100 Blocks Vol 8 Blog Tour!!

myblockisin8_200
Hi Everyone!

I’m very excited to be participating on the first day of the blog hop promoting Quiltmaker Magazine’s 100 blocks by 100 designers, Volume 8!

This is the 7th consecutive issue I have participated in, and let me tell you, these issues get better and better and better!

There are blocks of every kind to suit every taste, from traditional and modern pieced blocks, to paper pieced blocks – blocks for appliquers and embellishers and embroiderers alike!

I just love looking at the variety of blocks and all the different techniques used to make them and am so inspired by what is pulled together all in one volume for you!

My block started out as a “What can I do with all these left over bonus triangles” experiment!

The first block I did  came from the bonus triangles from several Boxy Stars quilts that were donated to charity.  I made the block from the bonus triangles in random scraps in 2005:

scrapcrystals1 (1)

Saving bonus triangles in usable sizes mean I actually DO use them!  I used my Bonus Triangle Buddy to mark my second sewing line giving me triangle squares that give me an even measurement for ease of use!

Click HERE to learn how to save your bonus units so they are ready to go!

For volume 8 of 100 blocks – I wondered if I could tone down my usual scrappy everything look – for a bit more of a subtle color way:

scrapcrystals1

I love blue and green together!

I dug into my blue and green scraps and my pre-cut squares from my Scrap User's System, including things like civil war, batik, old calicoes, recycled shirts, plaids stripes and everything under the sun as long as it was in these two color families.  My usual love of scrappy neutrals as a background canvas did the job I wanted it to do – and there is everything in these backgrounds too including recycled plaids and stripes, batik, prints from the 1980s and modern black on whites!

You might even notice that not all the star points match perfectly.  I sewed my block on my 1911 singer treadle machine.  I’m not the best treadler out there, but I give it a good shot.

I loved this block so much that after I sent it off  to Quiltmaker I just kept sewing!

In the gallery section of the magazine you will find my Scrap Crystals block in a finished quilt:

scrapcrystals2

No pattern is given in the magazine for the full quilt, but it will be making an appearance in my next book, More Adventures with Leaders & Enders, published by Kansas City Star and due out in Spring 2014!

Please visit Quiltmaker’s Blog, Quilty Pleasures for more goodies and give-aways  HERE!  All of the other participants of this blog hop are listed on the Quiltmaker blog, so don’t miss out.

If you are new to Quiltville, I hope you’ll stick around and explore a bit!  There are a multitude of tabs at the top of the blog to direct you to things like my Free Patterns, Tips & Techniques, Vintage Sewing Machines and to my Quilt-Cam –when I am home and not traveling teaching quilting, I will turn on the live web cam in my studio and you can sew along with me!  These episodes are archived on YouTube and are all accessible by the links in the Quilt-Cam tab.

You will also notice a tab called Celtic Solstice!  Every year I run a Reader Appreciation Mystery.  Celtic Solstice is this year’s online mystery and our introductory post is linked at the bottom of the tab with the yardage requirements, colors and other info to participate in this year’s mystery which starts November 29th!  It’s a ton of fun---I hope you’ll play along!

We've also got a very active Facebook community, over 37,000 readers strong!  Click the link at the bottom of this post to like our Facebook page and keep up with what we are doing there.  Feel free to share photos of your quilts in progress and share with others!

This blog is updated at least twice a day so you will want to keep up with the latest news and adventures of a traveling itinerant quilter.  There is always something fun to read in Quiltville!

Now – the good part!

Would you like to be in the Giveaway?  I’m going to choose THREE WINNERS!  2 will receive signed copies of Quiltmaker’s 100 blocks, vol 8 from me…and one winner will have it shipped to them directly from Quiltmaker!

Leave me a comment in the comments section below.  If you've made any of my quilts before, tell me something about your favorite!

Remember - your email address MUST be visible in your profile, or in your comment to win.  If I have no way to contact you back, I'll have to choose someone else!

The drawing will be open until Sunday, November 17th when I will draw the winners.

Happy Hopping, everyone!

This block is a great on to use up a lot of my scraps. Because of you, I now keep triangles by my machine to use as leaders & enders, so maybe I will be able to make this block sometime soon.

Well, I haven't been able to quilt or sew for the past month due to a major move. But I have gotten my quilting fix by reading your blog! That blue and green "crystals" quilt is just gorgeous! Thanks for the chance to win and helping me be motivated to finish setting up my sewing room.

