100 Blocks Vol 8 Blog Tour!!

myblockisin8_200
Hi Everyone!

I’m very excited to be participating on the first day of the blog hop promoting Quiltmaker Magazine’s 100 blocks by 100 designers, Volume 8!

This is the 7th consecutive issue I have participated in, and let me tell you, these issues get better and better and better!

There are blocks of every kind to suit every taste, from traditional and modern pieced blocks, to paper pieced blocks – blocks for appliquers and embellishers and embroiderers alike!

I just love looking at the variety of blocks and all the different techniques used to make them and am so inspired by what is pulled together all in one volume for you!

My block started out as a “What can I do with all these left over bonus triangles” experiment!

The first block I did  came from the bonus triangles from several Boxy Stars quilts that were donated to charity.  I made the block from the bonus triangles in random scraps in 2005:

scrapcrystals1 (1)

Saving bonus triangles in usable sizes mean I actually DO use them!  I used my Bonus Triangle Buddy to mark my second sewing line giving me triangle squares that give me an even measurement for ease of use!

Click HERE to learn how to save your bonus units so they are ready to go!

For volume 8 of 100 blocks – I wondered if I could tone down my usual scrappy everything look – for a bit more of a subtle color way:

scrapcrystals1

I love blue and green together!

I dug into my blue and green scraps and my pre-cut squares from my Scrap User's System, including things like civil war, batik, old calicoes, recycled shirts, plaids stripes and everything under the sun as long as it was in these two color families.  My usual love of scrappy neutrals as a background canvas did the job I wanted it to do – and there is everything in these backgrounds too including recycled plaids and stripes, batik, prints from the 1980s and modern black on whites!

You might even notice that not all the star points match perfectly.  I sewed my block on my 1911 singer treadle machine.  I’m not the best treadler out there, but I give it a good shot.

I loved this block so much that after I sent it off  to Quiltmaker I just kept sewing!

In the gallery section of the magazine you will find my Scrap Crystals block in a finished quilt:

scrapcrystals2

No pattern is given in the magazine for the full quilt, but it will be making an appearance in my next book, More Adventures with Leaders & Enders, published by Kansas City Star and due out in Spring 2014!

Please visit Quiltmaker’s Blog, Quilty Pleasures for more goodies and give-aways  HERE!  All of the other participants of this blog hop are listed on the Quiltmaker blog, so don’t miss out.

If you are new to Quiltville, I hope you’ll stick around and explore a bit!  There are a multitude of tabs at the top of the blog to direct you to things like my Free Patterns, Tips & Techniques, Vintage Sewing Machines and to my Quilt-Cam –when I am home and not traveling teaching quilting, I will turn on the live web cam in my studio and you can sew along with me!  These episodes are archived on YouTube and are all accessible by the links in the Quilt-Cam tab.

You will also notice a tab called Celtic Solstice!  Every year I run a Reader Appreciation Mystery.  Celtic Solstice is this year’s online mystery and our introductory post is linked at the bottom of the tab with the yardage requirements, colors and other info to participate in this year’s mystery which starts November 29th!  It’s a ton of fun---I hope you’ll play along!

We've also got a very active Facebook community, over 37,000 readers strong!  Click the link at the bottom of this post to like our Facebook page and keep up with what we are doing there.  Feel free to share photos of your quilts in progress and share with others!

This blog is updated at least twice a day so you will want to keep up with the latest news and adventures of a traveling itinerant quilter.  There is always something fun to read in Quiltville!

Now – the good part!

Would you like to be in the Giveaway?  I’m going to choose THREE WINNERS!  2 will receive signed copies of Quiltmaker’s 100 blocks, vol 8 from me…and one winner will have it shipped to them directly from Quiltmaker!

Leave me a comment in the comments section below.  If you've made any of my quilts before, tell me something about your favorite!

Remember - your email address MUST be visible in your profile, or in your comment to win.  If I have no way to contact you back, I'll have to choose someone else!

The drawing will be open until Sunday, November 17th when I will draw the winners.

Happy Hopping, everyone!

Honestly I have never won anything but I keep entering! I can't find one thing I don't like that you do Bonnie. I follow you where ever you go...I even sit with you in airports, watch all of your visits near and far and I am even tired, drained when your day is done because all of the adventures you have taken me on.
With that said, thank you for all that you share with us, you are the best, oh thanks to you I have about 7 projects started. Yes, I will finish them with time...well, we will hope for the best. Have a wonderful Veteran's day, thanks to all who served for our freedom, let freedom ring ♥

I am relatively new to your blog and can't get enough! I am in on the Celtic Solstice Mystery, will be my first mystery quilt, I am excited! I have made two blocks Boxy Stars in pinks and greens, inspired from Quilt Cam. Learning the leader and ender system and really feel productive. Thanks for giveaway opportunity.

