Playing with Jacks in Springfield, MO!

20150924_141852
Another day to play with the Ozark Piecemakers Quilt Guild in Springfield, Missouri!

I’m so happy they chose these two workshops – there are SO MANY possibilities just by rotating units and changing the value placement, swapping backgrounds – the varieties are endless!

We started out the day with a bit of Easy Angle Ruler practice—making triangles in matching sets of 6, testing our seams.

Contrasting chains of squares were added to the triangles to quickly create our little gems, each quilter working with their own fabrics in their own color ways to bring about their own visions.

After my lecture on Thursday, Susan brought in some fabrics she thought she wanted to use for her blocks and we discussed them a bit.

I asked her where she felt she was BEFORE hearing my lecture, and she laid out these fabrics:

Okay, pretty good…but a bit tame!

We talked a bit more about variety and pushing the boundaries within each color family, even the neutrals –and she moved THIS pile over into the YES column:

Okay!  Looking better!

It looks warmer, it has more depth, the background is no longer so flat and predictable.  And then we talked about getting away from the whole “only a tone on tone" thing and things went from better to BEST!”

Now I’m feeling the love!

The first two columns are a great start, but they are very similar to each other, and they are only tone on tones with zero surprises…the 3rd stack --- now THIS brings in the HAPPY!!

We agreed that some happy peppy neutrals that have a bit more color and action to them, still with a neutral background are what this quilt needs to branch her out from safe and predictable to YEAH, BABY!!

All of Susan’s Squares!

I thought this was a neat idea….Susan is a retired kindergarten teacher and used some small paper flash cards to separate her sets of cut pieces so she can easily flip through them to find the set she wants to go with her red/neutral triangles.  Papers are easily reused again and again for future projects.

Notes can be written on them if need be.  I thought this was a great way to keep her pieces sorted and contained at the same time.

Hello Bonnie.
I had realized that i still wasn't getting the "scrappy thing" and was overwhelmed by my stash - possibly because i wanted to "plan" the look of the quilt too much-just like every other pattern. So i wasn't getting the subtle mix of color. This example of how to transition into "scrappiness" has made the difference in helping this old brain get it. The light bulb finally went on. Thank you so much for all you do to enrich the quilting experience.

Yes, thank you Bonnie. I spent part of the week cutting fabric into 1.5" strips. Now I am working on a pumpkin wall hanging using scraps and the strips for the ribbon border. So much fun!

Bonnie, so glad you got to commune with nature while here in the Ozarks. I'm looking forward to sewing some more on my orange and black Playing with Jacks blocks.
