HA! I love plays on words…..and I’ll start this post by talking about a few things as reminders.
TOMORROW is our last “Mystery Monday Link-Up” post for Orca Bay! If you have been working on Orca Bay and wanted to post your progress with us in the linky, you will have that chance tomorrow, so write your post, and link it up! If you finished your top and linked it earlier --- would you still link it again? I’d like to get as big a showing of Orca Bay quilts as we can get since this is the last time I’ll be doing a link-up for this quilt. Whatever stage you’ve reached, even if you are just beginning --- please join us and link up!
Also….as this posts I do believe the Super Bowl Sew-a-thon on twitter is still in full swing. I forgot to re-mention it earlier, but you can check out the details in this post HERE. It sounds like a lot of fun. I wish I were joining you, but I’m on my way to Annapolis, MD – so I’ll catch you from there!
And now for the LITTLE DETAILS part!
As you can tell from the picture at the top of the post, I came across a quilter who made me feel like MY hexie project was too big and on the normal side!
Holy. Hexagons. Batman!! Would you look at the size of these?!
How many hundreds of basted hexagons do you think are in this one little zip lock bag?! The crazy quilter even told me the story of how easy it is to LOSE a full bag of basted hexagons like this ---- she’s done it…poof…the whole bag was gone never to be seen again…I had to sit down due to heart palpitations at this point!
And just for comparison…Here is a section of MY hexie project…a full rosette of her hexies is still smaller than ONE of my hexies. I don’t think I could even SEE to baste these!
Isn’t this amazing?
Yep, it’s all in the LITTLE details!
And I thought yours were small compared to mine! I can see her basting is a bit different too. All the extra fabric remains on the backside. But it only takes three stitches to hold them together.
ReplyDeleteAwesome hexies! Both of you!
I did buy one of those scrapbooking punches. They are really trick!
Subee who IS watching the SB and can type at the same time!
ADMIRABLE!!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness..... Bonnie, I saw your hexie quilt in person and really thought about doing something like that - maybe following a x-stitch pattern. And you know, I really dislike hand work but your's is so beautiful I thought about it anyway. But.... Those itty bitty hexies must be about the size of my pinky nail. I don't know that I'd even have the patients to iron the fabric around the papers......
ReplyDeleteWOW!!
Karen
I must know what the size of the tiny hexies are.... Please oh pretty please. Oh and where do you get the templates???
ReplyDeleteOne of the ladies in our guild came back from the quilt show in Japan with those itty bitty hexi's. They are only a 1/4 inch wide. She did about 50 of them, and then gave them away in the guild meeting, because she said she now realizes how crazy she was to even buy them. She didn't want to make a million or so just to have a tiny table mat. They were really adorable though.
ReplyDeleteBonnie I thought your hexies were tiny but those are just incredible.!!!
ReplyDeleteI thought my hexi's were tiny at 3/4 inch but those are oober tiny. Does she have a blog. I would love to follow her progress. I started my hexi quilt when my grandfather was in hospice this past fall. He said he loved it. I was making it for him but he is gone now so I am making it for me. It will then go to one of my kids when I am gone. I would post a picture of what I have done if I knew how. Thank you Bonnie for being such a huge inspiration to so many of us.
ReplyDeleteI may be in the minority here, but honestly I think they are too small. As I get older and my eyesight wanes I want to be able to save my eyes for as much sewing in the future as possible :)
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand you could cut your ugly fabrics so small that they'd be pretty again ;)
I love your hexies because the size of them shows off the different fabrics and for me, the fabrics make the quilt (and the memories!) However, I applaud anyone who is hooked to hexies!
I sound like a bi-polar hexer LOL.
I am working on a quilttop consisting of about 2600 hexies that are 1 1/4" wide... (might get a bit "bigger" though since I bought way too much spare fabric and the one I am making this quilt for appears to want it a bit bigger now...) I already thought that my size of hexies is almost too small, but 1/4" is just crazy.
ReplyDeleteI have seen a woman working on 1/4" hexies at a quiltshow last May - that was actually when I decided to give hexies a try as well. I started my project in June 2011 (vacation at the beach is just not my cup of tea, so I spent most of my holidays trying to figure out the fastest way to baste those hexies) and then I didn't have the time to work on that project until this January - and boy, I spent quite a few hours on that since I started over again.
I'm half way through with basting the hexies now (taking a look into the box where I store all the basted hexies makes me smile).
Bonnie, reading your blog every day helps me to get my fingers busy again every day and it definitely motivsates me to go on stitching even if my fingers are sore :) Thanks for being such an inspiration!
