If "Diamonds are a girl's best friend!" then diamonds should be a quilty girl's best friend too!
And we are having an awesome time stitching up string pieced diamonds, and then joining those diamonds into large diamonds that become the 8 pointed star in the center of this quilt.
There is a whole lot of piecing that has to happen just to get one big diamond made - and to inset a side triangle or corner square we need at least TWO big diamonds constructed.
My goal for this workshop was to have everyone have at least two of the big diamonds made so they could get some experience with Y seams - which is not as scary as it looks.
The pattern for Santa Fe String Star is found in my book String Fling.
Here are some progress photos for yesterday's workshop time.
TWO! There is a corner or setting triangle waiting in the wings!
Almost enough for two here!
The scraps have been phenomenal!
All of the best saved pieces going in!
These two have been sewn together and are awaiting the next piece.
What color will the background be?
Aqua for the win!
And look at that Y seam perfection!
Sometimes it's best to wait and decide what color your background will be - you never know what color is going to make all of those string diamonds pop. Aqua looks great here, doesn't it?
Oh my goodness! This is so cool and calming!
Pam has successfully sewn her first inset triangle for her neutral on blue Santa Fe String Star!
We are covering so many skill builders such as cutting large pieces using the two ruler method, inset Y seams, marking for successful Y seams, sewing bias edges, adjusting for finished unit size, and pressing!
I can't wait to show you more as these ladies get further along.
After lunch yesterday the ladies headed out to get a quilt shop fix while I ran IVY for her last shot at the vet. When I came back they were still gone. I did some sewing of my own while waiting to see just what they had purchased - and they were STILL gone! LOL!
I guess two days of workshop meant that they needed some recess time and I'm glad they got it.
They were headed straight to dinner (after a call came in) and I'll see them this morning for workshop day 3.
They must have had a REALLY good time! LOL!
My circuit board woes area ending!
It turns out it was only the one board (on the right) that had the issue - the other board looks to be fine and a replacement is on its way to me - I have tracking number in hand! I am hoping by this time next week I'll be back up and running.
In the mean time:
This has taken over my cutting table!
Everything's coming up purple!
I grabbed some time over the past couple of days to pull out my Ruby Jubilee blocks and start playing.
The way editor Denise designed this quilt in sections that can be moved around and shifted, flipped or shuffled is genius!
I made my blocks completely scrappy and am moving the blocks around to find places where the fabrics don't fight each other as they would in the original layout.
I am also incorporating some newly refound string piecing thanks to the purple string bin!
I've also found ways to use up other orphan blocks instead of solid squares or rectangles of neutral fabric. It's all a happy mess and I'm having a blast making it!
What I love about making this quilt in sections is that I can even shuffle the rows to find the best placement for my blocks.
All of these quilts may start with the same blocks, but they are all going to look so different and it is just fantastic!
It was hard to put everything away and come home to cook dinner last night. I'll be back at playing with these blocks after workshop time is over later today.
