Van Full Of Quilters!

Mornings are meant for being outside -

That is for those who are willing and able to leave their sewing machines and projects for just an hour or so - and do something that is good for body, mind and soul -

Saturday's walk up Bear Branch road provided us with a glimpse of mid summer -

Different things are blooming in mid-July, and we were out to beat the heat.

Creeks burbled on by.

Saturday was brought to us by the color purple!

And periwinkle! My favorite.

Chicory is putting on quite a show along the roadsides and ditches. I love this color so much.

Along fence lines -

This color.  It's everything!

So peaceful and serene.

Just gotta love a long and winding dirt road in the middle of nowhere.  I'd rather be here than any city.

Sunlight and reflections.

And a bit of Tula during Saturday's lunch on the porch.

All gathered together, enjoying the day.

Sunday's hike up to Grayson Highlands proved to be pony-less.

This time of year they are often up at higher elevations in search of shade.

My own theory is that when summers get busier with tourists and hikers, that the ponies simply say "enough!" and they go further afield.  I don't blame them.

We had a great hike, regardless!

There was one lone rhodie bush barely blooming.

Yep - about done for the season.

At hour half-way rest stop!

It was a gorgeous blue sky morning!

We were back at hte inn by 11:30am with still a whole day of sewing ahead of us.

Projects on design walls -

Check out the Alice in Wonderland tea pots!

Sampler blocks in soft colors -

There's been a whole lot of bag making going on!

More here, along with some doll clothes -

Medium sized Mondo bag -

Shop License plates becoming a quilt!

Autumn right around the corner?

Say it isn't so!

Elephant under construction over here!

We wound up our weekend with a relaxing fire pit last evening. The weather was grand, and I love winding down of a busy weekend into just sitting and talking - with some s'more making on the side for those so inclined.

Yes, both Zoey and Mabel are ther with us - and if you look at the far right you'll see a curious Tula Tallulah Lou on the walkway.

As the daylight departed and darkness began to take over, there were abundant fireflies in the woods just beyond the grass.  They twinkled to perfection.

What a great end to a busy weekend!

And in the studio? (As if this post isn't long enough already?)  This is going on:

This is underway.

It's 109'' X 116''.  It's huge.

I ended up piecing a backing in tans and taupes - going out to buy 15 yards of one thing? I looked at what is available around me and no one had that volume - it would take 2 matching bolts.

All of my mom's neutrals are thrifted, gifted and gleaned. There are shirts and scraps and other things that came her way that she worked in, so having ONE thing as the backing just didn't seem to fit the style of the quilt either, so I pulled together yardage I had that would work within the beige/tan/taupe colorway.

And I'll share more through the coming week.

And that takes me to the present.  How was your weekend?

Quiltville Quote of the Day -

Grow!

Even if it makes others feel uncomfortable.

Happy Monday, everyone!

Good to see Tula is finally content and happy. I know she’s getting a lot of love from the retreaters, but wasn’t there another cat that came up fairly recently? Is he still hanging around? It’s sad to see so many strays. Hopefully he finds a good home like Tula. Have a great day

Your mom's quilt is gorgeous! How are you going to finish the edges, though?

I spent a good part of my weekend putting away fabric donated to our church quilting group. We had barely started to sort through the donation when we found out we had to move from one space to another in the church, so last Monday we moved everything to tables in the new room, Thursday fewer people showed up and we put about 2/3 of it away. Much of what was left had never been sorted, so I did some of that on Friday, 6 hours of it on Saturday, a tiny bit (while showing off the new space!) after church and now headed back this morning to finish up.

Love, love, love your mom's quilt! What a celebration of her life and certainly to be cherished for generations to come. Hope the quilting goes as planned.

What a beautiful post!
I had a productive weekend for sure. I sewed all 36 block A for I indigo Way. Today I will load my Bristol quilt top onto the long arm. Try to get to sewing block B too. Suppose I have to cook something for the guys too.
Have a Sparkling good day 💞
Blessings 🙏

Your weekend sounds like great fun. I spent mine celebrating my dad's 97th birthday with lots of family and friends. No quilting tho, but maybe today!

I use sheets for backings. Usually from thrift stores. If the top fabric is thrifted it is no different. Beverly

How much does a hexie quilt that large weigh before adding batting, backing, and quilting thread?

Three thoughts from today's post: 1) I am going out on a limb and predicting use of the color periwinkle (it's such a fun word to say!) in this year's Mystery Quilt. 2) I think it's wonderful that Dave attends/supervises/"fire marshals" the Sunday night bonfire with the ladies! 3) Your video of your momma's ginormous hexie quilt brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful passion and project to share with your momma! That's all I have. :)

I love the Hexies sewn in words!! So glad you found enough in your Stash for a backing. Perfect! I miss seeing the fireflies. Don't miss the Midwest Humidity.

Tula is an interesting cat- no petting for her! But this life seems to suit her. Your mom did a fabulous job on that quilt and she can be proud she finished it. What an heirloom!
