There are some days that just run amok.
Run Amok. I love that term! It looks weird,
Do people even use this phrase anymore, or did it go the way of Jane Austen and maybe Agatha Christie?
I tried to come up with a better definition of yesterday, but here you have it.
Whatever there is there is an over abundance of AMOK in my life right now!
But first - take a look at this gorgeous array of beautiful coral to orange. This is my happiness and connection right now to the outside world. I love seeing each postmark and reading each note you've included. 2 days until my trip to India begins and these oranges are cut and kitted and going along for the journey.
Is there much Amok in India, I wonder? Likely. It seems to follow me around.
So many beauties in here!
Thank you from the bottom of my hexie loving heart. Seriously
We had a young man about Jeff's age who was riding an electric bike all the way from Lynchburg, Virginia to Burnsville. North Carolina but his electric bike lost power and we had been recharging him for a couple of hours on the porch. We fed him, rehydrated him, made him welcome.
But it was not charging fast enough and I was worried about him riding the dark, wondering where/how he'd sleep, etc. This could be MY kid. So what did we do?
I called Dave, he came to meet me and we loaded his bike into the back of the van and just drove him to his family in Burnsville - about 100 miles from here. It was where he needed to go.
I just keep thinking that this could be my kid. He was kind of a rough kid with tattoos from head to toe but he'd been here helping welcome the ladies and unpack their cars. I just needed to get him somewhere safe.
His name was David. So we had David the passenger, and Dave the driver.
Burnsville is lovely! And this was some of what we drove through.
At any rate, we got him to his relative's place by 7pm. It was 8pm by the time Dave and I got back to Boone realizing we were starving. Thank heavens for Chili's and their later night hours.
We rolled into home at 10pm and straight to bed, but I couldn't fall asleep. I just kept thinking of this young man and where his life could go from here. I'll never know. We didn't exchange information. We were just strangers who saw a need and wanted to get him home where he is safe.
From here, he has a clean slate and is hopefully waking up at the blank page of his life in front of him today. It's his to decide what to do with.
Of course these guys were wondering why their dinner was so late.
So here we are on Thursday morning. The Spooligans are in the house.
There is much retreat fun to be had.
I'm still working on website stuff.
I have still not packed for India. I need to do laundry tonight and get that packing thing done tomorrow.
I made ONE String Star block yesterday (That was when David came knocking at my door.)
And I'm hoping no more Amok things come my way today.
Quiltville Quote of the Day -
All of that time we spend is worth every stitch we take.
(Even though some days there is no stitching time at all,)
Will you be spending time with needle and thread today?
Have a terrific Thursday, everyone -

The news mentioned it has been the hottest summer in India. Take heed.
ReplyDeleteWe need more people in this world like you and Dave, who see a need and just do what needs to be done. You will never know how your kindness has touched David's life, but I am sure he will never forget you. We never know how the ripples we each create affect others who cross our path. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI would have done the same thing for that young man, a good reason for letting your day get away. Have a great trip.
ReplyDeleteThank God for people like you that don't look at the outside package but the person inside! I am so glad that you helped that young man. I'm sure you made a difference in his life that will last in his memory for a long time.
ReplyDeleteLoved the story of helping David! AND that photograph of the glorious landscape on the way to Burnsville. I see a landscape quilt, or a color palette for a future Quiltville Mystery!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good soul you are. Thanks for being an inspiration of kindness. Nancy F
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for doing that, and for sharing about it. I think it builds the inclination towards generosity when we hear about people we respect (aka you!) doing such generous kind things like this. It's a good reminder for me, to put out an icy bottle of water for the delivery driver bringing me a very heavy box of groceries today!
ReplyDeleteI hope you're able to get some sleep and mayyyyyyyybe squeeze in a nap or whatever you decide you need today!
You were his Angels yesterday. Blessings for your serving a
ReplyDeletestranger. Hope you can enjoy your trip. I will miss the daily postings. I'll be stitching hexies on my travels. Hand delivering a DWR to our son and Daughter by Love next week. Sorry my oranges will have to be after this trip. Finding more to send to you. I didn't think I had that much orange in my Stash. Do you need Grays too? Safe travels!
Sometimes you just have to run with the amok! You mentioned taking a picture of what you're working on... I often do that as well and will take it one step further by editing the picture to make it grayscale. It really helps me to see where I need more contrast and when I have everything well balanced.

Your time, effort and gas to drive that person 100 miles is huge! I believe that a what goes around comes around and one act like yours is the start of ripples in the pond. Blessings go out and find a way to return to you!
ReplyDeleteThank you for helping David and prayers lifted for a great trip to India. :)
ReplyDeleteHelping another is not amok, and you may have prevented his day/night from running amok. Ripples. He'll remember you many times and maybe your kindness will guide his future choices. We never know.
ReplyDeleteThere's a good movie called Hocus Pocus, with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as 3 witches. Hilarious, family friendly. SJP says the line "Amok, amok, amok" and that's the voice in my head every time I hear the word. (For me it represents the fun of the movie more than chaos, so I tend to think of "amok" as wild fun.) Hope your trip is wild fun!! Enjoy!

Burnsville is a lovely town. I'll bet you missed their lovely quilt shop. Too bad because they are really nice! The mountains are wonderful. It's a great weekend getaway!
ReplyDeleteOh Bonnie! Thank you for helping him. We are in desperate need of kindness and empathy these days.
ReplyDeleteThere must be a beacon shining above Quiltville that lets wayward animals and travelers know that good people live there. Put aside the worries about the website, get packed and enjoy your visit to India. Live in the moment because that's really all there is.
ReplyDeleteJust another reason why we love you! I thought you were going to let him stay overnight & keep charging his bike. You and Dave are truly angels helping this young man out. It will be repaid ten fold.
ReplyDeleteI caught a glimpse of the Blue Ridge Mountains when we visited my stepdaughter in Asheville. We fell in love instantly. Of course, we're in South Central Texas were there is nothing like that to begin with!! :-)
I hope you get all packed up and enjoy your trip. Safe travels and take care!
