Quiltvillians Around the Porch!

This is the sight I love to see!

So many gorgeous quilts hung over the side porch rain at Quiltville Inn!

Covid brought us many challenges - but the one thing I love from this whole experience was having everyone bring their own quilts to sleep under to help with my need to wash and sanitize all bedding (including my own quilts if they were in use) with each group.

Folks LOVE bringing their own comfy quilts to sleep with, and then we get the benefit of a virtual quilt show with each new group that comes!

Catching a bit of a breeze!

What quilts do you recognize?

I made a slow shift down the porch to get close ups!

I Spy On Ringo Lake Frolic and Pine Tree Point! And yes, the quilt at the far right is On Ringo Lake too!  Look how different things can appear with a diagonal set vs a strait set and a color change!

The center flying geese design is not one of mine - so I don't have that information, but it is wonderful!

Glimpses of Allietare, Appalachian Autumn, Frolic  and our Unity quilt

Xenia's Orca Bay from String Fling!

And the Midnight Flight top she finished on retreat!

A full shot of Appalachian Autumn!  So much fun to see!

All three Unity quilts over the rail!

It was just a fantastic array - and I'm sure the passing cars, trucks and motorcycles enjoyed the show, too!

Yesterday was a crazy busy round of goodbye hugs and laundry, and a mid-morning drop off of Zoey to the vet for her first teeth cleaning experience.

The vet is 1/2 hour drive away - so by the time I got back, most everyone had departed, a "clean the fridge" brunch was enjoyed by the few of us left, and pretty soon the house was totally quiet as I began to get thigs ready for the next group who arrive TONIGHT!

Poor girl was just a bit woozy when I picked her up!

She was pretty silly towards evening time as well!

And this is where I had a little accident of my own.  I was coming down the stairs from the loft (wood stairs) in bare feet to fix her some bland food as she was having a bit of tummy trouble.

I don't even know how it happened, but without warning I was falling down the stairs - not just one bump, but several as I careened on down.

My tailbone and backside took the brunt of it.  I didn't just land, I continued to slide to the bottom. And yes, my right hand was on the bannister.  That doesn't help when your feet come out from under you.

In an effort to stop myself, my left hand was along the wall - I've got a friction burn that took off quite a bit of skin below my pinky finger, and my thumb hyperextended in my fall, so I'm babying the pad of my thumb right now until it heals.

It's all muscular and bruising - nothing is broken but my pride, but I am moving very slow today and it is hard to sit down comfortably at all.

My right shin was stopped by the newel post at the bottom,  So the limpy bits are right shin, tailbone, badly bruised backside, and left opposable thumb.  Let's just say that NOTHING is comfortable right now, and the only comfortable position for sleeping was on my side.

I'm glad I've got Susan to help me make up 12 beds today - you never realize how much you use your thumb until you can't!

This also brought around another decision - as much as I love wood stairs, they aren't safe without some kind of grippy tread on them.  Especially as we age.

We've ordered some and will install them at the cabin to see how we like them, and then even though it is not in keeping with the period of the house, we will be installing them on both sets of wood stairs at Quiltville Inn, because I don't want any barefoot or sock clad retreaters taking a tumble down the stairs either.

I'm bruised, I'm sore, but I'm whole and things will get better day by day.

And the fun continues!

Today's stop on Pat Sloan's Holiday Celebrations book tour - Bev McCullough of Flamingo ToesDon't forget to sign up for her Gift-Away while there!

She also made her own version of Merry Little Houses, a completely different take!

I've loved visiting the other stops along this tour since it began with the TWO mega-giveaways from Martingale happening now (see the prize packs on my May 31st POST. You can enter on their blog here, and over on Instagram here.) and seeing what everyone has been making from Holiday Celebrations.

Don't forget to enter for my own gift-away on Pat Sloan's Holiday Celebrations Tour. Did you get your entry in on that post yet for my gift-away?  Be sure to hit up all of the stops along the way!

Quiltville Quote of the Day -
Disappearing nine patch quilt top made by my friend Mona.

I try to keep this in mind when going through stressful stretches in my life as in too many deadlines appearing at once.
It's not always easy, but it's important to hold onto that inner peace.
Petting fabric also works! ⁣

Happy Wednesday!

Falling is not fun, glad there are no broken bones!! Zoey looks so comical zoned out, she is a dear and I love your posts on her. PS, you can slip on carpeted stair also. I took a tumble going down ours with a load for the basement fridge. Stiff and sore for a few days. Stay safe.

So sorry to hear about your fall. Take care.

Sorry to hear about your tumble, Bonnie! Prayers for quick and successful healing.

Oh Bonnie, I hope you heal quickly. I understand... I have Osteoporosis and at almost 68, my doctor keeps reminding me, no walking around on just socks. ( I prefer bare feet, but didn't tell her) Baby yourself, don't overdo it today.

