I spent yesterday with the Nimble Thimble Quilters in Mauldin, South Carolina – stitching up Scrappy Trips blocks in a flurry of happy scrappiness!
Our workshop was held at Marietta’s Quilt & Sew, and we enjoyed the wonderful class room space, not to mention the close proximity to more fabric and goodes!
And the sale table.
Oh, the sale table!
Scrappy Trips is a quilt that means a lot to me. I first presented this quilt back in 2003 when I moved to Columbia, SC due to the hubster’s job transfer. The pattern, first housed on my website, and later moved to the blog was written for a comfort quilt workshop I was teaching for the guild as I then held the position of comfort quilt chair-person. We were doing sew-ins about 3 times a year, getting everyone involved making quilts together to gift to those in need.
If you have ever been the charity quilt person for your guild, then you KNOW the kinds of mis-matched fabric donations that come in, much of it less than beautiful. This quilt was a WINNER when it came to using these fabrics, and if they were all cut and kitted up, quilters could just take the kits home and bring them back as a top the next month. it was fun to see that fabric be turned into beautiful quilts to cover others with love.
It’s also been a top workshop for me in encouraging others to let go and LET SCRAPPY HAPPEN!
It’s happening, all right!
Look at them hard at work!
Sew Many Strip Sets!
Slicing and Dicing!
Happy Halloween Even!
One of these is not like the others!
In every class I give options. The pattern for Scrappy Trips is found under the Free Patterns tab at the top of the blog. You can cut your strip sleeve into squares, or you can also go rectangular, as inspired by my quilt Rectangle Wrangle from Scraps & Shirttails II. I love this take with more modern fabrics!
Looking at our blocks at the end of the day!
All sewn in ONE DAY!
Isn’t it fun to see everyone’s blocks together? Look at those 5 blocks of a different color! They look like a shadow don’t they? Gorgeous batiks, they are going to make a very deep and rich looking quilt!

Today’s Quiltville Quote:
For the Peacemaker in the Piecemakers!
There are those around who crave drama and attention, creating their own little pity parties wherever they go. Don't participate. Just because you were invited, doesn't mean you need to attend. Smile, leave them to their own self-created chaos, and go sew something! It will make the world a better place.

I’m holed up in the hotel this morning, with mostly a free day until my lecture this evening. It’s actually WONDERFUL because I have a round of book stuff to tackle this morning that needs to be sent back by this afternoon. I’ll be quietly tapping away. If I finish, I’ve got sewing! A quiet retreat day to myself. No need to go out for food even, last night’s dinner provided enough leftovers to keep me happy and well fed.
Heading home tomorrow!
Have a great Monday, everyone!

Sounds like a great day for you.
I love seeing the variations in this quilt as different people do theirs. The young woman who is making a great number of these for foster kids got me thinking about making one or two myself for that purpose. Thanks for showing yet more inspiration from these clever quilters.
I've made your scrappy trips quilt a couple of times. It is one I feel like I can use anything! I think I might need to do another this year, after I do the two quilts on my agenda for men's shirts. Gee I wonder why I have so many men's shirts...Thanks for all you do for us, Bonnie. You are a great inspiration and I always find at least ONE post a week that motivates me to get crackin'!
I see a scrappy trips in my neat future as well. I can incorporate that into RSC16...lets see this month, is blue with purple accents. I could have a lot of fun with. Have a great solitary retreat day.
Hi Bonnie
I have tried the mitered/flange binding you showed on f/b, but I top stitched in the ditch with regular thread, it looks almost hidden between the two fabrics.
Using feature thread looks terrific too, can't wait to try.

I have fabrics all picked out for Rectangle Wrangle. Can't wait til I get to that one on my list!
Honestly scrappy trips looks like just about THE best 'if it is an ugly fabric throw it in" type pattern. Somehow all comes out well... I love it!
Good you took an in-hotel day to both relax and yet work too. Take care...keep warm and get to quilting Girl!

Bonnie I noticed in the slide show some wonderful wooden tables that some Singer Featherweights were sitting in. Any idea where one could find one of them. They looked absolutely beautiful and very usefull.
