Quiltville Inn sits at the crossroads of highway 16 coming up from North Carolina and highway 58,. Route 58 runs for approximately 508 miles stretching horizontally across the entire southern border of the state. It begins near the Cumberland Gap at the western tip and ends at Route 60 in Virginia Beach on the Atlantic coast.
It might look like a lazy 2-lane highway in front of the inn, but this route is a favorite of motorcyclists and other travelers alike in the summer months.
I was working in the studio when I heard the rumble of many motorcycles pulling up into the drive.
This is not unusual - oftentimes it's a regrouping, making decisions on where to go next, trying to find GPS signal, missed a turn at highway 16 to head toward North Carolina, or just taking a break for a leg stretch after riding for a long ways.
I went out and asked if everything was okay, if there was anyone needing help and I came face to face with Bette in her gear saying "I'm a quilter! I came for a photo!"
Well, bust my buttons, this was the most fun thing ever.
There was no room in her saddle bags to haul a quilt all the way from Ontario, Canada but she would have if she could have!
At this point I said - I've got one better, let's get the whole gang on the porch!
Yahooo!
I asked if they had ridden "Back of the Dragon" yet? And they had just finished that scenic ride and its more than 400 curves.
Riders travel here for the sweeping mountain curves, scenic overlooks, technical riding sections, and Appalachian atmosphere that have made this scenic drive in Virginia one of the best motorcycle roads in the country.
And the fact that they added QUILTVILLE INN as a stop on their itinerary just made my day.
This was just the most fun break in my day -
And then it was time for me to head home.
Am am up to here!
All spool blocks are done -
I've got units laid out -
Nine-patch cornerstones are made.
I need to add the inner border that will make the outer border fit. I haven't decided on a color yet, but really I'm learning toward black. At first it was going to be neutral, but that just disappears.
Sometimes disappearing is good if that is what you are looking for, but I think I want a pop here. It will emphasize and pull in the black outline of the sewing machine in the center.
So that's what I'll play with today.
It's Thursday. Thursday is also including another visit to the physical therapist for more dry needling. I think it's helping.
I'll also be spending time with the Pieceful Hearts gals -
By the time we hit mid July I feel the summer already slipping away and I want to make as much of it as I can. (I still feel triggered over last year's winter! I'm not ready to face that again!)
How about your day? Any plans or projects underway?
Quiltville Quote of the Day -
Can't wait to see what fun we get up to over the next week.
Let's get this Thursday, started -

Headed out to not one, but two quilt group meetings! Our local Quilts of Valor group meets on the second Thursday of the month. I mostly longarm for them and have three quilts to deliver. They also collect scraps for someone who makes dog beds for shelters. I have a whole trunk full of rejects (mostly stained, some warn) from the linen room at our church garage sale last month to drop off, too, in the morning. In the afternoon our church charity quilting group meets . I need to hurry up and get a top finished for them this morning before Quilts of Valor. Normally that group is first and third Thursdays (specifically to NOT be the same week as the QOV group!) but due to the Forth and an event next week at the church, we moved to the second and fourth for the month. Whew!

ReplyDeleteFun to have a Biker/Quilter stop by for a photo. Did she get a tour inside? I quilted two days with my friends this week. It's always good for my soul. Having a great wave in the SE.corner of Washington State. Glad the needling is helping. Have a great Weekend. It's Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Weekend. And I'm missing it again , sad face...
ReplyDeleteToday my daughter and family is headed back home to Richmond Virginia. They have been here in Iowa where she and her hubby grew up for 2 weeks. It's been a busy time, no sewing. I hate to see them leave especially the 4 grandkids. They love their life in Virginia. Francine from Dubuque Iowa.
ReplyDeleteI'm working on doll quilts for Toys for Tots. Ellen Thompson
ReplyDeleteoh, what fun!! When we were coming home from our vacation in North Carolina last year we rode the "The Dragon," a motorcycle trail with about 311 curves in 4 miles!! It has the state border line of Tennessee and North Carolina in the beginning. YIKES!! We took it because the bridge had collapsed again in Tennessee that was on our main way home. It was a fun adventure and I regret not filming going around the curves, but I think we were too scared too!! HAHA!! But, we have the shirt, and the picture of our rental car that was taken while on route. I'm so glad that they had the memories as well.
ReplyDeleteToday I am binding another finish, YAY!! Then it's probably cleaning house and getting back to work on my Christmas Pineapples. I for one am NOT counting the days. August will be here before we know it and then it's back to school. 😩
Happy to see the pups as well. They are looking spoiled, as always! Happy stitching!
I so Love your blogs I look for them and they Make My Day! Thank You!!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog I look for it Each day and it makes me feel good and smile!!!
ReplyDeleteHeading to a quilting weekend with a group from my quilt guild. We are heading to the piney woods of east Texas. I haven't been on a retreat with this group so I'm excited to see what everyone is up to. I too was just wondering how Flash is doing.
ReplyDeleteThis morning I dropped into Hobby Lobby to pick up a picture I had framed. Holy smokes the Christmas was already in store. I told the man helping me I was not ready yet!! He said it was Christmas in July. LOL Time just runs to fast. I loved seeing the motorcyclists. I bet that is a fun ride across the mountains. Great blog today. Brenda Jackson
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome ride for your visitors and I'm sure the quilter was overjoyed to actually get to meet you and with pictures too! My husband and I love our bike rides but we don't do it as often as we did in our younger years. Those long rides can be very hard on the body. Just an FYI - I received notification that my Scrap and Savvy Quilting book has shipped! I can't wait to see what I'm going to make first!
ReplyDeleteI machine bound 3 potholders this morning before reporting for cataract surgery. It's the second eye,so hope to be back at the sewing machine in a day or 2. In the 2 weeks between surgeries I finished and quilted a twin size quilt; pieced, quilted and bound a lap quilt and pieced the 4 potholders.
ReplyDeleteGosh, your sewing machine wall hanging is darling. Love it!!
