What NOT to Wash!!

Busy quilters with distracted minds!

Doesn’t this describe the majority of us to a T? Or to a Q?

I came home from Oak Ridge, Tennessee and emptied my suitcase into the laundry. I didn’t think anything about it, I just sorted it as I usually do --- pants in one load, colors in another, whites in a third ----

This morning I went to get the laundry out of the dryer to pack my suitcase for my trip to Lexington Park, MD this morning and….

OH Geeze. I forgot to check my pockets!

My jeans had a whole bobbin of red thread that I was using to sew on a binding. Didn’t want to leave the red thread behind, so I stuck it in my pocket! What a MESS!

2011mystery 165

AUUGHH! A perfectly tangled waste of a perfectly good bobbin full of thread! This mess looks like it’s ready for the tie dye bath!

2011mystery 164

And yeah, my mind was wondering if I should save this thread tangle for Karen who does art quilts..could she use it for the hair on one of her portrait quilts? OH get real! I had to get packed and get on the road, no time for distraction here! I made quick work of the big kitchen shears. Okay, not so quick. Some of that thread was wrapped rather tight!

The car is packed, I’m ready to roll! I love driving up through Virginia, it should be such a pretty day! Temps in Lexington Park, MD should be mid 70’s through the weekend-- NICE!!

I’ve packed a machine just in case I have time to sew…but my main project is to cut and kit up pieces and parts to take with me next Wednesday for the trip I’m taking to Rangeley, Maine! Maine in October! I’m teaching at a retreat and you know my big request when I teach at retreats ---- as soon as class is over for the day I GET TO SEW TOO!! So…there will be loads of pieces cut this weekend in Maryland, so I can pack them back into my suitcase Tuesday night so I can fly off on Wednesday.

Just made the last run to the car with the bin of fabric scraps I’m taking…..Uhoh…look who wants to go too!

2011mystery 159

Awwww, Sadie, honey…you can’t come this time! ((It cracks me up how she loves to sit ON the seat just like a people person!!)) I’ll see you soon, sweet girl….hold down the fort while I’m gone, wontcha?

  1. Oh dear!! I've had many washing disasters - currently the washer is filled more with conkers than clothes since my daughter puts as many as she can in her pockets and I forget to check!! Safe journey :)

  3. Gosh Bonnie, If my dog was more social I'd say bring her and she could stay with us and visit you at the workshops. Yeah, I'm a dog lover...typed while the cat is in my lap looking at the keyboard like "Yeah, I could do that", lol

  5. At first I thought you were going to say that there were little red streaks on all the clothes.....I guess thread doesn't run. Thank goodness!

Have a safe drive up to MD.....should be beautiful!

  6. I washed an entire spool of thread. It did stay wound and intact, but I was unhappy. It dried out, but I don't know if it is useable or not.

  7. What a frustrating sight to find when opening the dryer! Must have done a nice "pressing" job on the clothes, too.
Oh, how sweet, your little canine companion wants to go with you--precious photo. Looks so eager and trusting.

  8. So far, Knock on wood, I haven't washed a bobbin full of thread. But I have washed one of our cell phones a couple years ago, now I diligently check pockets, as that was an expensive mistake.
Sadie is such a good quilting buddy, maybe some day she will get to go. I'm sure that is what she is thinking.lol
Have a great drive through Virginia.

  10. That cracked me up! Sorry, but, I can say that is one thing I haven't done...yet. Love it!

  11. Sadie's tired of you going off and leaving her. She figures if she's sitting in the car ready to go you'll take her with you. All the quilters would love her, she just knows that. :)

My washing disasters usually involve kleenex left in pockets. I think that's probably worse than thread even.

  16. Since you have a dog you adore, as I did, let me warn you that a forgotten half-stick of string cheese (dog treat) that makes it through the wash and into the dryer will have to be chipped off the interior with a screwdriver. I wish I was kidding but I know this from experience. Sending "Kisses from My Corner" of the country--that's the BH quilt in progress now.

My wash day disasters always involve kleenex or paper towels. My husband accuses me of trying to "recycle" them since I recycle so many other things.....cans,bottles, fabric. Joy in Wasilla, AK

  18. Better a Bobbin than a crayon or ink pen. Don't have to ask me why!! Safe travels, Bonnie.

Too late for me!I'm already on the scrapside and I haven't even got to see
Bonnie in person! I may never have to enter a quilt shop again.

  20. Chapstick is the WORST thing to wash, but it's good that the red thread didn't bleed on the clothes!

  21. Yikes -- I bet it made a racket, too! My DH is forever leaving his pocket knife in his pants and tossing it all in the washer/dryer. Now that *really* makes some noise! :)

  22. i think i have everyone beat here... i went to the thrift shop on my lunch hour a while back. bought some shirts to use in a scrappy quilt. well, see, there were also these really pretty wine glasses there that i bought. the gal at the register so kindly wrapped them in the shirts so they would not get broken... are you following this? yup, got home, threw the whole bag load of shirts in the washer, not remembering that the glasses were in with them. when that load was done, i pulled it out of my front loader and all this glass fell onto the floor in front of the washer. what a mess! i got a few more months out of the washer before the pump completely disintegrated.

  23. Poor Sadie. My dog likes to just sit in the car. He does not like it much when the car actually moves. LOL We have been taking him on short car trips and he is getting better.
Glad you got your laundry untangled.

  24. Ahhh - the things we find in the washing machine when we forget to check the pockets. Occasionally money, oftentimes facial tissue in shreads, and when there are kids still in the house, rocks, slips from school that were to be signed, and Hot Wheel cars.

I don't see how you are able to travel so much teaching. I love to teach but would hate to travel every week!!!! Yikes!!! I admire your dedication and stamina.

  25. Mom used to fine us heavily if we left coins in our pockets - there was one in particular - think it was a 2c coin (old South African money) - that was EXACTLY the right size to cause a serious and expensive blockage!

  26. Rangley Maine! I believe that is where I went through Cold Weather Survival School...what I would have given for a quilt when I was sleeping out in the woods....

  27. Better a bobbin than the two tubes of lipstick I washed and dried with my clothes last week. It's amazing how the lipstick could hit the front of every top in the load of laundry!

  28. Annoying about the bobbin thread. Now I get the cutting and kitting...
