I about did the happy dance of joy in the aisle of first class on my flight to San Diego ---- but thought better of it. The last thing I want is for a US Marshall to detain me for inappropriate behavior and scissor wielding!
I finished the second background area surrounding the center medallion – WOW! I’ve been working on this since the first trip to Alaska in August! So when people say “OH, look ---you are almost done….” I laugh and beg to differ. There is a LOT of background area yet to fill. We are early into 2012 – will I finish it this year? Hmmmm….I’m not counting on it, but I’ll keep plugging along!
Here’s the quilt parts laid out in on the floor! The bottom left corner is ready to attach.
Here it is just laid into position. Anyone want to count the hexies in this section for me? I ran out of time! I just wanted to stitch them together, not know how many there actually were!
On Thursday, I had some time to sit and stitch and got it about half way sewn on before it was time to leave to drive up to Misson Viejo.
Here I am at half way….see that big gap still left to do? I finished it in the car on the way up to the Beach Cities Quilt Guild meeting! YEAH!!
So where are we now? We start the next section:
It’s a small start, but it will become something big. Just what AM I going to do when this hexie thing is done?

My hat is off to you! I am working on a few hexagons myself. Are yours one inch or one and 1/2 inch? I just got an accuquilt go for Christmas and am able to cut the fabric out more easily and in all different sizes, but I like the middle size the best. I hope to someday have something like the size of your quilt. I only sew mine in front of the television or other down times with no book. Please keep us up to date!

OMG that is gorgeous. I not only admire your pattern, but that you haven't snatched yourself bald yet. This would be one (if mine) that would only use on Sunday's and special days because of all the work. It's stunning and a cup of coffee to boot. Wow

I think it looks really interesting with only the two background sections. Unusual and unexpected.
"Count"? You had to say "Count"????!!!!
464, that includes the red outer border on both sides into the darkest hexies on the interior. The OCD always kicks in when someone says "Count".
It is beautiful, Bonnie. Now I think you ought to do a pool where all your followers say when you will finish this quilt. I am in for October 19, 2012. The prize could be all the papers you used to do YOUR hexies!! :>)

Cathedral windows?
Wow that's coming along nicely. You were just starting that section when we cruised in August. Next project should be a cathedral windows. I so want to make one to use up scraps. Kendra

Bonnie that is amazing! Just gorgeous, and what patience you must have! I have been working on a Grandmothers Flower Garden off and on for 10 years and the hexies are way bigger than these. I bow to the master... :)
Wow! Your hexie quilt is sooo amazing. I really don't know how you put them together so quickly. I made one diamond and it took me HOURS to sew it together!
Move on to diamonds when you're done with this? I'm sure the hand quilting is going to take a while though. Probably not as portable however.

Stunning! I love it so much that I am in the process of stitching one in blues and browns. When you finish this masterpiece, you can start one using diamonds and piece stars. That's my plan although it'll be a looong time before I get there.

Woman, I don´t envy you :) Last yaer I finished a hexagonquilt. There were 3 - 4 000 hexagons and I still have some left. Maybe I should get inspired by you......Your quilt is beautiful!

Geez... I have been working on a hexi-quilt for about a year now and I haven't even gotten half as far (compared to the number of finished and stitched together hexies...)
I wish I was as fast as you are (and I wish I had your skills when it comes to selecting fabrics for the scrappy look)

I have never seen a hexi quilt with this setting, and I LOVE IT! I have always wanted to make a hexi quilt, but was afraid it would look horrible since I had to hand piece it, (I am not very patient or all that keen or practiced at hand sewing)............but you know what? I think you've converted me!
I can't wait to see this finished, it looks like a tile floor somewhere in Morocco........gorgeous!

Bonnie - it is just so gorgeous - the range of fabrics make it shimmer and come alive - what a wonderful thing to achieve - one small piece, one small stitch at a time - inspirational.
Looks fantastic - scissors on an areoplane, you can not have them on Australian flights - a sewing needle can be hard to take on board, then you need a Clover cutter worn as a brooch. Look forward to seeing quilt completed.

That is SO FABULOUS looking. I would never be able to get myself to do that much hand piecing. What a beautiful design. I love how you even made the background look interesting. I just learned how to do this about three weeks ago. I first ordered 200 1" hexagons on line to start. Within days of those arriving at my home, I had them covered and had ordered 1000 more. I have more then 300 done at this point, using fabrics from former quilts in pinks, mauve, burgundy, greens and tans. Just yesterday, I bought 3 fabrics which have gold in them to match that which I already had. I wrote to the lady who taught the class to my quilting group to ask her for the antidote for "hexagonal mania". She said, unfortunately, there is none, that the adiction will just increase in intensity AND she sent me the link for this blog. At least I know now, I am in good company. I will continue with my mania, waiting to see if a design will evenutally enter my brain.

great quilt. Love the pattern . i am doing the same pattern but with floral material.
I have caught your hexi bug and have a question for you. How do you start your hexi's so they stay put while you are basting them to the template. I am going on a road trip Tues. and would like to take a small project with me, I have been using a little glue stick to hold the fabric down, is this ok or is there a better way. I love doing hexis, they are so relaxing but would like a few hints if possible.

Very Beautiful! Can you tell me what kind of thread you use. I have tried paper piecing some by hand but know that sometimes my threads show. Not much but enought that I notice (I am my worst critic on this, too). I even tried using the clear threads, the ones that are like fishing line, but I don't like those very well. I usually use like a cream or something that blends somewhat.