Hope your brusing and aches go away quickly. Just a note about stair grips. After my many years of interior design experience. There is good and bad out there. Some were more slippery than without them.

Ouch! I’m so sorry you took such a tumble! Hope the soreness goes away quickly. The new group of retreaters will help. Loved seeing all the quilts in this post.

Oh, goodness! Here's hoping the aches and pains from that fall heal quickly, Bonnie. Good plan, adding non-slip treads to those stairs!

I am so glad you didn't break anything but of course that doesn't mean you aren't hurting! When we removed carpeting and replaced it with hardwood we carpeted the stairs. There are many beautiful options available and it is so much better to be safe. (We are in the over 70 age group.) Heal quickly!

Oh, OUCH! So glad nothing is broken. Take it easy as much as you’re able to. Love seeing all the quilts from the retreat eras. Eye candy!

Wow--your fall (glad you didn't break anything) was a wake-up call to me. I'm in the process of ripping the (disgusting) carpet off my stairs in my Wee Condo in preparation for painting them white. Now I'm wondering if this is a good idea since I'm 70. I'll be watching for a picture and report on the treads. Oddly enough I remember my grandparents 1910 home in inner city Harrisburg, PA having some sort of rubbery treads on the steps.

We put at stair runner (carpet just on the center) on our wooden steps so the dog could safely get up and down. Hope you heal quickly!

I keep Arnica for bruises and such. It really helps to speed the healing of them. Also, I LOVE the idea of retreaters bringing their own quilts to sleep under. More love to show to others. Take it easy, Bonnie.

Derrith said...

Ouch! Sorry about your fall down the stairs.

Maybe consider continuing to encourage retreaters to bring their own quilts to sleep under - for the fun of seeing each others quilts and the over the porch rail quilt show! I have really enjoyed watching those impromptu quilt shows!

Joyce Lester said...

With a fall like that you really should visit your chiropractor. Especially since the tail and back took the brunt. I'm pretty sure the arm that had the death grip on the rail needs adjusting too. Use plenty of ice! Hope you feel better soon.

sue s said...

Jo, we did the same thing for the same reason! And you can still see the wood on the stairs.

Tracey Honig said...

OH MY!! An eventful day for sure. I am so glad to hear that you didn't break anything, but sometimes the soreness hurts worse. Thank goodness you have the extra help! Maybe a little loving from Miss Zoey will make you both feel better!
Loving the quilt shows! Yes, it is always interesting to see the same pattern being done by different people and their interpretations!

Kristy said...

So glad you didn't break anything! I have so enjoyed looking at each retreat group's quilts on the porch. What fun to see the quilts I have made from your patterns made by others and know they are being used at your retreat house. It only makes me want to be there! I wish I lived closer! California is a long way away from you! So glad you share all about what is going on in your life. You are very special to us Bonnie! Take care and do your best to get some rest today even though I know it is a change-over day. :-) K- lkw2x6-apq@yahoo.com

I'm so glad nothing was broken! Hope Miss Zoey is felling better this morning! Would your wonderful sewing "gel cushion" help with making you more comfortable? Please take good care of yourself!

So sorry to hear about your fall! Thank goodness you fell on your bottom and not face first. It could have been a lot worse. Feel better soon. Give yourself time to heal.

Oh Bonnie, I'm so sorry about your fall. That is my biggest fear..the stairs.
I love seeing the quilt shows every week. They are all gorgeous!

I agree! Lesson learned the hard way.

Hang in there, Bonnie, heal quickly! Thanks so much for sharing those wonderful quilt photos. I'm so excited about the chance to visit the Inn and see some people's quilts in person, but I won't be bringing any of my own since I have to fly to get there. Take care, everyone!

Bridget said...

Love the idea of bringing your own quilt for your bed (or to trade with another retreater?) But how about hanging a couple of yours for the duration? well, change them out but you know...how fun would that be????? Bonnie's eye candy!

Ellie said...

So sorry about your slip on the stairs & hope you recover soon. Sad for you it happened on such a busy day at the Inn. As a retreater, it gets real busy during the transition & too bad you have a short window to get ready before your next group arrives. Wishing you better days ahead🙃🌞

Oh dear Bonnie! So sorry, praying for your speedy healing. Falls are no fun. I had one back in Feb during our ice and snow. I'm broke... surgery was scheduled and then cancelled... LOOOOONG story. So I just do the best I can. <3 that virtual quilt show over the rail. Made my morning. Thank you so much!

Hurrying to get down to Thanksgiving dinner at son's family gathering of 25, I bumped down EVERY stair. Bruised and embarrassed, my Grandson stopped the gasping crowd with "You sure know how to make an entrance, Grandma!" Thank Goodness it wasn't head-first and the black and blue finally went away. Rest and heal quickly, sending hugs.

Debbie said...

