I think it's my most recent favorite! (They all take their turn in being favorite, don't they?)
I enjoyed the whole making process of this one and I know there will be another string quilt popping up in my must make list soon.
But for now...I'm setting the strings aside and focusing in so many other directions.
That lull of "I'll take a break now that this is done." Never seems to happen to me.
My favorite part of this quilt? The NO NO NO fabric and where it is popping up everywhere in the neutrals.
I laugh that I get a passive-agressive charge out of unlikely fabric pairings and werid, comical inclusions. Keep them coming. It makes quilting FUN!
Yes, as a teenager I was accused of being either sacreligious (Whatever that means to a 14 year old with a wicked sense of humor!) to cynical, to disrespectful, to totally lost.
Now in my 60s I'm continuing to embrace that "stick it to the quilt police" mentality and doing what I want with my fabric, no matter how old, outdated, ridiculous it is.
And all in all - I think my favorite mode working with foraged, found, gathred, gleand and gifted fabrics keeps me inspired to keep making more quilts.
And all in all - I think my favorite mode working with foraged, found, gathred, gleand and gifted fabrics keeps me inspired to keep making more quilts.
I've gone way past the "How many quilts to you think you really need??" phase and just accept that I'll be doing this as long as I can keep doing this.
I love a backing that holds interest and also shows the quilting texture.
All the way to the backing!
I love a backing that holds interest and also shows the quilting texture.
Don't you think that the quilting kind of unifies everything together?
And in this case...the silliness of some of the fabrics (The ice cream sundaes, pixie stix, candies and lollipops - The waternelon plaid, the ducks on the water which remind me of my Grandpa Mach...) placed next to the stoic standard tone-on-tones came together in a manic few days of "I can't stop the madness" sewing.
What does it say? I imagine someone picking this quilt up 50 years from now and just giving the fabric choices the side eye as in "Who was this quilter, and what was she on?"
And I hope it makes them smile.
Quilts don't have to be a home dec item. They don't have to match your couch, your bedroom decor or coordinate with your curtains.
All fabrics are worthy. All colors are valuable.
There is no such thing as an "IN" color or an "OUT color.
Quilting is more than just working with the 8 watercolor paints we were given as kids to encourange our creativity.
And the powers that be that said "Don't mix them up, wash your brush before dipping into another color...." Did they shackle us, stunt us, or encourage us to explore?
These are all things that have been running through my mind.
Who decides what is "IN" or "OUT" and what's in it for them?
Do we really care what the Pantone color of the year is? Why do we feel the need to rush out and follow a trend?
Why have I had too much caffiene already today?
Because this happened late at night at my brother Scott's house:
I've got one round around the center flower.
Today:
Son Jeff is on hand working on yard upkeep and since he and Hubster Dave will be taking care of my job of making sure the retreat is ready and everyone has what they need, he'll be working along side me to replace the freezer paper on pressing stations so they are fresh, even folding and filling towel baskets so they are ready (And he knows what to do while I'm away) and going through the checklist of things on the to- do list.
And we'll see how the day unfolds.
How about you?

Some stupidly drunk guy crossed through traffic, went airborne up over the sidewalk and front steps (The house is UP from the road!) and slammed his company truck into the side of Scott & Alicia's beautiful 100 year old house in Nampa, Idaho.
The flying truck must have been going at such a high speed - it took out the dining room window and wall.
The driver is in the hospital with unknown injuries - but I spent most of yesterday just sick that this happened....what a mess.
Can you imagine? 10:50pm and you are settling into bed and there is a huge crash that shakes the whole house...glass everywhere, debris...
Evidently the truck struck near the corner of the house and there are support beams involved so we don't know what is going to have to happen to get it all right again.
Yesterday was also the 8th anniversary of my brother Mark's passing. An emotional day.
Some days are just not for progress on anything quilty...it's okay to just make it through it and come out the other side the next morning.
Quiltville Quote Of The Day -
Just in case you find yourself in that circuitous round of second guessing...
Forget the focus on perfect...it's already perfectly wonderful.
Have a terrific Thursday, everyone!

Love your Stardust quilt. So pretty.
ReplyDeleteI imagine you will be working on the Mystery now... I've got to get busy with Bear Branch, want to finish it up by October.
I will be cancelling my subscription to Quiltmaker after next month.
I imagine that's going to happen a lot.
Have a Sparkling day
Blessings 🙏💞
Kudos to Son Jeff and Hubster Dave for filling in for you at the Inn while you're away!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about the accident at your brother Scott and Alicia's 100 year old house. I'm sure they're sick with frustration and devastation.
Love the Quote of the Day! Jenny
What a time you have had! Glad your brother and his wife were not hurt. I’m sure you have prepared everyone for your time away. Relax and have fun.
ReplyDeleteI love your comment about how many quilts do you really need and I’ll just keep quilting as long as I’m able that’s my sentiment. I’m 80 years old and working on Abundance right now I can only afford to use what I have or pick up on guild free table so I need patterns that use multi colours love your patterns Bonnie

I just turned 80. Glad to know you are still quilting.
DeleteWe are driving up to Nampa today to visit our son for a few days. I'm so sorry about your brother's home. I'm sure it can and will be fixed - it just might take some time. Glad that they are ok. I love your string quilts. Enjoy your trip. I'm sure all will be well both at home and with with your extended family.
ReplyDeleteI say "amen" to making quilts that are just fun to make and not a trending pattern or color scheme, just an idea in your head. AND the more scraps the better. Take care Bonnie.
ReplyDeleteI love your Stardust quilt. Over the years, I have yet to see one of your quilts that wasn't wonderful. Such a shame about the damage to your brother's house. Glad none of them were hurt.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your brother. Hopefully the house can be fixed back to how it was. It looks awesome. And no matter how many years a love one is gone we still miss them.
ReplyDeleteYou take care.

