Gonna Need More Hexies!

Good morning, all -

It's Friday morning and 8:30am Phoenix time and all is still quiet here.

How is it that a body can still feel so tired after doing little more than watching TV all day?

This is just not my usual, and it throws me for a loop.

My ADHD is in hyper-drive and I'm doing all I can to just relax into the moment and go with the flow as the saying goes.

Dad is recovering from a bad cold that has laid him flat for a week.  I'm cutting him a great big break and he deserves it - he'll be 84 in February.  It takes longer to recover and aging is progressing as it will for all of us who are lucky enough to live long enough to experience it.

But for THIS go go go - gotta get it done - girl - it's HARD.

I did take a bit of a break yesterday and headed out for groceries and needed things while Dad was napping.

But other than that:

It's been this!

My butt has been on the couch for hours - just watching (More like listening) to whatever he wanted to put on.  News in the morning, several episodes of Amazing Race, a couple of movies, and winding up with CSI before I said it was bedtime for me.

It's good.  It's all good. I am here just to be with him.  I'm so grateful I'm here.

But I'm going to need more hexies! LOL!

I came with nearly 30 kits.

I've sewn my way through 7 of them.

I may have to take up crocheting dishcloths.

All kidding aside, I think that anyone who has had to slow down to just BE with aging parents or other loved ones gets this.

Maybe this is why there are numerous finished (or unfinished) yo-yo quilts out there.

Or embroidered pillow cases, tea towels, dresser scarves.

I used to wonder how some could do such intricate and fiddley things - and I'm beginning to get it.

Sometimes you just have to sit for hours and keep your hands busy.

It's not about accomplishing much - it's about having something that will take so long that you don't run out of something to do.

I'm gonna need more hexies.

I'm so glad I did this before coming:

I ordered a floor task light from Amazon and had it delivered before I came.

Dad has 3 "traditional" table lamps in his living room, none which give off enough light or are situated near the end of the couch which is my "spot."

I got it out of the box yesterday and quickly put it together and I am so impressed that I may order one for at home too.

It has a remote - and the batteries were included!

This is the Wio-Mio Floor Lamp and I've added it to the Quilting All the Time category of the Quiltville Amazon Affiliate Store. #ad

Look closely when you purchase, because it is listed for $39.99 but there is also a coupon to check for an additional 30% off and if you choose to buy 2 there is another check box to save an additional 5%.

  • Remote control; You can stepless adjust the brightness and color temperature through the remote control within a range of 49.2 feet, the lighting mode can be customized according to different needs of the environment. In order to facilitate selection, there are 6 scenes on the remote control that can be adjusted by one click to the corresponding mode
  • Touch control; You can stepless adjust the brightness from 5% to 100%, and there are 4 color temperatures that can be adjusted 3000k, 4000k, 5000k, 6000k
  • Lamp resource; Using 112 LED lamp beads can emit 1200 lumens and only consume 12 Watt of power; It has soft natural light without flicker
  • Flexible gooseneck; 360-degree adjustable gooseneck can direct the light to the position you need.

I love my slim line light that I currently use at home - but let's face it - it cost well over $100.00.

It's not dimmable - and there is no way to go from bright to warm.  It's either all on, or all off.

Because the Wio-Mio has a cover over the light bulbs, it is less glarey (Yes that is a word) than my slimline.

I love that I can adjust the light from warm to bright, and slide the control to dim or brighten.

And the price was right. So that's a definite win.

But the biggest win of all -

I'm here spending time with my dad.  I hear him stirring in his bedroom so breakfast will be underway shortly.

Will we leave the house today? I hope so - but it all depends on whether he feels up to it or not.

I plan to at least get out and take a walk through Sun Lakes today and get some fresh air.

And I'm gonna need more hexies.

  3. I’ll bet some quilters in your dad’s neighborhood would be happy to contribute some scraps to your hexie project!

  4. Lamp looks like a keeper. I need hand work as well. I have a quilt by the block as you go type quilt that I am finishing for my mother who died last week. I take a block with me to church, meetings, wherever I might be sitting and need my hands busy. Studies show that you comprehend better and retain information better if your hands are busy. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. They haven't kicked me out of church yet. In fact people expect it of me.

