I knew they were on their last legs. But life has been TOO busy.
To busy for finding a new optometrist who specializes in folks with lower vision, who can't read letters shined onto a wall in a lit up rectangle.
People with macular things going on.
And truth be told, I just didn't want to deal with it because it is hard. And I hate hard things. I really do.
And then this happened last night.
The nose pad just broke off. On its on. While I was wearing them. It just gave way.
Oh, crap. The metal is broken, it's not like its simply missing a screw or anything.
Yes, I have my previous pair.
But the prescription is not right anymore.
Oh, they are okay for distance or for midrange things. Though they are progressive, the reading area is just NOT good.
For those who have asked - Yes, there is still hurricane Helene clean up happening here.
For the past few weeks these big trucks and cranes have been cleaning up the downed trees from our roadsides.
There are a couple of areas up from the inn where they have dug burn pits on cleared land - fires are burning 24/7. So many trees and root balls of trees.
Eventually it will stop looking like such a war zone - and I know they are working hard to get things cleared before the winter snows come.
That little Liberty bag!
I remembered to take a photo before leaving my office yesterday afternoon. Isn't this just cute as can be?
Simple. Cute. And so perfect for traveling.
When I tallied up the cost of the mini charm pack it would take to make this, plus the lining fabric, the zipper, the TIME - 12 pounds was just about right to just buy it and have it done.
And the thread snips are precious, and something I can use.
This also arrived yesterday!
Excitement is mounting!
My travel documents and more arrived for my upcoming Australian adventure with Craftours!
And look - they even included mosquito netting for the black flies when we go a-wandering! We are ready for whatever Australia has to offer!

Double (almost) Rainbow as I was leaving my office -
I came around the corner of the QPO studio to drop some outgoing mail in the mail box and look! You can barely see the second one...
It was so weirdly warm yesterday - about 62 degrees and a thunderstorm rolled through. Yes, THUNDER. Weird, I tell you.
This morning temps are back in the 30s...more like it should be for December.
My go-to after Thanksgiving is pot pie (though I usually make soup, too). I look forward to it more than the actual meal, I think! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree turkey carcasses are the best part.
ReplyDeleteLove your new little bag and scissors. REMEMBER to leave those snips at home when you travel!! I speak from experience 😕
ReplyDeleteBest part of Thanksgiving is leftovers for sure. They just don't last long enough to get to Christmas without cooking. I throw my fabric packages down the stairs as I come in the house or leave them in my trunk and hope to sneak them in, lol. Yep we get you!
ReplyDeleteThe Optometrist should be able to put a new nose pad on your glasses so you can deal with a new exam and glasses when you get back. They can solder on a new pad. Good luck with your mammogram.
ReplyDeleteTurkey soup sounds delicious this time of year. I make turkey gumbo the day after Thanksgiving as requested by my son every year.
ReplyDeleteRe: reading glasses …. You can get clip-on magnifiers - mail-order or drugstore - which will upgrade your old glasses for now …

Bonnie, go to a jeweler to see if they can solder your nose piece back on to get you by. Just a thought!
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I hear you about the glasses! It was just the "last thing" you needed. I, too, have complicated vision. Good luck with the new eye doctor. If you get a chance, get a copy of your script and see if you can order an extra pair with cheap frames. I once lived in rural Alaska and had to fly out of the village to get glasses when mine broke. That was when I got a second pair! I love your quilts and am doing my first Mystery after watching since 2016.
ReplyDeleteBonnie if you haven’t seen it a jewelry store that makes or repairs jewelry they might be able to repair your glasses. My frame broke and they were able to solder it
ReplyDeleteI came here to say this. My jeweler was able to solder my pair when they broke.
DeleteMine broke just like yours but the solder that they would use to fix them didn't work together so they recommended this small shop where the woman dealt with different kinds of metal. It took a bit but she fixed them and I've never had another problem with them. She charged me a nominal fee and I was on my way. Love little side street shops!!
DeleteBonnie, my daughter is an optometrist with a masters in low vision. She could absolutely take care of you, but unfortunately, she lives in Lincoln, NE and so not in your area. I'm so sorry this happened to you right now. Wendy
ReplyDeleteBonnie, you have to put yourself first and get this mamo done and your glasses taken care of! I know it's a hassle...but there are some things that just need to be dealt with. Hopefully, the eye doctor can repair your glasses before your trip and have new ones ready for you by the time you get back. I'll keep you in my prayers.
ReplyDeletep.s. I sneak my fabric in the house and put it on the stairs to my sewing room and hope Bill doesn't see it. It usually works.
The same thing happened to a pair of my glasses in the past. I did find an optical place (not even where I'd gotten my glasses) that happily soldered the nose piece back on so I could get by until I could get a new prescription and pair of glasses. Hope you have the same kind of luck !
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain about trying to find another eye doctor. Just after I had cataract surgeries my eye doctors huge practice just up and closed. We have had very good luck with buying eyeglasses on-line if you have a current . And they are so reasonably priced that for the first time in my life I have TWO pairs. Dealing with all this I’m sure is very frustrating especially at this time of year and with your upcoming travels. Hope you can find a resolution quick. Fran in Pa.
ReplyDeleteP.S. have you been swamped with aqua strings?
Your hubster or yourself ) are pretty darn handy do -it yourselfers, how about a try at soldering it back together. Soldering kit from hardware store worked for our glasses while on holidays. Sure worth a try Best wishes and merry Christmas to you and your lovely family.
ReplyDeleteAwe... poor Bonnie! I feel you on the thing of "just happening out of nowhere!" It's crazy. At least it happened while you were at home. One more day before CHristmas break. I am looking forward to the next clue, and some time to get caught up with all of it. Happy quilting!
ReplyDeleteI managed to stick a bit of bluetac (white actually) on as a temporary pad so that I could use my glasses until they could be properly sorted - I now understand why I used to see oldies with tape and such like on theirs.....my turn will come. Actually it already has!! Elaine
ReplyDeleteEver since finishing my Indigo Way top, my new mantra for whenever I catch myself complaining that something is too hard or too confusing is: "Says the lady that just sewed 2500 pieces of fabric together!"
ReplyDeleteWhen I would boil up the turkey carcass and after removing bones and any skin, I would remove all the meat into zip lock baggies, then pour the liquid into wide mouth canning jars, and the fat makes the seal at the top, just like when making jam we would pour melted wax on top. Then when cool into the fridge it goes till needed. Safe and fresh, just remove the fat!
