Rhymes & Reasons --

lagunacliffs2

This Traveling Quilter thing is so weird and sometimes I have to make decisions that impact other people.

But this blog belongs to me, I lay it out the way I want, I write the content that I want, I choose the background that I want --- It is mine.

In the last few months I've been questioned by people who are "upset" or “disappointed” that they are not in my blog links anymore, or people asking if I would PUT them in my side bar to drive up their traffic. And then if I remove them ---they get upset.

My links in my own side bar were put there for my own use, and ease of finding who I was reading.  They have always rotated --- nothing stays the same.

If someone up the street painted their house blue and you didn’t like it --- would you send them an email, or write in a public forum demanding they “PUT IT BACK!” the way it was?  I’m amazed at what some people will send out by email.

Just because we have the freedom TO say it --- does that mean we SHOULD send it?

I once got a complaint from a reader who was upset that my feed in google reader was a partial feed ---and she said she wanted me to put it back, explaining to me in kindergarten terms so I would understand – how to reset it.  Turns out she was following 200 quilt blogs and wanted them ALL in full format in google reader so that she didn’t have to click a link to open a new window.

200 quilt blogs --- who has time to quilt if you are reading 200 quilt blogs daily in full format?  This is all fine for her, but what is not fine is telling ME what I should do with my own blog feed.

Who I follow is my business.  Being included in my side bar, added or removed from my side bar does not mean that I don’t like you, or like someone better. Since yesterday I’ve gotten emails DEMANDING that I put things back “THE WAY THEY WERE”.

It's WEIRD!!  And creepy ---and so I made a decision to put all the people that I follow into my personal google reader and not have a "daily reads" section anymore. I can’t add EVERYONE, and I don’t like hurting people if I remove someone.

It is unreasonable for me to be the keeper of your bookmarks. That isn’t a job I signed up for.  Things change. Please be responsible for your own bookmarks.  It is better that way.

I have a lady who just un-enrolled from a class I am teaching in Florida because I couldn't give her the count number of pieces for each shape and which accuquilt die she needed to cut them. I told her that was not the focus of the class, that she was to come to class with 2.5" strips, and the rulers ---- and she lambasted me and said she is no longer a fan because I wouldn't give her what she wanted when she wanted it -- (I don't have that info for the quilt with me in my head?...I"m in California and was replying to her as quickly as I could by cell phone during class-- HELLO!??)

So that's what's going on here.If I decide to clean house and rearrange my blog, it’s for my own reasons.  If you didn’t bookmark things for yourself – I can’t be responsible for that. I need less stress not more. If there is someone you are looking for – google them. They are easy to find.

The only thing keeping me calm is being far enough away ---- and experiencing such beauty as this, walking Laguna Beach at Sunset ----

Dear Bonnie - the lady who unenrolled from your class deserves a big salute from whoever got to take her place. Her hissy fit allowed a grown up to slide into the class! Aren't you glad?

The selfishness of individuals in our society is amazing. We are given the chance to enjoy the talents of others, the time of thers, the generosity of others and yet it is not good enough. Anyone of us that live in the public realm (quilter, teacher, police office, etc) must constantly deal with this. It is sad, and I often wonder if the person realizes what they said and/or did when they have had the chance to look back.... hindsight is 20/20 after all.

Bonnie, you have nothing to apologize for, and you should be able to present your blog the way YOU wish.

I, for one, am grateful for your generosity and your influence in my life. You helped me to grow 'outside' the pattern box.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone could play as nicely together as all of the scraps in our quilts?

Love you girlfriend!!!

Nancy

Bonnie, Thank you for how you give of yourself and of your talents. You share your ideas and knowledge freely. You have changed how I quilt and I have learned much from you. Thank you for all you do! Nyla-Jean, Kingston, Ontario

Bonnie, the good thing about the internet and comments and emails, is that you can just delete and forget about them. You are way too generous as it is. Don't let the few oddballs upset you. They are not true quilters! I love what you do and always enjoy reading your blog. Keep it real and do it your way! xxx

I would like to second Patchwork Penguin. She said it far better than I could. I love your blog and you have given me courage to try things on my own. Thanks. I wish more people would follow their own path and not care.

Wow!!! Kinda makes me hope my own little blog does not grow too much ;-) I'm sorry you have to deal with such stupid stuff Bonnie! But I love that you stand up for yourself and refuse to "let the turkeys get you down" - you go girl!!! We'll be your cheering section! It's time for people to put on their big-girl panties and stop depending on others to take them where they want to go!

