I about did the happy dance of joy in the aisle of first class on my flight to San Diego ---- but thought better of it. The last thing I want is for a US Marshall to detain me for inappropriate behavior and scissor wielding!
Here’s the quilt parts laid out in on the floor! The bottom left corner is ready to attach.
Here it is just laid into position. Anyone want to count the hexies in this section for me? I ran out of time! I just wanted to stitch them together, not know how many there actually were!
On Thursday, I had some time to sit and stitch and got it about half way sewn on before it was time to leave to drive up to Misson Viejo.
Here I am at half way….see that big gap still left to do? I finished it in the car on the way up to the Beach Cities Quilt Guild meeting! YEAH!!
So where are we now? We start the next section:
Look at you go! It's going to be amazing!
ReplyDeleteWOW! This quilt is going to be stunning!
ReplyDeleteMy hat is off to you! I am working on a few hexagons myself. Are yours one inch or one and 1/2 inch? I just got an accuquilt go for Christmas and am able to cut the fabric out more easily and in all different sizes, but I like the middle size the best. I hope to someday have something like the size of your quilt. I only sew mine in front of the television or other down times with no book. Please keep us up to date!
ReplyDeleteYikes! Your hexagon quilt is so cool. Such diligence and patience. Can't wait to see the finished product.
ReplyDeleteWow Bonnie, ot is absolutely beautiful! And much bigger than I anticipated!(But you are known for making big quilts...)
ReplyDelete"The last thing I want is for a US Marshall to detain me for inappropriate behavior and scissor wielding!" You crack me up, woman! The hexies are looking great....keep on plugging along :-)
ReplyDeleteOMG that is gorgeous. I not only admire your pattern, but that you haven't snatched yourself bald yet. This would be one (if mine) that would only use on Sunday's and special days because of all the work. It's stunning and a cup of coffee to boot. Wow
ReplyDeleteIt is BEAUTIFUL Bonnie. Thanks for sharing your progress.
ReplyDeleteMaryella
I counted 344 neutrals give or take a few. I should have blown the pucture up bigger.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks really interesting with only the two background sections. Unusual and unexpected.
ReplyDelete"Count"? You had to say "Count"????!!!!
ReplyDelete464, that includes the red outer border on both sides into the darkest hexies on the interior. The OCD always kicks in when someone says "Count".
It is beautiful, Bonnie. Now I think you ought to do a pool where all your followers say when you will finish this quilt. I am in for October 19, 2012. The prize could be all the papers you used to do YOUR hexies!! :>)

ReplyDeleteThat's amazing
ok so now I have to do a hexi I have been thinking on it but now WOW yours is stunning
ReplyDeletegorgeous - did you make the pattern up or following instructions from some where? great way to use up scraps. I haven't made a hexie quilt in years.
ReplyDeleteKaren
It looks so great. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteSonja
Wow ... That's fabulous ... now I want to make one!
ReplyDeleteWhat a BEAUTIFUL quilt!!! That is a lot of hard work! Great Job!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the air marshall would have understood once you showed off that gorgeous quilt. Iit is a stunning example of what you can accomplish in small-ish bits of time.

ReplyDeleteCathedral windows?
ReplyDeleteWow that's coming along nicely. You were just starting that section when we cruised in August. Next project should be a cathedral windows. I so want to make one to use up scraps. Kendra
ReplyDeleteWOW!
ReplyDeleteWOW --- Your patience and talent really shine through in this quilt Bonnie.
ReplyDeleteOnce again friend, do you sleep? Have little elves working to cut pices for you? Amazing quilt by an amazing lady.

Hello Bonnie,
ReplyDeleteit is just WOW!!!! Beautiful!
By the way I think there are 476 Hexies in that section ;o)
What to do when this is finished?
Starting an new one of corse!
xxx Doris
You're doing a great job, Bonnie, I admire your tenacity. By now I would've said "hexie wid it!"
ReplyDeleteme again, mistake, its "only" 464 Hexies ( I think).
ReplyDeleteDoris :o)
Hats off to you Bonnie. I know how long it takes to sew these together, and you are doing a beautiful job.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks pretty cool just like it is!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Bonnie, my small attempt at hex's pales in comparison ;)
ReplyDeleteBonnie that is amazing! Just gorgeous, and what patience you must have! I have been working on a Grandmothers Flower Garden off and on for 10 years and the hexies are way bigger than these. I bow to the master... :)
ReplyDeleteWow! Your hexie quilt is sooo amazing. I really don't know how you put them together so quickly. I made one diamond and it took me HOURS to sew it together!
ReplyDeleteMove on to diamonds when you're done with this? I'm sure the hand quilting is going to take a while though. Probably not as portable however.
ReplyDeletesimply stunning!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I am not sure there are more words :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Love that pattern, also. Our quilt guild program this month was on "Hexies". Not sure I would have the patience to do a quilt this way though.
ReplyDeleteWOW...that is awesome! Got an idea of what to do with it...make a slip cover for that big screen TV beside you...LOL Can't wait to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteThis is a stunning quilt....for some reason I thought it was a SMALL quilt but looking at you in the picture holding it, I get the full perspective. IT IS FANTASTICAL!!! WOW.
ReplyDeleteI have been watching this hexie quilt grow. It just gets more beautiful as you continue to work on it. Awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteStunning! I love it so much that I am in the process of stitching one in blues and browns. When you finish this masterpiece, you can start one using diamonds and piece stars. That's my plan although it'll be a looong time before I get there.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to wonder if you have some secret super power to get so much done and so beautifully too. Well done.
It is a stunner, Bonnie. I know what you can do when it is finished...I'll send you my hexie UFO and you can finish it!! : )
ReplyDelete...and I know you worked on it during the guild meeting on Thursday night so it must be bigger now..
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited I will see you in less then an hour at a class!
Absolutely stunning!!!
ReplyDeleteWoman, I don´t envy you :) Last yaer I finished a hexagonquilt. There were 3 - 4 000 hexagons and I still have some left. Maybe I should get inspired by you......Your quilt is beautiful!

