Playing with Jacks in Rogue River!

Small town love in Oregon!

I saw this mural on our way to class the first day, but it was raining.  So yesterday morning I was set up early, and walked around the block to get a photo.

It wasn’t raining!  The sky was clearing!  And there were no cars in front of the mural which in reality is a gas station parking lot.

After this photo, I walked around the corner to get a photo of the shenanigans that were going on at the town fountain in the square.

Someone had put soap in the fountain and it looked like it was snow….well, sort of….

More like, it reminded me of the episode where too much soap was put in the washing machine on the Brady Bunch.  LOL!

Oh the weather outside is frightful…

But the foam is so delightful! LOL!

It was just so funny – folks were coming to the fountain to have their photos taken with the bubbly snow-like stuff.

All of this silliness set the tone for our Playing With Jacks workshop day with the Mountain Stars Quilters and friends.

So much busy productivity!

My only wish was that we had some Christmas music playing as we stitched our day away.

Laying out block parts and mastering webbing!

Getting into the Christmas Spirit with vintage prints!

These little easy blocks are the perfect opportunity to put things like block webbing, and using a second block as a leader/ender for the first so that blocks are finished in rapid fashion with something always being left under the foot at all times to keep piecing continuous.  And wow, that was a very continuous sentence!  What I love about this technique is that one block finishes as another becomes the leader/ender for the third one just starting….bam, bam, bam!

Little beauties!

Look at the difference the fabric color and value creates!

So many layout opportunities!

You’ll find the free pattern for Playing with Jacks under free pattern tab at the top of the blog.  And if you look closely, you’ll see that Sugar Bowl and Playing with Jacks are also closely related to Box Kite.  I love playing with these little asymmetrical gems.

Thanks for the wonderful day, Rogue River, Oregon!

I hope we can do this again another time!

Today is a “Get There” day.  I’m being picked up around 10am for a drive over to Brookings where I am giving my presentation at the Azalea Quilters Guild meeting tonight.

It’s supposed to be a clear day, and I’m looking forward to some photo ops along the Oregon coast.

  2. Thank you Bonnie for a great class Playing with Jacks. It was fun, productive and we learn some great tips. You are so much fun and inspiring. Glad the weather cooperated for your trip here to Oregon. It looks like you had good weather on the coast also. Enjoy the rest of your Oregon adventure.

  3. Bonnie, what a fun read this was for me; I grew up in Crescent City, California, just over the state line from Brookings, about 30 miles. I remember we chuckled when the two car dealerships in Brookings were called "Aiken" and "Paine"--what are the odds of THAT?? :-) Be sure and pick up some Myrtlewood while you're there!

  4. Have you ever put Playing with Jacks on point? It would make a very cool Arizona/Southwest looking pattern.