Wow - I am continually shocked about what people think and say. You are so generous with your time, and I would suspect that 99.9% of us appreciate it! Enjoy the sunshine!

I am so thankful for your generous spirit. You share so much of your quilting and personal life that I feel like you are a friend (even though you don't know me). To complain about sidebar items and accuquilt instructions is beyond ridiculous (not to mention skipping the whole common decency of humanity thing!). Keep enjoying that sun and sand (we're in the midst of a blizzard, lol!) and keep doing things to make yourself happy!

Bonnie...when I got home from your AMAZING class yesterday I told my husband about the complaining lady because it annoyed me...he agreed your class will be much better without her attending. Love google reader and Pinterest but the Internet can impact your quilting time.....
Well I'm now logging off to go assemble all four sections of the Bargello I sewers like crazy when I got home last night. Enjoy the drizzly Sunday here in SouthernCalifornia

OH BONNIE - please do not let disgruntled folks disturb you in the least. I personally find your blog delightful, and so crammed with wonderful ideas - I come back several times a day.

It is YOUR blog. You take YOUR time to share with us your ideas, lessons etc. Who can possibily ask for more. Besides that, you are a down to earth direct lady. Nothing over of the top about you. That is why we all come to visit.

I will take full responsibilty for this statement: Anyone who keeps up with 200 blogs needs to get offline and start living a LIFE! If anyone does not ike you set up on the blog etc, let them start a perfect blog of their own... period.

Keep your chin up, smile on that fair face and enjoy what you do. YOU ARE GOOD AT IT.

Bonnie - you already work your patootie off for your fans - you do not need to hold our hands for every little thing. THANK YOU for all that you do - most recently I appreciate your gift of Orca Bay which I am enlarging to queen size and do not expect you to do the calculations for me.... PAHLEEEZE PEOPLE! It's a lovely day - go enjoy, girl!

Good for you! More people need to learn about sharing (kindergarten skill).

Keep up the great work! I love reading your blog.

You go, girl. I read your blog because you are true to yourself. If I wanted life to be perfectly cut like on an accuquilt, I would be sure to buy the "Don't Go" model. As it is, I'm doing well with my Easy Angle and my Companion Angle, and I'm doing quite fine with you, thank you!

It never ceases to amaze me how inconsiderate and thoughtless people can be. I'm hoping it was only an oversight and that they really meant no harm because I WANT to believe that people are good and mean well. You are right, it is your blog and you should do with it as you wish. You are more than generous with your talent and time and I'm thinking the majority of us appreciate all that you do. I know that I do!

Bonnie I am amazed at the pure cheek and greed of people, not all people but what appears to be a growing number of people who think their demands should be met. Of course this blog is yours to do with as you choose and I for one enjoy visiting - popping in and out of your tabs and getting inspired by ideas I hadn't thought of.
Continue to be you don't let small minded people with big ego's drag you down! Let them go I'm sure there are nicer people that will fill the spaces left behind.
cyber hugs to you, Miche'le xx

Bonnie,
Your post reminded me of something that cracked me up in grad school. Our professor was lamenting about "disgruntled" students. "What about the 'gruntled' one? No one talks about them!"
As a 'gruntled' reader, I am applauding your decision. Keep your blog what you want it to be. It IS your blog and we read it for that reason.
Loved your lecture in Chula Vista. It wasn't the first time I'd heard it and I enjoyed it as much the second time as the first! Thanks for all you give.

This is just to let you know that there are people who really appreciate your talent and willingness to give. Just to let you know I am almost finished making your "Story Time Stars" from my scraps. It is a beauty!!! Thanks for making it available. Miriam in West Texas (the one who bought your vintage blocks).

It isn't just you, Bonnie--my son was talking yesterday about complaints on a gaming forum about a free expansion and update--it didn't give some people everything they wanted and some had problems with it that someone else should solve now!!! I wish you had some kind of a filter so that you didn't have to read the bad comments. I noticed with my husband's student comments when he was still teaching that a hundred positives were canceled out by one negative comment, and that was the one he remembered. (My personal favorite was "Dr. ----'s class is death.") Let it go, and enjoy the good words that come your way!

Love your blog

The quilter who quit was a twit.

That said I do use the "GO" / accucut because of disabilities... loss of strength in my hands and arms... but I am smart enough to know I can cut enough to get me through a class the regular way then cut the rest at home with measurements from patches from the class.

Love your blog
Love a lot of what you say...about life, quilting

Keep up the good read..