Geez... I have been working on a hexi-quilt for about a year now and I haven't even gotten half as far (compared to the number of finished and stitched together hexies...)
ReplyDeleteI wish I was as fast as you are (and I wish I had your skills when it comes to selecting fabrics for the scrappy look)
Wow! 8-O That is awesome! :-)
ReplyDeleteso gorgeous bonnie and what an accomplishment...what is time when the result is as beautiful as this
ReplyDeleteJust one word - AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE this hexi quilt! It is amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteBonnie I think it's absolutely OUTSTANDING! I have been working on my Grandmother's Garden for three years with no end in sight. Keep on going....

ReplyDeleteWOW. This is aboslutely amazing. Do you know how many hexies you have used till now? It looks fantastic so keep on going. Looking forward to follow your progress...:-))
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing the picture with us.
ReplyDeleteWOW!!!!!!!!! FANTASTIC!!!! Love from Norway.
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOODNESS It is stunning!
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a hexi quilt with this setting, and I LOVE IT! I have always wanted to make a hexi quilt, but was afraid it would look horrible since I had to hand piece it, (I am not very patient or all that keen or practiced at hand sewing)............but you know what? I think you've converted me!
I can't wait to see this finished, it looks like a tile floor somewhere in Morocco........gorgeous!
Sherri
Ummmm,if I *know* you, you will think of something!
ReplyDeleteLove it! The colors are perfect for the design! I'm not sure I'd have the patience to do that many hexagons. Thanks for showing us the picture, and I can't wait to see it when it's finished.
ReplyDeleteBonnie - it is just so gorgeous - the range of fabrics make it shimmer and come alive - what a wonderful thing to achieve - one small piece, one small stitch at a time - inspirational.
ReplyDeleteLooks fantastic - scissors on an areoplane, you can not have them on Australian flights - a sewing needle can be hard to take on board, then you need a Clover cutter worn as a brooch. Look forward to seeing quilt completed.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is fantastic. I've put aside my hexie project after doing about 100, but now I want to pull it out again. I can't believe you take the whole quilt top with you on the plane - I thought you only took it on road trips.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I love your hexie project. It's gorgeous. Did you draw your design out on graph paper first? sandi1100@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteWow! That is just gorgeous! But, wow is that a lot of hexies! I'm not so sure that I would have enough patience for something like that!
ReplyDeleteThat is SO FABULOUS looking. I would never be able to get myself to do that much hand piecing. What a beautiful design. I love how you even made the background look interesting. I always end up working in the quilts that I can piece relatively quickly. I even fall behind on my paper pieced projects. My hat is off to you. candacequilter@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I have been following your blog ever since I discovered Quiltville.com several years ago. I LOVE IT!! Please keep being "chatty-Bonnie".
ReplyDeleteI had been following several of the same links from your site and now you have dropped them. What's up? I don't know Subee's blog link or Jo's. There were a couple of others but I don't know what the addresses were. Please put them back up.

Absoulty Beautiful!!!!
ReplyDeleteWow. Just wow.
ReplyDeleteWow. Just wow.
ReplyDeleteI just learned how to do this about three weeks ago. I first ordered 200 1" hexagons on line to start. Within days of those arriving at my home, I had them covered and had ordered 1000 more. I have more then 300 done at this point, using fabrics from former quilts in pinks, mauve, burgundy, greens and tans. Just yesterday, I bought 3 fabrics which have gold in them to match that which I already had. I wrote to the lady who taught the class to my quilting group to ask her for the antidote for "hexagonal mania". She said, unfortunately, there is none, that the adiction will just increase in intensity AND she sent me the link for this blog. At least I know now, I am in good company. I will continue with my mania, waiting to see if a design will evenutally enter my brain.

great quilt. Love the pattern . i am doing the same pattern but with floral material.
ReplyDeleteI have caught your hexi bug and have a question for you. How do you start your hexi's so they stay put while you are basting them to the template. I am going on a road trip Tues. and would like to take a small project with me, I have been using a little glue stick to hold the fabric down, is this ok or is there a better way. I love doing hexis, they are so relaxing but would like a few hints if possible.
ReplyDeleteThanks

Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteVery Beautiful! Can you tell me what kind of thread you use. I have tried paper piecing some by hand but know that sometimes my threads show. Not much but enought that I notice (I am my worst critic on this, too). I even tried using the clear threads, the ones that are like fishing line, but I don't like those very well. I usually use like a cream or something that blends somewhat.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
