Things Round Here ----

I’m down in the basement working on tomorrow’s mystery clue when I get called up stairs  ----

“There’s something you’d be interested in seeing on the Discovery Channel -"

Okay.  I’ll bite…What’s it about?

AMISH MAFIA!

Just when I thought that I’d seen it all with Duck Dynasty – now the DH is engrossed in Amish Mafia.

I laughed my way through the whole thing.  I said it had to be fake…

But I did a search online and came up with this article in the Lancaster Online:

The debut episode introduces a group of characters more like the cast of "The Sopranos" than a traditional Amish community.
Under the leadership of "Lebanon Levi," the group allegedly keeps peace in the Amish community, without calling in police or outside authority.
There is booze, drugs, violence and sex. And even a mission to thwart the import of "fake, Chinese Amish furniture."
Steven Breit, a local attorney who the show touts as an Amish liaison, doesn't doubt the show's basis.
"The story lines, they're real. The events, in my opinion, were accurate," he said before court Thursday morning. "Certainly, the acts have been re-enacted."
(Discovery included a written disclaimer that some events in the show were dramatized.)
But that didn't make it any less enticing to many viewers.
Swanson said he'll "definitely" watch the second episode.  And he's not alone, according to a quick survey.
Kevin Warner, of Mountville, will "absolutely" watch, saying he found the debut entertaining and informative.  "Some of the situations are things you hear about in the news or through gossip of others," Warner said.
"Part fascinated. Part disturbed," said another viewer.
"Oh yeah! Had to laugh a couple times," another said.

I had to STOP watching it – I’ve gotta finish writing Part 4 of Easy Street!

Have a good night, everyone!

My husband hooked on watching that show last night as well. After I saw Honey Boo Boo, I'm convinced that there is an audience for anything the TV moguls can think of... and the more outrageous, the more people watch.

I watched part of it the other night...made me laugh! Wonder if they'll show any mafia amish quilters....hehe

The sad part of it all. Some people actually believe this stuff to be the rule rather than the exception.

Amish wear a distinctive beard with no mustache, and a bowl type hair cut.

We are all looking forward to the next clue.....let's use some green!!

They can't be real Amish - no beards!

I saw something about this last night...maybe on entertainment tonight or one of those. Believe I heard that Lebanon wasn't baptized so he feels like he is free from the constants of Amish life and can carry arms etc and perform his protection activities. I wasn't drawn to watch it.

Bonnie STEP away from the reality TV, it will suck you into their realm. Playing with fabric is our reality!! Remember we are one trip to Maryjo's away from being on Hoarders!! I still can't believe you didn't stop on your Ikea trip, there was room, fabric fits in the cracks and can cushion your other packages.

I couldn't help laugh when I read this. Amish Mafia......Really? I always thought the true Amish did not allow close up photographs let alone a camera crew following them. Maybe I should get a reality show; The Cutters and Rippers or Rotary Cutter Warriors. At least then I could get a per episode check to buy more fabric with.

Haha. You could be on to something there. I like "Cutters and Rippers." Sounds like it would be more violent than our reality usually is, so it might pull in an audience. I've been stabbing myself with pins a lot lately. Maybe that could be an episode. :)

Last summer there was a feud with some of the Ohio Amish. One group broke into others homes and cut off their hair and beards!

that is unbelievable ! LOL

I think they don't have to grow a beard until they're married. Are the guys on the show single?

Just how "Amish" is a man holding a shotgun!??

I think your idea has legs. Bonnie, maybe there is a network or cable TV contract in your future.

Good grief, Charlie Brown. And that is all I have to say on this topic.

Growing up I idealized the Amish lifestyle, but now know the Amish/Mennonites have the same problems as any other society- physical abuse, drugs, alcohol, crime, incest, etc. I have a family member who joined the Mennonites in PA, so I won't be watching Amish Mafia. I have issues with the Amish selling Hmong quilting as "locally made" or blatantly "Amish" work in Lancaster. Did try an episode of Duck Dynasty, but picked the wrong one. The Christmas episode was clearly tongue in cheek, but the children's Christmas party was over the line for me. No reason to destroy their holiday party for ratings. Guess I'll stick to my reality of trying to clean the sewing room so I can make stockings! I'm saving the steps for Easy Street for next summer's vacation in the Adirondacks.

It has been Friday for almost 20 minutes. Where's our clue? ;-)

Oh. My. Goodness. Remember when Discovery Network had science shows and TLC stood for The Learning Channel? I guess this explains why I watch a lot of automotive programs on Velocity network - doesn't make it any less pitiful, but explains it!

I never watch more than an hour a day of television and that's when I spend time in the living room with my husband. I'm waiting impatiently for the next season of "Downton Abbey" in January, my only true must-watch television program.

It's not Friday here yet! LOL! I'm gonna check back at midnight though just to see and then decide if I can stay up for another hour and at least get it cut. :D

Reality t.v. has nothing to do with being "real"!! And, dramatization (in their world) is a license to lie. I am shocked that Discovery Channel & TLC would waste their programming hours on this kind of programming! I will not be watching.

gmp said...

I just saw a commercial for a new reality show - Lifetime Channel - Double Diva's....apparently it is a show about two woman who are bra experts, and they fit women with the proper garments!

I live 30 minutes from Shipshewana and the Amish community is not exempt from suffering the same social problems as anyone else.
They deal with it in their own way. I think creating a reality series on it though is unacceptable and I am sure it will be laced with many inaccuracies. So sad! I would rather listen to music and stitch away.

Wait until he finds Honey-Boo-Boo....

I think your right Cathy.

I guess anything is possible. Near my hometown.is jamespot, Missouri and it has one of the strictest Amish communities around. They built their own school to keep their children from being influenced by the outsiders. I always love to go back to visit when I can. The boys/men don't have beards until they're married if I remember right. My iPads not letting me go back without erasing everything but it's Jamesport not spot. :0)
I won't be watching much of the Amish Mafia.but did make laugh a few times. Oh well someone must like