Hi Bonnie! Yes, keep doing this as long as you can keep doing this! Your quilts are all so beautiful and I love when you give us a close up of your fun fabric. It's like and eye spy for adults, full of memories and fun. Your use of color is so wonderful and is very much a part of your huge success as a quilter and inspiration to us all.
ReplyDeleteOn the note that has you so caffeinated this morning, I was so sorry to see a drunk driver's impact on your brother's house so horribly. I'm just glad no-one in your family was hurt. The driver caused their own injuries and gets zero compassion from me. I'm sorry your brother and his family now have to deal with reconstructing their home. I could see that their home had been maintained and updated beautifully, and that it now has to be repaired is heartbreaking.
I gave up on perfect a long time ago; now I quilt for fun! Ellen Thompson
ReplyDeleteRe color: I tossed the art store color wheel aside the day I realized that chocolate brown wasn't on it. It's coming, but it isn't there. So what use was that wheel to my brown fabric stash? Played around with color and fabric instead. I realized that all colors go with every other color - you just need enough "bridge" fabrics to bring two colors together (or not - let them clash if that's your vibe). I also made my own color wheel out of fabrics I had on hand, and the light bulb went off. I saw what tint, tone, and shade were all about. I spotted blue-based colors vs. yellow-based. Now I can analyze any color fabric on sight. As quilters, we all should take time to study color and understand it.
ReplyDeleteRe the truck crash: That's horrible. Glad nobody inside was injured. It shakes your whole world though. Same thing happened to my friend's house, but 2pm. Drunk driver in a 25mph zone went up over the lawn and took out the front bedroom wall and windows. Drunk at 2pm and behind the wheel! School was about to let out. The judge threw the book at the woman.
I felt totally satisfied reading your thoughts on colours of fabric (what is In or Out), how many quilts do we need, not focusing on perfect, etc. I am in my 60s and will not stop making quilts because I LOVE to quilt and create! You are an inspiration Bonnie ❤️

Many years ago, a drunk driver hit the corner of the house we were living in. It was our son's bedroom. Fortunately, he was at his mom's that night. The damage wasn't as extensive as your brother's home, but regardless, it is so scary!

Thanks, Bonnie, I love hearing what you have to say. Keep sayin it!! Astonishing about that truck plowing into house! What the !?!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry you lost your brother Mark. That was a huge loss. Today I'm working madly on finishing a quilt for my guild quilt show. Feeling the pressure! But pleased with the quilt. I'll post pics on the FB page. Love you!
Oh no, That driver was very careless. What a world we live in. I try to turn off the world while I create new Quilts. I'm with you, use it up as much as you can while you can. Keep on and thanks to Dave and Jeff keeping the Inn open while you travel. Safely come back with inspiration to make us More Quilty.
ReplyDeleteGlad they are ok. This will be such a pain to get it back to how it was. I just came back from the store and a car drove through the fence at the corner of our street. Looks like they missed the house. This is at a four way stop. How is my question. In my sewing room finishing fair entries out of, what most people would consider vintage fabric. Love it. Elaine 🇨🇦
ReplyDeleteoh dear Bonnie. I am so glad your brother and family are okay. And what a horrible rush of adrenaline and worry at 11 pm. I want you to know how much joy your blog brings to me…inspiration, creativity and a sense of calm during this crazy time in our world. In terms of fabric…if you are ever in Durham, you should check out the Scrap Exchange. It’s a re-use center and people donate gorgeous fabric…it’s where I get almost all my quilting fabric! So, no “what’s in fashion” for me, just lots of color. Sending care and compassion, Mindy
ReplyDeleteTrend? What's that? ;-) I'm about the least trendy person I know. Don't like what I say, wear, or do? Go away. I'm good with it 😆
ReplyDeleteThank you Bonnie for validating our personal color choices. I have been in classes where the teacher would say that my color choices wouldn't work & my respectful reply was "yes, they will." I love the fact that you include the quirky & what others call ugly in your quilts. When we do something unexpected in our work it is a glimpse of our personalities. Bravo, Bonnie!

WHat a tough day for you and your family! I hope they will be ok. Drunk driving is the most useless thing ever. My children lost their father to one. Lots of anger at first, but I think they'll be ok.
ReplyDeleteI just love Stardust, everything about it now that it's finished! The quilting pattern looks like a fun one to stitch out. I can't wait to see what comes up next!
We are just trying not to roast down here in SOuth Central Texas. Getting Friday night lights under way. Ready and waiting for Fall & cooler weather! Happy stitching!! :-)
loved your piece on quilts colors. (and permission to mix colors!) i do love color.. and lots of it! ...however, i would argue that color can be dated and does repeat itself. it doesn't make the color "wrong" in any way, only recognizable. proof in point, those mauve towels you just had to have in the late 1980's. the light blue volkswagon bug of the late 70's. and the cerulean scene in, 'the devil wears prada". yes, i do love color!!
ReplyDeleteI am waiting patiently for the Stardust pattern as I have so many blue scraps that are begging to be used. I am letting my Quiltmaker subscription run out as I have all my other magazines. I will pray for safe repairs for the home and all those involved.
ReplyDeleteYour post is so ‘on point’ for me right now with memorial anniversaries and things not going well. Thank you for your openness and honesty. God bless.
ReplyDeleteI need some hexie inspiration. I a new to epp. I am a scrappy quilter but not sure how to tackle scrappy hexies . Flowers or rows?
ReplyDelete.
