Hey, everyone!
Welcome to my day on the Road Rally for Quiltmaker Magazine’s 100 blocks by 100 designers – VOLUME 15!!!
I am super excited as this makes my 14th consecutive issue.
Every issue has been a challenge.
And just as soon as we get done submitting for one issue, within a couple of months it’s time to turn on the thinking cap for what might be a good block idea for the next one.
And the competition gets steeper.
Now all blocks are submitted and reviewed before being accepted, and my goodness, what talented designers are out there designing their hearts out – FOR YOU!
Quiltmaker Magazine has also stepped up this whole blog tour process including MORE designers, more chances to win, more prizes and more fun!
If this is your first time visiting me, welcome! My name is Bonnie Hunter, and I write the Addicted to Scraps column for Quiltmaker.
In every issue you’ll find a block pattern destined to help you fall in love with your scraps all over again. Many of these blocks come from my own Scrap User’s System, playing with sizes of strips, squares and rectangles that work easily together, mixing and matching fabric lines, print types, genres, designers and manufacturers and playing by color family.
I publish my books under the Kansas City Star imprint of C&T Publishing.
I blog here daily, and when I am home not traveling and teaching, you’ll find me doing a live Quilt-Cam via Facebook Live that is later posted here on the blog and archived under the Quilt-Cam tab for easy reference.
I have a passion for vintage sewing machines and use and share them often.
You’ll find all kinds of things here from tips & tricks, loads of free patterns, yearly mysteries and challenges – and more! Be sure to check out my Calendar of Events tab to see if I’m teaching or lecturing near where you are.
You’ll find me very active on Facebook and Instagram sharing my quilty and not-so-quilty life. I’d love to have you along for the journey.
There is always something scrappy going down in Quiltville!
My block, Sawtooth Flutter!
I love red and neutral quilts, and this exploding star variation captivated me! It all started with inspiration from an antique quilt found on my teaching travels, and I quickly ditched the Y seams in the original and designed this using flying geese and half chevrons, or in other words the infamous “diamond in a rectangle” often found in our Quiltville mysteries.
I was also able to get ALL of these pieces out of my Scrap User’s System drawers of pre-cut strips, squares and rectangles. TRIPLE BONUS!
How about 3 blocks in a simple table runner layout? Love it!
Now about that name…..SAWTOOTH FLUTTER?!? Who’s big idea is THAT!? I’m still laughing.
Because it goes like this – You submit a block, and give it some “normal” name like “Exploding Star” or “Starburst” (Makes sense, right?!) But if there has already BEEN a block called Exploding Star or Starburst in a previous issue, they have no choice but to rename it something else.
And when the advance copies show up on your doorstep, and you see your beloved block on the cover – you give a whoop, quickly turn to your page in great anticipation and come face to face with your block which now has a name of “SAWTOOTH FLUTTER.” LOL!
Which brings to mind the following:
OH NO!!! LOL!!
I love my Quiltmaker family. What a hoot!
So here is where I need YOUR help. I’m looking for a new name for this block as I intend to make a full quilt with it in the future – no teeth and no flutters included! Please leave me a comment on what you think a good name would be for this fun block.
*NOTE* Your comment with a new name doesn’t enter you in my drawing, but helps me out! You will also need to follow directions below to enter the give-away part because that doesn’t take place in the comments section!
And NOW for the Give-Away Nitty Gritty!
Whoowhooo!!
There are TWO Give-Aways happening here! One lucky winner is going to receive a copy of 100 blocks Vol 15 directly from Quiltmaker Magazine. And one EXTRA lucky winner is going to receive not only Vol 15, but 9, 10 and 11 as well from ME!
And to sweeten the deal I’m throwing in a 100 blocks Vol 15 kitchen apron featuring all 100 blocks from this issue, a deck of my Bonnie Hunter playing cards (I’m the Joker!) , and my Quiltville 2.5” X 6.5” ruler by Creative Grids. (It says “If it’s still ugly – CUT IT SMALLER!)
Good luck everyone!
Our drawing will be happening Sunday Evening so get your entries in by 9pm Eastern on Sunday, May 7th! One entry per person. Duplicate entries will be disqualified.
And be sure you check out the other designers listed on the Quiltmaker Blog Quilty Pleasures. There is more fun to be had at all of the other sites participating in this Road Rally Blog Tour!
Speaking of Road Rally, That’s exactly what I’m doing today. I’m headed out the door on a road trip first up to Manassas, Virginia for a few days of workshop fun, and then I’ll be making a bee-line for Hagerstown, Maryland and then on to Linthicum and Glen Burnie, Maryland for several more days of workshops. 4 guilds, 4 lectures and 5 workshops. Whew!
The van is packed. I’m ready to go.
My favorite thing to do on road trips? Eat breakfast for dinner! I swear, if I could own a restaurant, it would be BREAKFAST - all day, every day.
Yummy!
Quiltville Quote of the Day!
Create a life that you love – and live every minute of it!
Happy Friday, everyone!
Kings Crossing, four crowns in the corners and the big red X or cross in the Centre. My suggestion for this block also called Sawtooth Flutterby.
ReplyDeleteSawtooth Rippled, or Echoing Star. It looks like if you drop a star in a pond, it would ripple out in a star shape. Great block! Have a blast on your trip.
ReplyDeleteShooting Stars! Love star locks/Quilts!
ReplyDeleteRhapsody in red. Don't know why...just sounded good.
ReplyDeleteScrappy Spinner. The block gives the impression of "spinning."
ReplyDeleteWhat about Ruffled Star? Every road trip you take brings more adventures. Breakfast for Dinner n Sundays was alwasy fun at my house. Safe travels and good luck re-homing those Vintage machines. Lucky Ladies!
ReplyDeleteThose colors around the star remind me of a whirlpool. How about the name "Starlight Ripple"?
ReplyDeleteRockets Red Glare

