On Thin Ice!

It's like everything has been dipped in glass -

It started on Thursday night, and I heard the rain.

But it wasn't until I stepped out onto the gravel parking area at the top of the cabin drive to warm up my van after uploading yesterday's post that I knew I wouldn't be going anywhere.

Not for a few hours at least.

The falling rain had iced everything over, freezing even the gravel of the drive into a solid sheet of ice.

You know how gravel moves and shifts under foot?

In this case, it was like the gravel had been cased in cement.  Only much slicker!

Thick on the windshield!

Super thick and nearly unscrapeable on the side windows.

And suddenly I had an urge to just throw up my hands, head to the kitchen and bake a batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. (recipes tab)

Because what ELSE could I do?

I called and changed my mammogram appointment to Wednesday since it wasn't safe to drive.

I think Zoey has the right idea -

Belly up to the fire and wait for at thaw!

I worked some on the blue project.

YAY!

And I know this doesn't show you much yet, but just wait and see.  I'm not ready to share more.

At 1pm, the Hubster was out on the steep hairpin curve on our drive with a flame thrower (weed burner -not kidding!) trying to melt the ice on the most dangerous part of the drive.

The melted ice would run down a few feet, and then freeze again.  It's been that miserable.

After giving that up, he drove the RZR with the tire chains up and down the drive trying to break up the ice a bit so I could get the van down.

About 2pm he drove me and the van down to the bottom of the drive (Slip sliding away!) and then I drove in to the Quiltville Post Office to get some work done. He hiked his way back up to the cabin to continue his work day Friday.

Let's just say there were fewer cookies left when I returned home last night, than when I left! LOL! (He earned it!)

Since the whole day was a shift - I didn't finish the quilting on the Catching Rainbows quilt - but I'm close.  I only have about 3 passes left to do today and then I'll be ready to put binding on.

The binding is made, pressed, and ready for attaching.

Can I just say how addicted I am to skinny sashings and baby cornerstones?  They add something visual to the quilt without overpowering the patchwork of the blocks.

I was SO tempted to just stay and finish - this is the last row of blocks you see.  But dinner was waiting, I was tired, and I wanted to get home before temps dropped again below freezing.

Jennie sent in a photo of her One Block Forever Mine!

She swapped out lavender for my aqua.

SO CUTE, JENNIE!

Marcia's 2 block runner!

She said this will fit her table just great!  Such cute fabrics, Marcia!

There is still time - but just a couple of days!

The introductory price for Forever Mine is marked at 25% off the regular price ($9.00) through Valentine's Day (SUNDAY!)  After that, the price reverts to $12.00.

You'll find it in the digital patterns section of the Quiltville Store.

Valentine's SewPad Special!
If you have been wanting a SewPad but were waiting for the next FREE PRIORITY SHIPPING (Within the USA) offer - this is it!

What is a SewPad?

SewPad™ is filled with a thick cushion of proprietary viscoelastic polymer gel– the same stuff used in surgical mats and wheelchair pads.

Unlike foam (memory foam or otherwise) gel doesn’t bottom-out and it provides comfort and support by diffusing and distributing pressure.

Upholstered in a plush layer of AirFlex™ fabric, SewPad™ helps your backside stay cool while the no-slip bottom keeps it from sliding around in your chair.

SewPad™ was designed for quilters and crafters, but we think you’ll find other uses as well.

Church. Stadium seats, in the car and anywhere else that you might expect to be sitting for a good while.

Being comfortable is a wonderful thing!

I can sew happily for hours in comfort.  This thing goes where I go, to wherever I sew. It can even go to basketball games with me for bleacher seating (when that opens up again!) or on long car rides.

Our SewPad  Valentine’s Day Sale will kick-off on Friday February 12th and run thru Midnight Monday February 15th with FREE PRIORITY SHIPPING using Coupon Code SEWCOMFY at checkout.

Your hips, your back, and YOU deserve to sew in comfort with a SewPad!

Today I do believe I will be diving in to Casden's denim quilt.  I didn't yesterday because the pieces were left at the QPO.  Today I begin.

How about your plans for the weekend?

Quiltville Quote of the Day!
Vintage Lemoyne star quilt found in Texas.

Worrying can't stop the bad stuff from happening, but it can stop you from enjoying the good.
Don't let worry steal your peace.

Have a happy quilty weekend! I'll catch you back here on Monday -

A good "magic" instant thick de-icer for car windows: Put in a spray bottle: 1/3 water and 2/3 isopropyl alcohol; 2 drops dish detergent. Spray on ice on car windows. You can just see the ice melt and loosen from the glass. I've used it a lot and the only problem I have is that I forget to make it !

Oooohh, I have had that thick ice on my car windows before. We're due for the ice today in Maryland. Looking forward to seeing the blue scraps shape up. I put a red gingham from a tablecloth as a skinny binding on a quilt, with tiny dark green corners. The corners look like emeralds, and I love it!

That icy rain is headed my way in New York. It's supposed to start very late tonight and continue through tomorrow morning. Another couple of days to just stay put. It will land on the about 3 feet of snow we've gotten so far this winter!

It's 28 degrees and snowing in my part of lowland Western Washington. This is not usual for us. So today is a snow day. Will be attending a Zoom in with my quilt guild. Making a back for a quilt and working on a table runner.

The cookies were a great thank you reward for getting you safely down the drive.

I, too, am making a 2 block Forever Mine runner and it was great to see Marcia's runner. I wondered about making the neutral string blocks and just using fabric squares, but I'm so glad I went ahead and did the strings. Love the pattern!

Your quote hit the nail on the head. We bought a house in Wy last weekend and are now in packing mode for a move later this spring from AZ. We have been in our house for 28 years. Worry and anxiety are constantly part of my life now. I need to take hold and not let these feelings control me. Thank you for the reminder.

0* and snowing in upper NE Missouri. This is on top of ice and 6" of snow. I will be piecing together my Frogs on Grassy Creek. Stay safe and stay warm.

Your driveway looks even steeper than mine! It’s scary going up and down! I’m a few years older than you but you might want to think about investing in “yak- trax” for both of you. They are rubber things you slip on boots and shoes to keep you from falling on the ice. There are springs on the bottom as grips. They work really well. Buy larger than they say, easier to get on and off. I live in the mountains if NY and we get some pretty intense weather. I don’t think we bounce so well as we get older,LOL. Who wants to bounce on ice, anyway. Stay warm and safe.

I had to postpone today’s mammogram because of the freezing rain and sleet and ice too. I live in northern VA but we had the same mess as you.

Freezing rain here in Oregon. Power is out, trees down, transformers blown... great weather to cut out a bunch of scrub caps for my daughter and the other ICU nurses. Power not set to come back on until tomorrow at 6. Good thing I have cats to keep me warm... and that fabric insulation!

No ice here, but possibly up to 10 inches of snow in the next 36 hours! I am a little excited, we haven't had this much snow in years. Also I have some of the mottled pink fabric next to the cat-print background in a quilt top my mom made me in the early 90s. I love it so much!

Thanks for this Chris! Had to use it to get into the hubby’s truck. Not used to this weather down in Texas!
