A Day Full to Overflowing!

20181005_082725-001

It all started with crappy internet.  Doesn’t it always?

It’s one of those “things” when staying in random hotels.  Ground floor room, way back corner – it said I was “connected” but that “No internet” statement next to the word connected pretty much stopped me in my tracks and got my morning rolling at the same time. It was that much of a dead zone that not even my phone hotspot could connect me.

If I left the hotel, and headed west to Charlottesville I’d be THAT much closer to my meet up place with Jeanette, and I could find a place that has wifi and I’d be good.

I am a routine follower.  I need to let go of that.  Anyone who has stayed with me, or had me stay with them know that I do certain things on schedule at certain times of the day – and blog is usually second after getting up and getting going.

Well yesterday, I got up and got OUT instead!

20181005_081144

The mountains are protruding above the clouds and morning fog!

Can you hear my sigh of bliss?  I am a mountain girl through and through!

20181005_082659-001

On the Blueridge Parkway – Skyline Drive!

Sure, there is time for this!

(That getting off of schedule thing has turned me into a wild woman!)

20181005_083545

Pictures can’t do this justice – it just can’t.

But here’s a little video.  Click to Play:

I drove for a bit, got off the parkway and found a Sheetz gas station in which to write yesterday’s post.  A bit later than usual, but I would have missed all of the above had I not taken myself off routine.  DARE TO GO OFF ROUTINE!

20181005_110055

waiting for Jeanette to arrive!

I had asked Melinda where a good place to meet in Staunton would be since I didn’t know the area.  This was perfect!  And the food was great too.

20181005_112605

Jeanette and I in front of the coolest 1950s station wagon ever!

20181005_110027

Oh my word!  I love this!

20181005_112531

HA!  It’s a Fordomatic!

(It says so on the right!)

(Sorry about the dumpster in the photo.)

I love how EVERYTHING in the 50s was a something-o-matic.

We enjoyed our lunch together after loading this precious cargo into the back of the van to join the two sleigh beds I had picked up the day before from Carol in Bedford.

20181005_112745

Maple!  With pineapple finials!

The story goes that these belonged to Jeanette’s aunt and just like most of the things that had come my way – the “younger generation” doesn’t want this stuff.  they don’t want matching twin beds in dark wood.  Kids are now married and have kids of their own – or the grandkids are now adults and no one wants to sleep in twin beds.

It’s me or a yard sale. Or Goodwill.  And they’d like these pieces to go where they can be used and loved and enjoyed by others.

I am saying this because I’ve dealt with some “not so nice” comments and emails from folks saying “Well, it must be special to be you with everything people are so freely giving you….” And it kind of stung.  I realize there is a fine line in what to share, and what to keep to myself.  And some people just love sucking on sour grapes. and I’m sorry for that.

I’m grateful that so many want to be a part of Quiltville Inn.  I’m sad that people have taken the view that I am bragging about these “house warming” gifts that have been so lovingly given.  I’m not.  I am recognizing those who made these wonderful contributions.

20181005_181733

Carol’s sleigh beds have been set up in room 3!

20181005_181754

The bed I purchased from Facebook Marketplace joins them!

They fit well together – this one also has a “curved” headboard and footboard much like the sleigh beds.

I’m still looking for the right sitting area furniture to go in the turret space.  It will come in time.

20181005_192839

Jeanette’s beds are now in bedroom #4.

20181005_192827

Another mahogany bed in the corner.

This one is going to need some refinishing – but I couldn’t resist setting it up just to see how the space fit.

So guess what?  ALL rooms have ALL the beds we need.  16 beds ready for new mattresses, quilts, pillows – COLOR!

20181005_185549

Sun setting behind clouds.

Bare trees.

Pink sky.

I spent the night at the cabin last night, kitting up my On-the-Go project for Nebraska and am on my way home today – with a stop in West Jefferson to quickly go through the outdoor Antiques fair, and a meet up with Martha and her friend for lunch before pointing Moby home toward Winston Salem.

And yes, there is so much more I wanted to post today -  But it would make this really too long.

Not only did I stop to take photos of mountain ranges, I stopped to take pictures of falling down abandoned houses and log cabins and churchyards and graveyards and autumn color.

I sat on a stone bench in the cemetery surrounded by wonderful hand carved headstones and had an hour long conversation with my dad.