ReplyDeleteHi Bonnie from Norh Wilkesboro NC, How abot "More or Less" or Plus or Minuses" or even "Addition or Subtraction" since we are addicted to scrap quilting.
ReplyDeleteWhy I don't know but blooming star seems nice but night blooming star kept popping up in my head
ReplyDeleteStar cluster
ReplyDeletePlain & simple---"Bonnie's Star"----hugs, D
ReplyDeleteI think "Travelling Star", because of all the movement in the block and your busy life!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a beautiful "blowfish"... I love the red!!!
ReplyDeleteHow about "AFlutter Of The Stars"? LOL
ReplyDeleteI really like your block!
ReplyDeleteRadiating star, blossoming star, star crossing.
ReplyDeletePinwheel Blossom
ReplyDeleteStars- A- Glow or Startastic.
ReplyDeleteExploding Star
ReplyDeleteRadiating Stars -- it seems to grow from the middle star out.
ReplyDeleteI thought I couldn't love another block as much as Straits of Macinac...but I AM BOWLED OVER IN LOVE. Will be making this beauty. My first impression is that this looks like a tile in an amazing french mansion "Maison" and it's a star 'Etoile" - Maison Etoile. But I'm especially attracted to the way that the the center star echoes and slides out the the corners.
ReplyDeleteIts almost as though the star is on top and the surrounding echoes slide down to the corners. This echo effect reminds me how we have a Circle of Influence. We are the star in the middle, and who we are echoes out and blesses (I hope blesses) our circle. Our quilting is the same - reaching out and influencing many in different and beautiful ways. Echoed Gleam or Dazzling Echo
Twinkle twinkle Little Star or simply Twinkling Star
ReplyDeleteStar rose!
ReplyDeleteStars Abound is all I could come up with. Full quilt will have lots of them. LOL
ReplyDeleteBeautiful block! "Christmas Cactus" is my first impression.
ReplyDeleteStar Burst is what I thought when I saw it. I know it is a type of candy and do not know if you can use the same name but it sure fits. I love the square. You designers amaze me.
ReplyDeleteStar Burst is probably too obvious but how about Burst Star?
ReplyDeleteI like the names given som far. So just throwing in another name. How about star galaxy.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful, intricate block!
ReplyDeleteThere are so many good options already suggested, but I tried to think of one I hadn't already seen. How about "Stars-a-Burstin'"? ;o)
Bonnie's Star or Blooming Star :)
ReplyDeleteOr you could name in after a patrotic city. Philadelphia Star
Virginia Reel
ReplyDeleteThis block just seems to ripple. So Rippling Stars is a name. Or Repeating Stars, You have so many wonderful names suggested, now will you ever decide? With any name, it is a beautiful block and I can't wait to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteStar Delight or Delightful Star
ReplyDeleteCelestial Reflection
ReplyDeleteI would call it Star Field, I may have baseball on my mind :)
ReplyDeleteThis block made think of the beautiful quilt in one of your books with Turkey in the name.so turkey paws came to mind :-)