I once fell down the stairs---in much the same position as you did---wearing sandals on carpeted stairs. Holding a baby in my arm. Baby went flying over the bannister and landed on his back in shag carpeting. Unhurt. So it's not just bare feet. The sandals had a rubber sole that had gotten slick. I might have been better off in bare feet. There's just so many ways to fall down the stairs! Now I watch where I'm going more carefully.
Hope your injuries heal quickly!

Oh dear, Bonnie! Falling is NO Fun! My children threaten to move me out of my Grandma House if I fall again. Take good care. I loved the Virtual Porch Quilt Show. Saw a few stacks at an antique store off I-80 today on our way home from Greenwood. SO many, I almost bought one!

I managed to break both ankles on Mother's Day weekend a few years ago taking a tumble down 4 stairs. I was carrying a bit of laundry and thought there were only 3 steps to go BUT there were 4 and when I stepped out on the level I caught the last tread. One ankle went left and as I tried to catch my balance, the other ankle went the other way. You never know how much your husband loves you until you're in a wheelchair for 5 weeks. I never missed a day of work and was very tired of take out food but I did develop a keen awareness of how life is for those living in a wheel chair. I'm so glad you do not have any broken bones. The treads on the stairs sounds like a wonderful idea. Feel better soon.

I'm sure you already know this but what physical therapy did for my bruised tailbone when I rolled out of bed onto a hardwood floor. Heal quickly.

So sorry about your fall and glad nothing "broke". I absolutely love the "quilts on the porch rail" show from each group of retreaters. What a gorgeous location for the show. And so much inspiration, variety, and beauty. Take it easy, heal quick - maybe you and Zoey can recoup together.

Baby yourself. A bruised tailbone takes a while to really feel better. Try sitting on a squishy ice pack. Hope you feel better soon.

Praying for a quick recovery for you. I love each and everyone of the quilts they are so beautiful!

I'm glad you're OK. In our timeshare cottage the stairs have been painted with something that feels like sandpaper, but it didn't help the one time I fell going up the stairs...

Sorry to hear about your fall. I had the same experience on my wooden stairs and carpet the center to avoid any more problems. No problems since then.

I'm so sorry you took a tumble!! Rest up and know that your retreaters will understand if you have to take it easy. Hope you feel better soon. Thanks for another wonderful retreat.

OMG! so scary!. I agree with you about slippery wooden stairs. I slipped on some at my friends cabin and banged my funny bone. Not so funny! i almost passed out. Take care of your boo boos. Thank goodness nothing was broken! Love todays quote - those are words to live by.

That fall could have been disastrous, so the "period of the house" can take a hike! Thanking Gaia you are still here to post. Just let your posse take care of 'physical' things. Your job is to heal now. (And enjoy quilts on the porch rail.)

i am reading from you from France. Si votre coccyx est douloureux, il faut essayer de vous asseoir sur une bouée !!! oui oui it is not a joke you know. Le trou dans la bouée permet au coccyx de ne pas soutenir votre poids. Belle journée. domi

Been there done that Bonnie. Down wooden steps from balcony to patio. Steps were a bit wet. My rear end and one side of me would have passed for a new multicolour batik. Odd bits of me damaged as I hit the concrete patio. Not funny. Steps now have non slip strips a cross them, and the blend in well. Also the work, I tried a repeat performance recently, but it didn't works, as strips help me. Wish you well Bonnie, withe be with you every ouch of the way.

I broke my tailbone in junior high doing something teenage stupid. To this day I can tell when a storm is coming better than any weatherperson. BTW does Zoey know how famous she is or does she just take it in stride?!! Can't wait to meet both of you next month.

Thanks for taking the time to share another day of your quilty life, Bonnie! Even though you've had a big tumble, your love of quilts and your dear Zoey shines through. I love seeing the quilts you've shared, and I hope to make your Unity quilt one day. I'm working on my "Alaska" quilt again today which I'm creating in aqua and salmon colors. It brings a smile to work with these colors. Hope you're feeling better soon! Kari O'Connor

Sorry to hear about your tumble and glad you survived without emergency medical help. Years ago my dad decided to carpet our stairs after he had a similar trip on bare wood.

I do understand the thumb issue. Now just imagine not being able to use either thumb at the same time... You can't open or close either a button or zipper; door knobs become a challenge and soo many other things. And I do speak from personal experience - nasty burns on both so it was a matter of weeks. Nothing I want to relive.

Just catching up---a fall! Oh, my...these are a real scary---and blow to the pride. Just recently, I mis-stepped on a stair at our local Y. I am there, and using those stairs 5-6 times a week...down I went...bruises everywhere...and thankful another Y member was there to help me get back up--it happened so fast! I had on my good sneakers, and like every other morning, I was feeling fine, and then---bam! This is when I start to feel a 'certain' age---is this an isolated thing? Who knows, but stair treads sound like a great idea...you didn't break anything, and neither did I---but making changes will help assure it doesn't happen again...Glad you're feeling a bit better...bruises heal! Enjoy your quilter's...! Bev
