Hey, hey, Quiltvillians!
Guess what day it is?
It's mid-July which means there must be a new pattern release and gift-away!
I know you've been waiting for this one.
And while Abbeygate is not necessarily a "holiday" quilt - red and white quilts are so classic that it easily could be one.
In fact, I did throw in some holiday fabrics, even though it is not strictly a Christmas quilt.
Let's face it. July is a "hurry up and get started" month for quilters when they want to have something made in time for the holidays. So here we are!
If you've been with me over any length of time you know that I have been filing tile floor inspirations away for "someday" quilts. And "someday" has arrived - with a vengeance!
I wanted to make a quilt in reds and neutrals. And as I generally do, I start with the strips in my Scrap User's System - but guess what?
We had used most of my variety in our last year's Old Town quilt. So what's a girl to do?
I pulled several pieces from the cabinet stash, and quickly took about 12'' off of each, cut that into the strip widths I needed and replenished my red strip stash.
I may have over estimated what I needed! LOL!
I paired these newly cut reds (Some out of really old yardage and I'm so happy to see it used!) with my creamy neutrals for the half-square triangles in the quilt.
Of course, I used my Essential Triangle Tool to make the half-square units, but the pattern also includes traditional rotary cutting directions. You can use any method that you prefer, just keep in mind the unfinished and finished sizes.
I am so grateful for my Essential Triangle Tool as it works with the sizes of strips I already keep in my Scrap User's System.
Is this enough variety here to work with?? I think so!
My best hint for chain piecing is to trim your chains from behind your machine when they reach ironing board length. In this case I was counting and trimming into 10 unit lengths and then laying them out flat so they wouldn't get tangled.
If you chain 600 things in one long length you are going to get a tangled ball and threads can pull when you try to untangle them. Trim them into the length you like to work with as you are chain piecing.
And then CHAIN PRESS! Don't cut them all apart into individual units until you have pressed your seams.
Chain pressing is a game-changer and will have you working up that chain unit by unit. All of the darks are already on one side, you can flip from one to the next to the next quickly because you don't have to pick up and handle each one individually and rotate and press.
When my chain is pressed and laying out on the ironing board, I usually come through with scissors to cut the threads. Then I trim dog ears.
If you like that rotary blade chain cutter thing, do yourself a favor and press BEFORE you cut into individual units. You'll save so much time!
I cross-hatched Abbeygate with hand quilting stitches.
My hoop is 14'' resin. (I've broken too many wood ones, this one has lasted!) My quilting thread is YLI in Ecru. My needles are Roxanne betweens size 9.
And Ivy was never happy when it was time for me to move the hoop!
There are so many fun fun fabrics in Abbeygate!
I chose a red reproduction print from the deep cabinet stash as binding.
My piecing goes to the edge of the quilt so I cut my binding strips 2'' for a double-fold binding that finishes at 1/4'' so I don't chop off the patchwork points at the edge.
And yes, there is Y2K fabric in here. Can you spot it?
I've recently finished #4 Lahinch, another tile floor inspiration that will release this fall.
And I just may have drawn up one or two more. I'm addicted to making quilts with simple units all from my scraps.
Tile Inspired!
Simple shapes create a stunning repeat of pattern and secondary designs – All from a photo taken of a vintage tile floor white traveling. Full color photos, Optional piecing methods, and directions to press for success!
Quilt Size: 80’’ X 80’’
And about that gift-away!

I'll be drawing for 2 winners who will each receive an Abbeygate PDF pattern from me and a Crème de la Crème fabric roll from Cotton to Quilts.
And yes, they have wonderful rolls in other colors, too! Each roll contains 20 different fabrics 8'' X 22''. Perfect for stash enhancing!
Ready to enter?
We'll draw for our winners on 7/228/25.
Good luck, everyone!