ReplyDeleteSo, you just love Breakfast. How about Sawtooth Scramble? or maybe Exploding Sawtooth? Congrats on 14 consecutive issues. Way to go! I knew you could do this. Red is just beautiful and you have another fantastic block to share with us. Thank you for that and also for taking the time to be a part of QM's 100 Blocks Blog Tour and giving us this opportunity to become a winner. There is nothing more special then having a package waiting for you to pick up and knowing that you are a QM winner. Who knows? Could be that fantastic magazine or all of your generous goodies. Thank you, Bonnie.
ReplyDeleteSandi Timmons
sandit1@sbcglobal.net
Glowing Star for the way its just shimmers away from the center!

ReplyDeleteCrowned star. Crown of stars. Thorned Star. Crystal star
ReplyDeleteRecently learned just how much control you give to the magazine when you give them your designs.
ReplyDeleteAs for a new name...Chevron Star or Chevron ribbon star.
Congratulations on the publication of your new block. It's looks very challenging. In a while I am headed out to purchase volume 15. Thought of a name for the new block that fits your active lifestyle & celebrates your visits to Texas. "El Camino Royal" which translates to The Royal Road. There are still a few miles of the original road to be found in East Texas. The history of the road goes back to the Texas fight for independence. Bonnie, you are always on the road. Surely you need a special block to highlight your quilty road.

ReplyDeleteMarching Through Georgia came to mind first. Then, I thought Pas A Deaux because of the wonderful flow of the blocks together. In ballet, a pas de deux [pɑ d(ə) dø] (French, literally "step of two") is a dance duet in which two dancers, typically a male and a female, perform ballet steps together.

ReplyDeleteHi, Bonnie,
ReplyDeleteSure are a lot of suggestions and it was difficult for me to come up with something. My suggestions are "Falling Stars" & "Superstars". Thank you for asking for our opinions...everyone has at least one!
Enjoy your road trip!
How about Star Dance, block has movement and looks like fun and who hasn't danced under the stars, all good wishes, Sylvia Fayers
ReplyDeleteRadiant Star
ReplyDeleteMountain Roads. Corners look like mountain peaks, and the flying geese lined up look like roads leading to the mountains looking at the star in the sky. Also thought it might remind you of your time seeking a new cabin in the mountains!
ReplyDeleteStar surrounded
ReplyDeleteStar dance
REd Star at morning
Looking at your beautiful block I thought of Stars and Flowers and Star Flowers, because it looks like four flowers are surrounding a star block. Whatever you name it, it is a beauty.

ReplyDeletePulsar - was my first thought :-).
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this block! I can't wait to see the quilt you make with it. I vote with the others who say "Bonnie's Star". Intricate but not stressful to assemble. That is the theme behind all your beautiful work. Your name should go on this one. Thank you again for all that you do for quilters everywhere!
ReplyDeleteConsidering there's a big solar eclipse this year how about - Solar Eclipse.
ReplyDeleteImploding Star (who says it was going outwards?)
ReplyDeleteallisonpogany at gmail.com

Oh My Stars!!
ReplyDeleteStar Light.... Star Bright!!
ReplyDeleteExploding Star
ReplyDeleteSawtooth Beauty! It's a beautiful block.
ReplyDeleteHi Bonnie, My stab at naming your block is a simple one. "To the Point" that's it, plain and simple.
ReplyDeleteI am not good at naming things but how about Sparkling Stars, or Blossoming Stars? It is a very pretty block!
ReplyDeleteStars Over Virginia
ReplyDeleteHow about Cypress Star! Reminds me of the Cypress vine that grows wild with red star flowers. :-)

ReplyDeleteBonnie, I flat out love this block and can see it on my bed!!!!!!! How about "Stars on Fire" or "Blazing Stars"?
ReplyDeleteSplashing Stars. There are so many excellent names shared!
ReplyDeleteI thought "Flowering Star" would be an accurate description of the block and would be beautiful in any floral color- although a black gray and white would give a very modern look to the block as block could be enlarged and one block with borders would make a beautiful wall hanging or the center of a large bed quilt.
ReplyDeleteHow about:
ReplyDeleteStars in the Cabin
Stars From The Cabin