I am excited to see the new book and your entry to it. I am a collector of quilting books and would love the opportunity to add a special one with meaning to my collection. This list is really long already, but I hope I get a chance to win. Thanks, Bonnie!

Hi. I've finished Easy Street - the only one I've done so far. But while looking for the quilt pattern DH picked out for our bed several years ago, I found that I've collected quite a few of the Quiltmaker 100's and quite a few of your mystery quilts. I think that's what he gets to choose from as I can't find that pattern anywhere!

I just purchased your three books and have signed up for your classes when you come to Tennessee in March 2014. You are one of the most fun teachers to follow. You have a good day and 'keep scrappin'

Beautiful block! I just love what you are able to make with your leftovers! You have made a scrap saver out of me. Hope to win (or plan to purchase) the Quiltmakers 100 blocks Vol. 8.
Also, looking forward to starting Celtic Solstice. Still putting together my fabrics.

Darlene B said...

I have made 2 Bricks and Cobblestones quilts and have also used your "yellow pages" technique for string quilts. Love your block!

Jennifer said...

Awesome block! I'm definitely ready to use up my bonus HST collection and this is perfect! I've made so many of your patterns that I have a rather impressive collection, if I do say so myself. Still, of all the quilts I've made from your patterns, I believe my favorite is Christmas Lights. It was the first mystery quilt I made, the first of your patterns I made and, as I was making it, unintentionally made enough blocks/units for two quilts - without even realizing it. The quilts were gifted to my sisters-in-law.

Mom C said...

I love the scrappy look and feel so virtuous when I'm doing a scrappy quilt. I always tell my husband that "this one didn't cost anything, it's all from my scraps." And bless him, he never mentions that I had to buy the fabric sometime. I generally don't use patterns or kits because I get stressed when I see the cutting requirements and the number of fabrics required. Which makes no sense to me, I don't mind doing a hundred or more HST but I don't want to see it all laid out and know how much I'll have to do. Thanks.

Unknown said...

love your designs!

Deb said...

I love that block. Thank you for the chance to win a copy. I have made several of your patterns. I really enjoyed making Orange Crush this past year.

I have been reading your blog for about 2 months now and am really interested in trying some of your patterns. I am very interested in the Celtic Solstice as I visited Ireland in 1970. I have already started to pick out fabrics from my stash.. I have also started doing some leaders and enders as I am working on other projects. Thanks.

Susie said...

Thank you for all you do. I'm trying to find the courage to treadle. I bought a Red Eye 1910 61-1 with the back clamping feet. Love the scrappy look.

love your block, Bonnie. I'm definitely a fan of your work!

Unknown said...

I love working with scraps of fabric and have a 1946 Singer Treadle on which I do all my free motion quilting as it has such a large harp and gives a lovely stitch. There is something quite mesmerising when using the treadle and following FMQ lines. This is my first visit to your blog but I am so glad I found it through the giveaways as I will be following your travels in quilting in future. Thank you Stay2smile@gmail.com

Sue Hilton said...

Your leader/ender concept got me started doing this about a year ago. It's addictive! I would love to win a copy of this book so I can put them all to use. Thank you!

Linda said...

Wow! Scrap Crystals is beautiful. I can't wait for your new book. This will definitely be the first quilt that I will make. I have made lots of your quilts. I think my favorite is Virginia Bound, but I am also very fond of Carolina Crossroads.

Hello Bonnie!
I'm just one of your many followers. You know I've made a bunch of your designs and continue to as long as I have fabric. Of course that certainly won't ever be an issue for me. I can't name just one design that I like over all the others, but I do like the name I gave one of them over all the others best..."Kwitcherbitchin" that is your Pfefferneuse from String Fling. Thanks for a chance to win. Sandi

mb-RI said...

Yeah - thanks for the give-away. Can not wait for your mystery to begin! Already ironing the scrap pile.

Hi,
I have started cutting up my scraps using your Scrap Saver's System and cannot wait to use them in some quilts. If only I didn't have to work! :-( Thanks for all the inspiration!

One year our heritage barn at the Almonte Agricultural Fair grounds burned down. A bunch of us got together with bags of crumbs and made the most amazing crumb quilt ever. We donated it to the Agricultural society to raffle and the proceeds went to help raise the new barn. Thanks for the great idea!!!!

Bonnie I love your scrappy designs, and once again, you do not disappoint! Love this one too, and I too love blues and greens together so am adding this to my ever-growing list of quilts to make.
I did Talkin' Turkey from 100 Blocks, Vol. 5 and String Fling (showed it to you in Bangor ME last May), and am now working on Jamestown Landing. Thank you for all your great designs, and inspiration. Wish I had half your energy!

