day that you & I are the same age. I just celebrated my 50th birthday on the weekend.
ReplyDeleteSounds like we were married around the same time too & yes I had many of those pieces of Tupperware!! The brown jug, the flat dark orangy brown rectangle next to the pickle jar.
Funny that the Tupperware lasted longer than the husband!! LOL
I am so lucky to have found my Prince & that we love going to antique shopping together.
Love the quilts, thank you for sharing.

Bonnie, you live in one of my favorite places! I would love to be able to take that lazy drive on a weekend, stop for a picnic in the woods, stroll thru an antique store or two (I want those Tupperware S&P shakers again!), and still sleep in my own bed that night. A very, very pretty part of our country...I don't get there often enough.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Bonnie, for the trip down memory lane. Yes on the Tupperware; yes on the 70's fabric in clothing; yes on the books; too funny. I really loved the aqua and white quilt...beautiful; I liked the simplicity of the feed sack Square in a square as well. The carpenter's star was lovely. Glad you had a good day with DH, you deserved the time away and together.

Thanks for sharing.....felt like I was there with you. I just turned "60" (just wait, that was has a real bite to it. 50 was a "cake walk"....lol) I used to sell Tupperware during that time. I still have the gold colored Tupperward "vegetable steamer" (bottom shelf). My friend used her's all the time for microwaving veggies that turn out awesome. Used to have one, but had gotten rid of it long time ago. Cleaned out my Mom-in-Love's house and we were starting the garage sale in which we hadn't had a chance to go through all of the things yet. One of the ladies picked up the top lid to the gold colored veggie steamer, and I immediately said "that's not for sale...sorry"....then proceeded to rummage through the boxes until I found the other pieces. Love it..and it does steam veggies well. So, I'm thinkin you might have to go back soon and make that purchase......just sayin! Have a great Memorial Day everyone
ReplyDeletestill selling tw! lol, I did too!
DeleteMy hubby never used to like the antiques places either, until he saw they were loaded with old tools, vintage golf clubs, and his favorite thing to find are the vintage postcards from our town. That's the first thing he'll look for, and will spend the entire time going through the 'W's, just hoping to find one from Waterford! lol I love it that he's found his nitch in a shop I could spend all day in! Whew! Good thing! And those quilts were gorgeous! I loved that first one especially!
ReplyDeleteAlmost forgot.....I loved seeing all that Tupperware....I still use my pickle keepers for celery and carrot sticks! Gawd! They are ancient! Now I am, too! lol
ReplyDeleteI am headed to that same area in a few weeks. I would love it if you could tell me if there are any quilt shops around.
ReplyDeleteThere is at least one in New Market, which is on 421...the main drag in Boone. It's in a shopping center with Lowe's Foods, Big Lots, and a few restaurants.
DeleteOMG, I still have some of that red calico in my deep down stash, buried where I won't be tempted to use but still too much to discard
ReplyDeleteHave to laugh, at the Tupperware picture as I was wondering if Tupperware in the new Fiestaware at antique malls.... I love Fiestaware and that is what I look at when strolling such malls.
ReplyDeleteThen you talk about bridal shower and I think, bridal shower poowie... just open my kitchen cabinets and there is the colored stuff.
I never, ever, ever come across such wonderful finds in my antique shops! I can count on one hand the number of quilts that I come across as well. Thanks so much for sharing a great shop! And you didn't come home with any quilts?
ReplyDeleteI would give anything to have DH go through an antique shop with me, or anything for that matter..... What a wonderful weekend.

I get my antiquing fix by reading your blog. My score this weekend was three brand new with tags XXXL men's shirts at Goodwill. Wheee. I deboned them easily after watching your video.
ReplyDeleteHey Bonnie! I still have some of those "vintage" Tupperware pieces in my cupboard. LOL! Never did get the pickle keeper though.

I have been inside that antique mall several times. We like to visit the Boone area. And we always eat at The Daniel Boone Inn. Really good family style served meals. My husband likes to look in antique shops too so there is no problem getting him to stop.
ReplyDeleteMy DH and I just love to go to garage sales and flea markets with an antique store thrown in for fun. Sometimes we come home with lots of treasures and sometimes it is just us with empty hands, but what ever we have a great relaxing day and we look forward to doing it again next time. Enjoy your jaunts.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the pics from your antique shopping. The Tupperware tea pitcher in the upper left is just like the one I got as a wedding gift. I still use it 38 years later and also have a few of the harvest gold tumblers that came with it. The Carpenters Star is beautiful, totally looks like a Bonnie quilt!