Much colder today in Tucson than usual, but sunny and bright, so prolly like that in Phoenix too. Should be a marvelous day for a walk. My, but you look a lot like your Dad! So glad you are enjoying the gift of being with him.

Hi Bonnie have a great time with your dad. Thank you so much for info on the lamp. I needed a new lamp by my chair hand work, knitting and reading. So I just ordered one and got a notice that it should be here later today. Thank you and Amazon.

Enjoy your dad Bonnie. I know what you mean about sitting with parents. I have been sitting in the hospital with my mom for the past week. She is suffering from extreme hypothermia when she fell outside.I am getting several UFOs finished.

Enjoy the time with your dad. I took up EPP so that I could do it while sitting with my parents when they were elderly. I still EPP but both my parents are gone and I miss them so much. What I wouldn’t give to have those days back.

  17. I know that you know this time with your dad is so special. I took up crochet to keep my hands busy when I need to sit - so I laughed at your crochet a dishcloth comment. that is exactly what I do and I give them away at Christmas.
    Enjoy this week!

  18. I have that same lamp, though it had a different name -- & love it so much I got another to keep at our lake house. That might be the best lamp I've ever bought! & yes, getting through time with unwell elders has brought me sewing time as well - wishing your dad health.

I just went to Amazon Canada to look at the light. Out of stock. You need to have shares in the light and ruler companies. LOL. Enjoy your time with your Dad. Time is moving too fast.

My mom is 92, and I have a little sewing area set up in her basement. I leave my project over there---it calls for 576 economy blocks that finish at 2 1/2". I listen to hours of true crime podcasts while I'm there, too. Brenda

  22. Completely understand about keeping hands busy and UFOs. I have a knitted lace shawl UFO from sitting at the hospital with my Mom. So happy that you and your Dad get some time together. Best to you both.

  23. I've been thinking about you and your hexies ever since you left for AZ, hoping you brought enough to get you through the whole trip, travel time, and sitting back and relaxing time, knowing that how you manage to complete so much so fast! Well, if you're like me and get a driving need to work on that particular project, where nothing else will do, perhaps the hubster, or friend Martha can be directed to your stash of hexies, or pulled fabric at home and send supplies to you to keep you going. I am so going to buy that lamp. Recently I purchased a similar lamp through Amazon, but it does not have a remote control. I can waive my hand near the sensor so it will turn on and off, but after waiving it around up there with nothing happening, I have to look up to see where the sensor is, and then I'm blinded when the light goes on, not happy about that. I'm certainly going to change my review of that lamp....and buy the same as yours! Thanks so much for passing along such great info on products we, as quilters, can really use!

  25. OH Bonnie!!! do see if Dad feels up to a little bit of "out" fresh air and someone else driving! I had been "out" at Dr. appts. my "kids" encouraged me to to out to lunch... it was such a treat, and so different from what i thought was "out"... I'm 82 and have been more or less "housebound" since my surgery mid-July.... and yes it takes so much longer when you get "older" to heal!!! also, love the bright colors of your hexies, and have knitted up a bunch of dish cloths!!! just to keep my hands busy!!! while convalescing... I am so glad, so very very happy that you are with your dad and bringing him such joy and companionship... God Bless and happy thanksgiving ... Cats om Car;sbad CA

Glad you are getting to visit with your dad I just got back from visiting my 88 yr
old dad who is in Fla. I wanting to know if the Silk Path pattern is available in paper pattern or just PDF. I really want to do but I don't know much about the computer to download. I would appreciate your help. Thanks so much

  27. So glad you are spending this precious time with your dad! I had to chuckle about the slower pace of seniors! For many years I would fly to TX to visit my mom & step dad. I learned to take at least one book to read, knitting, & even took my travel sewing machine one year to make new valances for their winter home there. I also worked on a QOV quilt for my son who was retiring after 23 yrs in the Army National Guard. Last deployment was Germany! Lots of long walks & taking Mom to shop for things she needed. Both mom & S dad are gone now, but have precious memories. I certainly understand always being busy & trying to adapt to a slower pace! Enjoy & safe travels home!!

Bonnie, I ordered the lamp you suggested and I LOVE it. I got it yesterday to help with my cross stitching and it works great. Could see those little holes even at midnight with help of light. Thanks for the recommendation from a pair of bad sighted eyes. I may have a second one in the near future for sewing room.
