Running for the Borders!

This was my day yesterday.

And if it looks like it was an easy choice - it wasn't!

I must have pulled 8 to 10 different combinations of fabrics from the stash cabinets as possible borders for my Churn Dash quilt -

And I was ALMOST ready to give up when these two jumped out at me.

First the orange - but what to pair it with?

And then that wild raspberry tie-dye looking thing.

Sometimes it's hard to decide when it is a multi-color quilt top. I first thought BLUE!  But then no.  What about red?  (Note to self - I've done a lot of red lately, give it a rest!)

I really didn't want a purple-purple.  And definitely not a green (See not to self above.  The same applies.)

Can I go with orange and raspberry?

Well why not!?

I think this will do!

Yup!

All happy here - but what next?

The rest of the afternoon was spent also pulling backing fabrics.

I LOVED this green/yellow/rust/gray print.  But I had less than a yard of it.  It wasn't enough to use as borders. (And it's directional and a hard to match large scale print so piecing borders from it could look wonky unless you have enough yardage to watch the repeat.)

I had one long section of this mottled peachy/yellow with pink undertones and splotches used as the center panel.

A couple of other yellow prints flanked the green stripes and I was good to go.

why did this take longer than putting borders on?

This is before everything got a really good pressing.

I love the color combo in that green print.  But can you see what I mean about it being a bit harder to work with (Unless I had 8 yards for a backing?  Even then, I'd have to watch the repeat when piecing a backing because it could look really off.)

Finally in the machine!

That peach print?

A favorite from 1981!

I remember - because I made a dress out of that same print in the pink colorway for my first date with the Hubster in May, 1981.  I bought the fabric at the local TG&Y.

This piece came in the scrap bags I recently received and I'm happy to include it in here with so many other oldie but goodies.

Nearing 5pm.  Time to go home.

I only got one row quilted.  The rest will wait for today. And then the war of what to bind it with will begin.

I'm sure Lola has some opinions.  LOL!

I spent last evening working on that (*&@#*&@ applique while Ivy told me about everything I was possibly doing wrong, and likely could do better.

A couple of more evenings.  Maybe by the end of the weekend.  And I'll be done.

PS.  If you notice the turned over laundry basket in the background - that's Zoey's toy basket and every evening she knocks it over, dumps all of her toys out and spreads them all over the living room.

It's an evening ritual!

Rain started pounding in the wee small hours last night, the sound of it hitting the metal roof above me waking me from a sound sleep. The rest of the night was intermittent dozing with my mind trying to let go of the sound and find my way back to rem.

We didn't even make it down to freezing.  We've got sopping soggy rain for the next couple of days, but freezing temps will arrive back over the weekend. I think we are officially entering the season of mud.

I know many of you are being pounded by yet another winter round of snow and ice and wind and yuck - hang in there!  Keep the home fires burning and quilt away while you can!

Tomorrow - be sure to come back.  I've got a gift-away that's going to be really fun.  I'll be sharing some things I've been working on behind the scenes, and there is more to talk about!

I LOVE that border color combo!! Borders are always my hold-up. And SO FUNNY you mentioned TG&Y. I worked there for a few months before/during Christmas back around 1976-77 as a second job trying to make money for my baby boy's Christmas. It was a good temp job with a discount!!

Love your border. Just finished a UFO and had the same problem for a border. Had a flood in my sewing room so have been working out of the second floor front room for the last 3 1/2 months on anything I could grab before they packed everything up except my fabric room. Getting some UFOs done. Have a good day.

Love the orange and raspberry borders. So nice and bright and happy against the neutrals. Question... does Zoey put her toys back in the basket at the end of the day or is that a privilege she leaves to you and hubby? LOL.

Love love that border, never thought of those two going together. I'm in awe of what you do. I enjoy your blogs so very much I'm going fishing in the tubs to find enough reds to do a churn dash . Have a great and blessed weekend

The borders look awesome and vibrant! I love how your Churn Dash is turning out, and the offset layout is clever and fun.

LOL, I had to look up what TG&Y was. Growing up on Long Island we had a five & dime chain store in my home town called Woolworths. That's where my mom used to buy fabric to make clothes for me and my sister. It was our favorite store because there was always the chance we'd be able to get a small toy or even on a rare occasion a Barbie doll or clothes for our Barbies. Thanks so much for bringing back such a fond memory of my childhood in the mid 1960's. Your fan in Port Orange, FL, Karen L.