ReplyDeleteI live right outside of Boone in Deep Gap. Where exactly is this located? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI HAVE that Tupperware pitcher in the upper left of the picture....AND the gold glasses on the shelf next to the bottom!!! LOL Ahh, the good ole days!!
ReplyDeleteLoved seeing all your beautiful photos!!
ReplyDeleteI think that was one of your best antique mall tours ever! I'm lucky -- my husband really likes antiques, so it's easy to get him into antique malls.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bonnie for always sharing your adventures with us!! I had some of that tupperwear too! Scary that it's considered a collectable now!
ReplyDeleteI was JUST in Boone, NC Saturday afternoon! We were traveling back from Ohio and decided to detour onto the parkway...we stopped at Grandfather Mountain and had a great time! I will def be blogging some pics of Boone, NC in the next few days! I loved the little guitars and church's, etc made from branches that the gas stations/honey stands were selling! So neat to read your post, knowing I was JUST there!!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun day in that antique place. We were in Boone a year or so back and drove up to the top of Grandfather Mountain.....WHOA....there are some wicked curves on the road to get up there!!!
ReplyDeleteLoved reading this today. Your thoughts brought back lots of memories, too. The 60's calicos - my grandmother's quilts; the tupperware - OMG, I still have some of those pieces!!; the beautiful quilts that you found and your thoughts about them. Your husband reading the childhood books - beautiful. I'm glad you had a great day together.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I am just a few months older than you, and I really smiled when I saw those bright paintbox colours from the 60's - brought back many happy childhood memories.
ReplyDeleteTupperware pickle keeper! I bet if I dug around in my mom's basement long enough, the one we had when I was a kid would turn up.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love that first quilt you posted but I love the more muted colors sometimes. That 301 looked in very nice shape, but I know about having multiples myself. Matter of fact, if you ever decide you want a table for a 301 longbed, let me know...I have the table but no machine, so I'd love to see it go to a good home.
ReplyDeleteI need to get busy on something before the weekend is gone!

What a great antique mall!!!! I've been to a few of them adn this one looked really clean. LOVED all the old tupperwear. It looked like they were still in great shape. hard to find that!!! And when you said there were two of those quilts I thought for sure you bought both home!!!!
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing!
I got married in '76 and a lot of that Tupperware from your antique shop is still on my shelves!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could go to that store -- I would love to have a 301.
Thanks for sharing all the quilt pictures. I never find stuff like that when I'm window shopping.
I had that book. He has good taste.
ReplyDeleteUgly secret time: I STILL own some of those exact Tupperware parts! Notice I won't sign my name and admit it!
ReplyDeleteAww! Seeing your DH hubby with that book is so sweet. I read to my kids and I hope they remember it, too. And what a guy to tag along with you to the antique mall!!
ReplyDeleteSome great old quilts--and yes, that looks like my bridal shower bootie! : )
ReplyDeleteYes, 34 years ago a co-worker of my wife had a Tuperware Shower and I think we got a good $200 of that stuff. Think we still use a few of the piece that did not get sat on a hot burner or the lids cracked or warped in the dish washer. Think you can still get replacement lids for some. Maybe we should put them in an antique shop - are they worth as much as we paid for them??? Yes, wish we had the history of the quilts - the stories they could tell.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the little field trip! I never get to go to places like this and it's so much fun to see all the great quilts! Your just so entertaining! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing - looks like a really GREAT shop.
ReplyDeleteHave to admit that the tupperware looks just like my cupboard here in South Africa. Isn't it great to know that both Tupperware and Quilting are so international. LOL!
I liked how the first quilt had faded to soft colors. Just curious--what was the price range of the patched (not wooly) quilts?
ReplyDeleteI do find it amazing that those 'old' plastic containers still work and the 'new' ones you get now are NOT worth the $ you pay!! Just sayin!!
ReplyDeleteI so enjoy reading your blog every morning, Bonnie, and appreciate all the tips, techniques, tutorials, etc.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, thanks for posting this, it's hard to get my hubby into an antique shop too. I love the first quilt, so I wrote down the pattern and drew it out on paper, so simple yet so pretty too.
ReplyDeleteI do so love reading your blog, so please keep it up even with your busy schedule.

Really liked looking at all those quilts you found at the antique store. I could spend all day in a store like that...........