I made Bricks and Stepping Stones using purple scraps for the bricks and kept the four patches black and white. I used more purple strips in a piano key border. I will try to send you a photo sometime. I have used the 2 inch squares to make 4 patches leader/ender style that I then used in placemats and sashing and borders for a wall hanging. Love your work and would love to have this book. Thanks.

Unknown said...

A favorite? Can't have just one, I'm working on the Shirttails top from the Colorado class I took with you in Oct, finishing up easy street and loving the ease of using the rulers and how I can save fabric, time and my sanity all at once. Love to win , I have the other 7, Kathy

Loris said...

Quiltmaker 100 Blocks are such fun issues! I love seeing something from each of the designers. I have loved your leader/ender technique for some time now and have made an "extra" quilt top while sewing another. Thank you!

I love all that you make, but sadly I have to say I've not made any of your quilts. I like controlled scrappy and I like stars. Your block is beautiful. I do save my leftover half square triangles so some day I will do something with them.

Hi Bonnie, I've done all your mysteries and some of your other free patterns as well. So far my favorite quilt is Jacob Takes a Wife. Seconded by Orange Crush. Thanks so much for all you do.

Unknown said...

Another giveaway? How special!! I can't wait until the mystery begins....but I will have to wait until the 1st to begin....I will be spending that week at our cabin in the northwoods of Wisconsin. I will be sewing up a storm on my 1913 Singer treadle, while the guys are hunting. No electricity....means no phones, tv or computers. So I will have to wait until we come back to civilization to begin. Unless, you would be willing to give me a sneak peek so I can work on it while I'm on my quilting retreat....please??? :)

I've never made one of your patterns, but I am getting ready to change that! I've pulled fabric for Celtic Solstice and also signed up for a class you are teaching in Texas at the end of the year. I am excited. Great block, by the way!! Your sample quilt is lovely, too. Can't wait to see the pattern in a future book.

One of my greatest thrills was attending your Pferrneuse class in Plano, Texas last year and then meeting you at the Dallas Quilt Guild meeting. Thanks for being you. The quilt world wouldn't be the same without you....and I would love to win the book. Thanks again.

Bonnie, I love Scrap Crystals and the finished quilt! I always buy these magazines but always have a difficult time finding them out here in Podunk. Winning one from you would be wonderful. BTW, I am ready for Celtic Solstice.

I made so many of your quilts! I guess my favorite was last years' mystery because it was in my daughter n laws favorite colors. As soon as she saw the fabric she said that one is mine. This would be an excellent additional to my library of books. I have enough ideas to quilt from now until I'm 50 and probably still couldn't do them all. I almost enjoy reading through the books as much as I do the quilting.

I was introduced to your site and methods a year ago. I did Easy Street and really liked the results. I did another scrappy quilt and have strips separated by size which is saving some of those really awful pieces that somehow came home with me but are just too ugly to use. I have volumes 6 and 7 which I found on the news stand. I really like the accuracy of the directions and would welcome volume 8.

I have been following you on FaceBook and love your posts. Very soon, I will begin a quilt pattern of yours. First, I am getting some UFO's completed. Thanks for this contest. How fun! 5gustos@gmail.com

After hearing you in Tallahassee last November, I made a string quilt out of my husband's old shirts to give to my grandson. I named it POPS SHIRTTAILS. I'm sure it will bring back many memories when he is being warmed by it. I would use the book to make quilts for my other grandchildren if I won it. Thanks for all the inspiration you have given to me. cjomorris@aol.com

I just found your page a few weeks ago, I love it I found a quilt you made a few yrs back bowtie with cheddar, fell in love with it and I am trying to make one only got to 50 blocks so far , I have a long ways to go. I am making the 3d bowtie instead of the cut corners, it is so fun and looking pretty good if I do say so myself. I have not masterd your leader ender yet but am trying as I love the chain sewing. thanks for all you share with us.

Nice block! I really like the blues and greens to make it semi-scrappy.

I too enjoy your blog, and I enjoy sewing along with you via your web cam. I enjoy seeing the vintage sewing machines you use to make such pretty blocks! It is easy to feel that unless you have a pricey machine with all the bells and whistles, your quilt will look inferior, but you prove otherwise. I also like the beautiful quilt blocks you make using scraps, the end product of which becomes a stunning quilt. Thanks so much for being so down to earth and sharing your quilting skills with others!

Love your block. Watching you on Quilt Cam, your blogs, Facebook posts all have given me a deep love of scrappy. I use your scrap users system as much as I can with my limited space. Thank you for sharing your love of quilting and wonderful talents with us!