Bonnie, Your right to speak up, and speak your position! Too many people want the leaders to hold their hand, and coddle them along. They need to be responsible for themselves, the things they do, and who they associate themselves with. There are a lot of teachers out there that love to hold peoples hand and babysit their students. I much more appreciate an instructor who will inspire me and be a launching pad for my own creativity ---AND BONNIE YOUR ARE THAT KIND OF TEACHER FOR ME -AND MOST OF YOUR READERS. We get it!! ONWARD YOU BRAVE TEACHER!! And keep doing what your doing - and the rest of us KNOW you will need to write blogs like this every once in a while!! SMILES XOXOX

I just want to thank you for all the great blog posts you write, for your great books and for all the patterns and enjoyment you've provided quilters with. Personally, I go to a class to hear the voice behind the work, enjoy fellowship and nose in other peoples color combinations and styles - it's all about learning and enjoying....you do that in your class, lecture, blog, facebook and books - carry on your good work!

I have learned so much about quilting since I began following your blog about a year ago. Last summer (I'm a school teacher) I completed the Roll Cotton Boll Roll quilt top and have begun on the mystery quilt Orca Bay. I have also used a couple of your free patterns to make donation quilts for my local quilt guild's auction. In my free time ... I am working on the Christmas hexie quilt. I have had so many compliments and I always credit you and ask people to check out your web. Let's see I also have to thank you for the free Kindle books you let us know about. I had the opportunity to see you at the Ft. Worth TX guild last year as well as purchase your books.

So I can't thank you enough for all the "free" help you give us quilters.

Way to go Bonnie! I totally understand your pain - so many readers and so many opinions and so much pressure to be and do and say and link to everything that will make everyone happy.

You simply MUST set limits. It won't make everyone happy, but that isn't your job, and as for the chick that dropped out of your class - would you really want to meet her in person, or have to teach her for 6 hours in class?!

Relax and enjoy that beautiful beach. You've done nothing wrong and have nothing to feel bad about. Just keep making quilts and the quilters will keep coming.

Good for you Bonnie. I love reading about your travels and quilting adventures. Didn't anyone ever teach them life isn't that way? People are individuals, and have different ideas, and ways of doing things. I always learn from each different technique I see, etc. Keep up the good work! And have fun! That lady in Florida has no idea what she is going to be missing!

I noticed the changes in your blog and figured you must have done it for a reason. I enjoyed following some of your "favorites" but have included them in my own blog so I can find them when I want to. It NEVER occurred to me that you had suddenly "lost interest" in people. Just thought you were making changes....it's your blog, babe, and you do OWN it.

You are right, it is your blog and you can blog about what ever you want and set it up any way you want. I am so glad to be able to read what you write, I enjoy your trips and the side things you do that are not quilt related. I put quilty things on my blog but also include other things like what is going on at the time on our farm, etc. and if my readers don't like that it is just too bad because like you said IT IS YOUR BLOG! Keep up the good blogging!

Haaaa Haaaa Haaaa Haaaa ROFL Not laughing at you Bonnie but at how some people love to turn around and show their fanny to everyone in public. I am glad you vented and now let it roll of your back and let the rest of us go on enjoying how you want to do things.

I am with Marj -- I did not even notice anything had changed and I have you linked in 'my own blog' and in my favorites so that I can click and read. I guess I am just a control freak because I hate to depend on someone else be responsible for me.

I will leave you with this, the Wikipedia definition of a blog.

A blog (a blend of the term web log)[1]
is a personal journal published on the
World Wide Web

Cheers.

Bonnie, I agree with all the comments above. I rarely write a comment but this just got to me. It is YOUR blog to do whatever you want with. I have found you to be the most incredibly generous person with your patterns and freebies, as well as your wonderful tutorials and mysteries. I ready your blog a few times a week and love it. Thank you so much for all you do for the quilting world.

I will be doing a little mystery based on one of your free patterns in March for our guild's children's charity. Your patterns are fun and easy for all levels. Thank you again.

Bonnie, The biggest reason I love your blog so much is because it is so personal. You're the only one I read daily. Your continued generosity in sharing your life and your work with us (for the most part total strangers) is truly heartwarming. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

One of the beauties of your blog is the fact that it is YOURS. I enjoy every aspect and greatly appreciate your honesty, energy and positive generous attitude. I believe that a definition of a blog is that it is a personal computer journal, with emphasis on the personal, that is shared publicly. That means you make all the decision and choices. Too much of our lives involve things that we have no choice about. Bravo Bonnie for sticking up for yourself and politely but firmly putting pushy people in their place. I am one of your continuing fans who will continue to enjoy your blog while I live my own life...Thank you for adding to my life in a positive way...Ursula

Just keep doing your thing that way you want to do it...I've been very blessed by your generous spirit and I'm sorry that other people aren't being as nice as they should. Hang in there and keep doing things your own way...it's working great as far as I can see!