Thank you so much for all you do for the quilting community Bonnie! Scrap quilts are my favorite and I love how you always come up with great ways to use an abundance of scraps! the most recent quilt I've made from your directions is Old Tobacco Road. Great fun! I have 2 of your books and they call my name regularly. I would love to win this book...just to have 100 more temptations and inspirations.

Laura said...

Love this block! I am trying to use my scraps, and this looks like a good one to try.

Bonnie, I haven't finished any of your quilts, but I do have 3 leaders and enders on the go, and I still want to make Easy Street. Thanks for the chance to win.

What a great block! Thanks for sharing :)

I was sooo happy when I first found your website. I have made the boxy stars and just finished a quilt I call scrappy wonky stars, because you convinced me I could make pints that dont have to match. I didnt have that many triange pieces of scraps, so I started begging for friends to give me all the tiny pieces that they would normally throw away. Now I have 5 0ne gallon baggies full , AFTER I made the quilt, and it is queen sized. People are amazed that even the background is scraps that would have been thrown away. Keep up all your good scrappy work, and know you are inspiring others whose motto has been, "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without"

Marca said...

I have tried some of your free patterns and recently bought one of your books. This block is right up my alley! It looks like a fun one.

I've been following your blog for several years now and I love hearing about your projects and travels! I feel like I've made several of your patterns, but the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Boxy Stars. I bought my first ever jelly roll to make that quilt and I still love it!

what a great pattern to use up scraps

Lori L said...

I have made Easy Street and Lazy Sunday and loved doing them both. The piecing gave me a challenge because of all the angles, but that made me slow down and enjoy the process more. I have also made charity quilts using some of the free patterns on your blog. Thanks for such a fun to follow blog and of course thanks for all the giveaways.

One of the quilts most used it the double delight and I really love the Orange Crush for the colours I used and the fabrics...
I did last years mysterie with a FQ-bundle, which was great... and I chose red, purple, blue and green for the new mysterie and it is going to be really, really scrappy...

My name is Adrianne and this is the first time I've been to your site, but I love what I've seen! I'll be bookmarking this one for sure! And it's good to know that even more experienced quilters don't always get their blocks 'lined up.' I feel a little bit better now! I made 1 quilt 20 years ago (a quilt as you go) but, never sewed another stitch after that. I've 'picked up the needle' again recently and am having a BLAST! Loving technology and being able to 'pick the brains' of other quilters! I do NOT however, understand how this particular way of posting replies works, so I hope this does ....

I love scrappy quilts and am one of your loyal fans. Your block does not disappoint and would make a lovely quilt. I have wondered if I love scrappy so much because that is what I grew up with. We are using a scrappy Jacob's Ladder quilt that my mother made for our bedspread. You have gotten me saving scraps in a different way which I think is going to be very useful, and I am saving crumbs now instead of throwing them away. Thanks for all your wonderful work. Would love to be in one of your classes some time

Holy moly!! Over 700 comments already! I've made four quilts using your patterns and am working on two more, using your "scrap saver" method and men's shirts (that I have cut apart) --- and I love them all. Never enough time to do all that I want --- but it sure beats being bored!

I made your dancing nine patch. Most of the nine patches were leader enders. I donated the quilt to a Dakota Indian mission. The woman who received it was hugging the quilt and smiling in the photo they sent yo me.

I started quilting earlier this year so I haven't tried one of your designs yet. Hoping to win the book.

I've never made one of your quilts--yet--but I do LOVE scrappy quilts. This block delights because of the star-in-stars. Sweet!

Wonderful block! Such a great way to use those scraps.

I have done two mysteries...roll, roll cotton boll and easy street. I learned a lot doing both. I love seeing how others interpret your design with their own fabrics and colors. I have learned so much from you since I first found scraps and shirt tails...especially how to manage my stash and scraps, how go experiment with color and pattern, and especially that I don't have to be a fabric "snob" to make beautiful quilts.

hi Bonnie since joining your blog I have enjoyed putting my scraps in to the scrap user system and making several of your quilts I would love the opportunity to win one of the hundred quilt block books. I was in a rut of never being able to put scraps together and yet I love the scrappy look so I was very glad when I found your blog you are truly a gifted person thank you for sharing your gift with all of us.