I just learned about you and your quilts - and love of scraps - this past summer. I love your quilts and have begun to organize my scraps into usuable sizes. I am excited to work on Celtic Solstice as I just returned from a wonderful trip to Ireland and it would be a wonderful remind of my trip. I enjoy reading your blog, and am amazed at your stamina for all the traveling! P.S. i have two Featherweights, both from the early 50's

After 2 years of being an avid follower of your blog and Facebook posts, I have *finally* started cutting up my scraps into widths according to your system and using Leaders/Enders in all my projects! Now that I'm on the bandwagon, I have attempted several Crayon Boxes, an I Spy 4 Patch, am in the middle of a Floating Nine Patch and have a Scrappy Trips waiting in the wings. All of these have gone to or are destined for my local Project Linus chapter for needy/sick kiddos around El Paso, TX.

Thank you for all that you do to entertain, teach and inspire your fellow quilters around the world!!!

Oh my sooo many comments. I would love to receive one of the 100 block magazines. I usually buy one when they come out. I have made a couple of your mysteries. But I do love the Orca Bay the most. I made it in brown, teals, and pink. It is not quilted yet but when it is I will send a pic to you! Keep on doing all the great things you do!

Jan In FL said...

I LOVED Orca Bay! I was brand new to quilting and didn't know that I shouldn't jump head first but was supposed to go slowly and learn techniques first! Or so a quilt shop owner told me. My piecing was not so great in the beginning but improved so much during the construction of that quilt. Plus, it is still the best motivation for me. After Orca Bay, I didn't slow down! I skipped last year because I thought I didn't have time. I am STILL going through withdrawals! I have my fabrics and am ready to roll this year. I would love to have a copy of this magazine. It is one of the few that I have not gotten yet. I guess I think that if I get it, I will be hooked!

Thanks for all you do, Bonnie! I've learned so much from you over the past couple of years!

Another great block from you. I can't wait to turn it into my next leader/ender project. One of my favorite Bonnie Hunter quilts is my Smith Mountain Morning. It's the one I took your class for. It was great meeting you and getting a closer glimpse of your scrappy ways. Thanks for all you do.

I am new to your blog and love your designs and innovative thoughts. To be quite honest, my favorite part of the quilting process is the actual quilting. Piecing can be frustrating for me at times, but by the time the top is made and the quilt sandwiched and I can sit in front of my machine and guide the fabric and listen to the hum of my machine, I am SO relaxed. One of these days, I'm going to do a whole cloth quilt. Until then, I'm just practicing. :-) Utahoosier@yahoo.com

Hi Bonnie, I'm currently working on Smith Mountain Morning and Jamestown Landing. I've made so many of your quilts I can't choose a favorite. I guess I would have to say Carolina Christmas. it was the first "Bonnie Quilt" I ever made.

I'm a fairly new follower, having been tipped off by a fellow writer on FanStory.com, whose wife follows you faithfully and highly recommended your page through him to me. Hi, Bonnie! I love your patterns. The quilts go together so well. I have completed Red Ridge Beauty (mine was red and creams so can't call it Blue) and Orca Bay. I hope to complete the tops of Rick Rack Nine Patch and Sister's Nine Patch before the end of the month. All the blocks are made - just need to cut out the setting squares. I have the center of the summer sew along for the Split Nine Patch done and need to add the first border and make the second. I'm so deep in scrappy quilts and such a fan!

My first Bonnie Hunter original I made was Easy Street...then I got your Scraps & ShirtTales Book and I am challenging myself to make each one. I have Denim Rails, Virginia Bound & Cactus Punch tops done and just started cutting pieces for Star Gazing. I love the fact that your teaching me how to recycle clothes for fabric..yes its nice that I can spend $12+ a yard for fabric...but I can also make some really pretty quilts out of clothes that my kids wore. =) The BIGGEST lesson I'm learning is color value too..I can sort clothes like nobodies business. 6 kids = mountainous piles..but picking quilt fabrics make me nervous sometimes. I'm learning to just cut & sew it together... Working through my stash and I am LOVING it! thanks Bonnie! rkwhetzel@gmail.com

Thank you for the chance to win the new book. I love your block pattern and hope to use it in a quilt some day. At the present all my half square triangles are destined for the leader-ender challenge.
You have certainly caught my attention with your scrap quilts; using leftovers from dressmaking is what drew me to quilting in the first place and I love how all the little pieces come together.

I love your quilts! They are all so doable. Finishing up some other projectsand then I'll be ready to start a new one. Love what I have seen in previous copies of 100 blocks. Have tried to find copies to purchase. Would love a copy of Quiltmaker’s 100 blocks, vol 8 so I can use or inspiration. Makes it so much more special when I know someone who has blocks in there! :-) Thanks.
