Hexie Quilt Update & More!

It's impossible to do anything...ANYTHING...around here without fur coated helpers jumping in.

It sure makes things interesting to say the least.

What was going on?

I laid out my hexie quilt top so I could see just where I needed to start adding the next hexie row to the mothership.

"Zoey, can you move please?"

I got this far.  One more evening of stitching should do it. Then on to the next 3 large motifs!

Yesterday I went to physical therapy for some dry needling (Like acupuncture but involves electric stim into the needles...it's not as bad as it sounds) and I was doing really well with much less pain until last night. I reached for my phone from where I was sitting on the couch and everything tightened up again.

I'm so over this...I don't know what it's going to take to make the neck/upper back radiating down into my arm pain go away.

I'll be taking it easy this weekend.  There is a porch and a group of quilters to visit with.  I'm taking the low road.

String piecing underway!

And something cute with hearts and connector blocks.  Sweet!

By 11am all of the quilters had exited the inn and were quilt shop hopping in Galax!  It's our Virginia Quilt Shop Hop month and there is no stopping quilters who are  bound to go participate in the fun.

By mid afternoon all were back with purchases and smiles on their faces.

Later in the afternoon the top was together!

Sweet sampler blocks from Pat Sloan.

It's in a book - not sure which one. Will get info later -

Any guesses what is going on here?

It's a color wash of scrappiness!

More fun blocks in batiks -

And a sweet flag for the eason!

This is a Lori Holt pattern booklet.

Quilt tops are coming together already!

Love the red/neutrals

Here's the pattern -

What a difference a change in colors makes!

This lovely finish is from a kit.

Sweet butterflies!

Also like butterflies!

This quilt was made with neutrals from a group swap.

More Hearts of Hope from my Solidarity PDF patter booklet are happening here for a granddaughter who asked for one of her own.  These are her school colors!

It's going to require a lot more hearts - it's got to fit her bed!

After therapy I managed to piece a few more of these blocks. I'm thinking wall hanging. Not super small, but not extra big, either. Maybe something like 6 X 6. We'll see.

I've always like quilts in primary colors. Red, Yellow. Blue.

Today? Much like yesterday.  The quilters will be quilting and I am planning on porch enjoyment time and just taking it easy this weekend.

Monday we'll be drawing for our String Rings winners!

  2. hi Bonnie,
So sorry to hear about your pain in your neck and arm. It sounds like the same problem I had several years ago. I quit using artificial sugar like Sugar Twin. It helped right away. Arthritis is another reason. I hope you feel better very soon. I know there are others who will offer a cure but I wanted to share my experience. Thanks for all you give to us quilters. Kathy

If you will send me your address, I will send you a cream combo from Rowe Casa that should help with your neck and shoulder. Put them on every night in this order: magnesium, nerve cream, then muscle & joint right on top of each other. The magnesium cream on the bottom of your feet each night is good for neuropathy too pjmh4u@gmail.com. Thanks for all the hard work you do on your blog!

Sorry to hear about the pinched nerve. I had a pinched nerve on my right side 1.5 yrs ago after experiencing the same thing about 9 months before that. Both times it was about a three month recovery. The pain radiating down my arm was miserable. With a lot of PT I was able add to my existing exercises and I have had no flare up since. Getting older is not for sissies.
Best of luck on your recovery.
Love the hexie quilt. Can’t wait to see it all together.

I love seeing your dog on your quilt. Any time that I lay one out on the floor, my dog instantly goes to it. I think they realize how much love goes into them and they want to be a part of it.

Sore shoulders are very frustrating. I have a similar problem and found a copper bracelet with magnets really calmed things down. I can sleep now and do my sewing. It worked within hours after I put it on. It's not a perfect cure, but makes life a whole lot easier. Good luck with your shoulder!

Do you have a particular thread you like to use when stitching your hexies together? Any suggestions on selecting the color of thread? Serena

I sympathize with your neck pain. My PT used heat and then an half hour of massage to relax the muscles. I could not turn my neck without sharp pain radiating down my spine and into my shoulders. It took several visits over a few weeks. I do my exercises, turn my neck and helping it turn by using my hand with a bit of pressure, left and then right. What sweet release. Hope your treatments are successful. As an aside, ask if a neck brace would be beneficial when you are quilting. Keeps your neck in a neutral position. 🍓Dotti in CT

Have you heard of Red light therapy? You can find different size pads on Amazon. My husband swears by it for his shoulder and back pain. A friend used it for her leg pain when she couldn’t get in to the neurologist for a month and after two days was pain free and canceled her appointment. I use one on my wrist for tendinitis and it helps me. Good luck and feel better. Kathy in AZ

  11. I'm so sorry about the nerve pain. Wishing you speedy and easy recovery!!

I've never tried FPP but these Romania-inspired blocks are making me want to try! I love those super skinny stripes acting as a frame, and what sharp precise piecing you're able to get with this strategy. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and how you're never done trying new things. <3

Whenever the furbaby helps me with my quilting...I take it to me she approves of my work. That's my way of putting a positive spin on the fact that I cannotttttt get any stitching done if there's a cat on top of it!!

Love all the quilts you showed. I really like the small blocks you are creating from your trip. I would love the measurements when you have completed your mini project. Keep them coming. Great to see Zoey.

  14. After having completed MSQC's Golden Hexi embroidery quilt for my penpal in Australia, since 1959, so for 67 years, I am working on embroidering MSQC's Favorite Things for a future great-grandchild I may never be alive to see. I turn 75 this year and our oldest grandchild is 17 and the youngest turns 2 next month. I label all my quilts and all the family have theirs, but I want to leave something as a legacy for the future generation.