Our blogs belong to us. When I started blogging I didn't even tell anyone. Then one friend from a teachers forum found out and I became more public. I've been blogging for nearly five years now and I have followers and readers, but not in huge numbers.I am a TC at Blogger Help Forums and it drives me crazy sometimes when people ask why their blog, which is two days old and has one post is not in the top of Google search.

What we write or read is for us to say. If others benefit, then good. If they don't, then tough--they do anyway because we have had the opportunity to get it out of our system.

You go girl!!!!

There are lots of weird, greedy and just plain stupid people out there. If you weed them out though, you'll find the vast majority are people who love you and are easy to love right back! Try to ignore the former and dwell on those thousands of us who LOVE what you do, what you say and how you say it.

I am blown away almost daily by how entitled many people seem to have become. Give them a little, and they feel entitled to so much more. And if we don't tell them (nicely, mind you), where to get off, their sense of entitlement will continue to expand. What to put your foot down, Bonnie!

Bonnie, This is YOUR blog to DO WITH AS YOU WISH. I'm amazed and appalled that people react this way. We need to remember to be courteous and kind to one another. If what we're about to type in an email or blog response is not something we would SPEAK to the person directly, then we shouldn't hit the keys and press "send". Hopefully the need won't be there again, but if it is: STAND STRONG. As my dad says, "Good on you, girl!"
Thanks for sharing what you do. I feel totally blessed by you. :-) Sandi B

Your blog is my favourite blog. I think it was the first blog I ever read and you inspired me to start blogging too. (Can you tell I love your blog lol) Please don't let the few idiots out there get to you. I think most bloggers get silly requests, it's just your readership is so large you get heaps more!
Here's some of the things I have been asked to do.

I have some of my fav merchants listed on my blog. These are merchants that I know personally and I know they go the 'extra mile'. They also support my Quilt Club. But because of this I get requests from other shops (that I have never visited) to add them on the list. I just reply saying these are personal friends, and leave it there.

The funniest thing I have been asked to put on my blog is puppies for sale! (It is a quilt related blog, not a dog blog!)

I had a request from one blogger asking me how she could add her blog to my sidebar (she thought she could do it from her end!) I had to email back and say she couldn't do that, that only the blog writer could add things to their own blog ;-)

Sometimes I suggest that they start their own blog. I have offered to help them get started too, that usually stops them in their tracks ;-)

I love your blog because it is your blog, I did use the side bar to go to a couple of other blogs, but it is no problem for me to just go there direct.
I'm glad you posted your feelings about this, and I hope you feel better getting it off your chest.

PS that beach is gorgeous !

When I worked at a fabric shop people would come in DAILY to buy fabic and want us to calculate exactly how much they needed to buy for their quilt. Ditto to all the comments above. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your blog and your wonderful patterns. I have made several of your patterns and have enjoyed every minute of it.

some people need to grow up, get a life, think about other people besides themselves.
Your eagerness to answer quickly to some people could be seen as being an others pleaser, or an caring for other's type of person! I think it speaks to the true, honest, caring person you are. You desire to share unselfishly with others speaks for the type of person you are.
For me, I don't think you have the time or compassion for people who cannot pull up their "big girl pants"!

Some people just do not understand what taking a class means. She had a preconcieved idea of how the quilt was going together and would have been a terrible student anyway! I taught beginning classes at a quilt shop I worked at a few years ago. A stripped pieced Trip Around the World is one of my favorite classes to teach. I had one student who didn't want to sew her stips in class, then the next week when the rest of the class was sub-cutting all of their panels, she pulled out a sheet with all of her squares pinned to it an ask me what she should do next. I told her I didn't know, that wasn't the class I was teaching. Your class is better off without her... But can I fill her spot?

Sharon-- you meant " knickers" right? Drat auto correct! Though it is a pretty funny mental ;-)

I've tried to follow the motto- "just because you can doesn't mean you should"- professionally as a Nurse and personally for many years. At times that has included reminding myself there's no point in wasting my time and energy on some folks. You can't talk sense into a crazy person or a closed mind. Your blog is yours, and you very generously share so much of yourself, your friends and travels, and your designs. There shouldn't be any expectation by followers that you will or should continue to do so, though I am delighted you plan to. I hope you can easily recharge your spirit with the beauty of Nature- and maybe a dose or two of wine or spirits! Laughter in large doses and fabric acquisition therapy should also help. Don't forget the chocolate!