Okay, I looked at those two strips of fabric on the flimsy and was sure your usual impeccable judgment had turned south. Then I looked at the picture with them sewn on. I should have known to trust you. Amazingly lovely! LOL, you'd think I'd know by now that you know what you're doing. :-) (I do hope you're laughing; that was my intent.)

Oh my dear friend Carol said that TG&Y meant Turtles, Girdles and Yo-yos. That store had them all!!

I was cutting blocks for my temp quilt last night, and that color combo kept coming up…cheddar & violet. I was thinking…I need to make a quilt in these two colors…I love them together! It is perfect for your quilt!

I grew up on Long Island too! My mom's sister worked in the Riverhead Woolworths so we went there all the time to their snack bar. Good memories!

I was an assistant manager at a TG&Y back in the early 80s (think Cabbage Patch dolls), and we had a great fabric department (for the times). We also had an amazing lady, Miss Clara, who I stole from fabric for the crafts department. We had to expand the craft department three times because she got everybody crafting. I love the quilt, especially that fantastic border choice.

A silly question: Ivy and Lola live in one house or two? Love seeing them both. Love your borders, thanks to you all the hot and vibrant pink fabrics got used to make the mystery quilt top.

I love this entire quilt so much! Everything about this sings to me!

Thought of you today when you were picking out messed up stitches from long arm. I messed up a machine decorative stitched quiled area. It took 3 hours as one area was REALLY messed up. Put away for the day! Watching it still snow,,, 13 inches and still snowing. -19 expected tomorrow night.

I never would have thought of putting that orange and raspberry together but I LOVE it.

The orange and raspberry border are perfect for the quilt. I love it. I like the Cat in the Hat fabric block. I bought fabric at T.G.&Y. and later when it became Scott's. Woolworth's and Kresge's had fabric too. I had that peach fabric print in cream with brown flowers. I bought it at J. C. Penney's in 1981.

Why are picking borders, backing and binding so time consuming? I hear some do it when choosing fabrics for the top. Only occasionally have I picked the backing from my stash at the same time or made the top to go with the backing. I cut border strips recently and messed up one. I had a narrower size for the sides, so I recut the messed up (slipped ruler) wider strip for one of those, but then cut the other side too narrow. Because of the first mistake there wasn't enough fabric for another strip to replace the narrow. Back to the fabrics I had been considering and made the side borders from another fabric. I
do have an ugly fabric chosen for the back and a fabric for the binding.

My first quilt was made with Kettle Cloth from TG&Y back in the ‘80’s! Loved that fabric!!!

Ahhhh, I miss TG&Y! Love the orange & raspberry borders!

This is one magnificent quilt. Will there be a pattern for it at some point? As so many have said, I would not have put the orange and raspberry together until now. They make a good combination in cooking and it seems that they work in quilting too. Great choice.

I cannot go another blogpost without telling you how much I admire how wonderfully straight every border you put on is! I struggle so much with it that I mostly just make the piecing bigger and skip it altogether…..especially since I long arm my own quilts now! Envy.itis…….

Orange and raspberry pink - perfect!

Janet of MN said...

Me too. I couldn't figure out the combination until you sewed it on. Marvelous as always. By the way, I think Lola may need glasses or maybe she just has a lazy eye that wanders. Oh well, have a nice day everyone.

Nell K, What state/city do you live in?

Oh Wow!!What an awesome quilt!! I love all the inspiration you give me.. I loved how you pieced your backing. I have no excuse now that I don't have any backing fabric...LOL! Sometimes I have trouble finishing as I don't think it's good enough. Have a wonderful weekend!!

Two houses - Lola at the QPO studio and Ivy at the cabin. They don't get along.

I used to buy almost all of my fabric from TG&Y. They had the best selection of cottons and cotton knits. I loved that fabric department. When I needed special fabrics and notions, I drove downtown to Baer Fabrics, the best fabric shop ever.

Oh my gosh. I used to have so much fun wandering the aisles of TG&Y, trying to decide how to spend my allowance!
