It’s only a SMALL problem!!

The guys have been hard at work putting in the new floor….

Everything has gone well ---- some areas are tricky, cutting out parts so that things fit around the built in kitchen desk, around door jambs and other areas….

Just when we thought we had it all done and were putting everything back into place….

Houston ----we have a PROBLEM!

Even with removing two layers of old vinyl ---with the addition of the new floor, the fridge is now too tall to fit underneath the cabinet above it…LOL!

I think I will be hearing a lot of dremmeling in the near future to shave some of that cabinet off……

Just when we thought we were home free!

house 133

But it’s looking good, isn’t it?  Even IF the fridge is in the middle of the floor because it won’t fit back where it’s supposed to?!

I can live around a fridge in the middle of the floor ----not a problem!

Due to all this home remodeling stuff, there will be no Quilt-Cam tonight...but remember, I will be doing it tomorrow afternoon, Sunday at 2pm Eastern!

  5. Your floor looks wonderful. Actually had the same problem with my fridge and upon inspection, the cabinet was surprisingly easy to move up a bit. We undid the screws at the back inside the cabinet and inched it up. The cabinet is now a bit higher than the rest, but with the fridge filling the space it doesn't look funny at all. We had to touch up the exterior of the cabinet a bit but it worked! Good luck!

  7. doing home fix it's can be such a problem at times - I think we have done it all and it is time to do more - we have been in this house for 31 years now and it was old to start with - would rather redo than have a house payment every month!

  8. See if the refrigerator feet can be adjusted down slightly. They all have feet so you can level them. Perhaps they're up a little higher than they need to be? ::fingers crossed::

  16. Bonnie... we have a spot like that in our house.... the dishwasher did not fit under the counter when previous owners added tile flooring. What they did was NOT put tile under the dishwasher and hid that fact with some molding. We had to replace the dishwasher a couple years ago and that's how we discovered it.

  17. Your cabinets and counter-top look a lot like the ones I just had put in. We didn't have a a problem with the fridge; we have a problem with the walls! The people before us used a paper-backed vinyl wallpaper, and when we peeled it off, the paper stayed behind. It takes me a couple hours to remove a couple square feet of it, so it is being done in stages. I hope to finish it before the end of the year, then I think we will put up tile on the walls. It appears that they used wallpaper because the walls are all different substrates - there are at least two different color paints, and some bare plaster, and some place that will need spackling to even out the surface. What a mess!

  18. HEHE, we had that problem once before when we took up the linoleum and laid down tile, took the cabinet off the wall, and took the hand saw to it and cut off 3/8" and re hung the cabinet. Ta Da! The new floor looks great!

  23. Been there, done that too. When we purchased our beach house the contract said they had to leave the frig - problem was we didn't specifically state which one - there was a spare in the utility room. The one in the kitchen was taken and the other one didn't fit - we spent the first weekend at our beach house walking back and forth across the deck each time we needed something from the frig - my husband had to remove a cupboard and trim the overhead ones before we could move the frig ... argh!!! We laugh about this all the time - it was a fun first night in our beach house.

  26. We had to trim back drywall in our refrigerator nook when we bought a new, bigger refrigerator. I'm sure your guys can get that cabinet trimmed off and fridge in place before Christmas. Looks good!

  27. Hey ... you never know ... middle-of-the-floor fridges may be the new trend in 2013. Certainly, its more accessible! Dremels are the best tool EVER invented! LOVE the kitchen and the new floor!

  32. This looks fantastic! Great job! Great husband! Maybe the refrigerator's legs are too high, but I bet your husband has already thought of that since he is so handy!

  33. Your floor looks great! Hope the solution to the glitch is an easy one. We are still cleaning old adhesive off the cement floor in our kitchen getting ready for the new ceramic tile to be installed in January. The floor under the fridge has been cleaned and the fridge is back in place for now. I got tired of walking around it while it was in the middle of the room. You will have a beautiful home in time for Christmas! Merry Christmas and enjoy all of your re-do's!

  34. That floor looks so nice. We had to do that to a cabinet over our fridge when we bought a new fridge and it was just a bit too tall for the opening. It works out. Small price to pay for such a pretty floor! : )

  37. It is the home project domino effect one thing effects another just like a line up of dominos. Our neighbor was moving and we bought their refrigerator wheeled it right over, it fit through the front door but not the door way into the kitchen we had to take it back out remove the doors of the refrigerator any way after way more work than it should have been we have a much better refrigerator with auto ice in the door no more ice trays.

  40. That looks like the floor my husband put in our kitchen about 18 months ago. I'm still loving it-so easy to clean. Having a live-in handy man is a blessing.

  41. You guys are very BRAVE to do this three days BEFORE Christmas. LOL You have the patience of Job, Bonnie.

  42. take the legs off the bottom of the fridge, they are they to level it and should unscrew to give you the space you need.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Bonnie, your kitchen looks beautiful! Too bad about the fridge, but as the ugly step-sister in Cinderella said, you can MAKE it fit! Merry Christmas!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Love the new floor. By any chance do the legs on the fridge adjust? Maybe a couple or three turns would fix the problem.

  45. Love the new floor too! At first I thought it was a crazy idea to remodel the kitchen so close to Christmas but this proves that Dave is a genius!

Have a wonderful Christmas Bonnie and family. So glad you have some quality time at home with the family before the next teaching trip. We are so grateful for what you do for us!

  46. OOOHHH, that is so familiar!! When we moved into a "new" house, our refrigerator was too WIDE to fit into the space. We were ready to remodel the kitchen, till I came up with the easier and better idea to swap the oven (that was next to the refrigerator?!) and dishwasher. Now the oven was on an outside wall and the diswasher - with it's smooth top- next to the refrigerator! The counter was a much cheaper alternative. We survived a kitchen floor re-do in December last year. Nice to have it for Chritmas!

  48. Your floor is beautiful. It's kind of like the upscale cousin to my kitchen's vinyl floor - same colors, just better! (Just a wee bit jealous, can you tell? LOL) We had to buy a smaller than desired refrigerator this fall because of the size of the opening. Good thing it's just the two of us because I didn't have the heart to think about moving/modifying cabinets. The combination of size restriction and color requirement (bisque) drastically reduced the selection possibilities too. Probably just as soon forget that little episode!
