It's MAY!
Memorial Day is right around the corner followed by Flag Day, Independence Day, and all the way through to Labor Day -
Summer has always been a season of Red, White & Blue for me - and i love sewing in these colors.
It brings back memories of neighborhood block parties during my childhood - where we would eat too many hotdogs, consume too much watermelon (dripping down our chins and onto our shirts) and the endless magic of sparklers when it got dark.
I can still smell them burning - such happy childhood memories from the "Wonder Years" of my life!
If you've followed me for a while you will remember that when I was traveling nearly weekly, I'd kit up a bunch of block parts in baggies, and borrow a featherweight for stitching in my hotel room at night.
You and I both know what happens when we sew from memory (or lack of it! LOL!) We sometimes get things the Wrong Way Round.
Shown here are a bunch of "Wrong Way" blocks that look completely right - there is nothing wrong with them other than I needed the black rectangles to be at the outside of the block as shown in the upper right inset image.
What's a girl to do when she makes more than 50 of these blocks WRONG?!
Make two smaller quilts from them - and then cut more kits and get back to sewing them the Right Way Round!
Isn't it crazy how a block can change so tremendously just by changing the value placement?
It turns out that I had need of a baby quilt - my brother David and his wife Anna were expecting boy #3.
All I needed was a simple alternate block to turn these wrong way blocks right!
It turned this oopsie into something really fun!
It was a win/win all the way around
(Even if the original Right Way Round remained in baggies until I could get back to it.)
This quilt was there to welcome my nephew Henry into the world.
And since I liked it so much and still had wrong way blocks left over - I made it again - this time for ME!
It's going to be displayed at Quiltville Inn through the summer.
But what about the Right Way blocks? What was I going for all along?
I combined two different blocks that create the effect of ovals - SO fun!
This is why the black rectangles needed to be in the RIGHT position or the effect just didn't happen.
More hotel sewing - such simple and fun blocks!
Do you see ovals?
Both of these quilts will be on display at Quiltville Inn - I can hardly wait to hang Right Way Round in the front foyer -
The pattern contains BOTH variations, and you can make either of them in either size -
Pattern details:
What do you get when you accidently make more than 1/2 of the main block wrong? A second quilt! Both versions are presented in sparkling patriotic colors of red/white/blue accented with black. Full color photos, graphics and extensive instruction included!

You'll find the pattern for Right Way Round in both the Quiltville Store and the Quiltville Etsy Pattern Shop.
And YES! Let's have a gift-away!
I'll be drawing for two winners who will each receive the PDF pattern containing both Right Way and Wrong Way Round from me - and even more:
One winner will receive a Facets of Black Color Roll, and the other will receive a Facets of Red Color Roll from Cotton to Quilts!
(And you know to check their website for their neutral rolls and other bundles to enhance your scrap stash, right?)
I can't wait to see what you make - and you know you are not limited to red/white/blue/black. Choose any 3 colors plus a neutral and it all comes out RIGHT not WRONG!
What three colors plus background would you choose? I may have to play with some color options to see what else would be perfection.
Good Luck, everyone!
I'm off to go spend the day with the May Quiltvillians who are quilting up a storm this weekend!