Perhaps I’ll fill you in on that later -

Nebraska tomorrow – must pack!

Quiltville Quote of the Day!

Vintage log cabin quilt found in Wytheville, VA.

I was talking with a friend on how to feel more productive. One of the biggest things is to not feel guilty over the creative stuff you own, or bad about what you don't own.

Don't compare your studio space to anyone else's - whether you are stitching at the kitchen table, taking over the dining room, or using a small space in your basement, it doesn't matter. Create in the space that is yours.

Whether it is messy, or clean doesn't matter. What matters is that you allow yourself the time to do what you love even if it is full of mistakes and false starts. No judging on yourself-

There should be no GUILT in QUILT.

Now get in there and do it!

I think it is wonderful you have been gifted beds, dressers, tables and chairs for Quiltville Inn. The Inn looks so cozy and warm and inviting. I wish I could also gift you furniture that I have in my basement but even though you are coming to Nebraska where I live, I don't think you want to take it on a plane!:)

I loved this post! No guilt in quilt. I have been racking my brain trying to think of something I could donate to Quiltville Inn. Also I have to fight to have a routine. I am very squirrelly.

That photo of the retreat is gorgeous with the silhouettes of the trees.

I had to chuckle over your calling yourself a wild woman for getting off your routine. Anyone who has read your blog for more than a month, knows how disciplined you are!
As to others trying to guilt you over donated furnishings for Quiltville Inn, it sounds like jealousy to me. I'm at the stage in my life where I need to be thinking of downsizing and being able to donate things to places where they will be loved and used I count as a blessing for me! Wish you were closer to me so I could off load some "stuff" I no longer need and the Inn could use.
You ARE special and you are loved, and that's why this stuff is coming to you. We want to share in the joy and success of your new adventure.

Dear Sweet Bonnie,

I have a bit of advice for friends and readers of your blog. If you don't have anything nice to say (or write), please don't say anything at all! (The Thumper theory) People need to use their kindness filters when expressing themselves. You are such a sweetheart to share your adventures, patterns, and creative spirit with us all! I know you have a tender heart. People, please be kind to Miss Bonnie! Thank you, Bonnie! Keep smiling and loving life! You are an inspiration to us all! I just started a Scrappy Mountain Majesties Quilt with my snow dyed fabrics I did this past winter. It is looking good! Thank you! Have a happy weekend!

I feel that someone who criticizes you for the gifts given to the Inn are just not happy folks! I still have a few things for you and hope you don't fill up the Inn before you can get them. I love the thought that someone else can appreciate the things we give and give them a permanent home. It is a heart warming feeling that you can use these items and give them a good home. Money saved by the gifting can be used for more essential items at the Inn. Happy thoughts and big hugs to you Bonnie! The Inn is growing wonderfully.

Sharon Decker said...

Each item has been given because the person offering it cared about you and cared about your project. You loved receiving the items and they loved giving them to you. Having met you in Hershey in a class, I fully understand why people are giving you things. You are a warm and welcoming person who enjoys life and enjoys sharing that and your knowledge with others. I hope you continue to do so for as long as you care to continue.

I’m thankful with you for all these sweet gifts. What an amazing “ house warming”.

I think it’s a wonderful gesture by all these lovely people to help you fill Quiltville inn with furniture full of precious memories. Some people just love to pick holes in whatever anyone eks3 is doing if it doesn’t fit into what they consider to be correct. I als think it shows how much you ar3 respected and loved for all you do for others, as my gran always said “haters got to hate”
Your pictures of the beautiful mountains and your video are absolutely stunning, thank you so much for sharing with us.
Love and quilty hugs

I love the way the pineapple beds coordinate so well with Moby. I also love the generosity of your fans/friends for helping get Quiltville Inn ready for us to all go there.

So happy about the way people are being generous and giving their family pieces to you. You will have a most unique Inn and all who visit will know that the pieces have a history, and that history will live on through the years.

Natasha said...

People are happily donating their treasures to you because you are going to honor them and care for them. Don't let negative people's comments slow you down. What you are doing is fantastic! I'm happy for you and for all the quilters who will be able to enjoy this new place. Happy quilting!

My Mother always said "I f you do not have anything nice to say, don't say it!". I try to live by this. And have we forgotten the rules? Reuse, recycle, repurpose. And last but not least, the quicker Quiltville fans and followers help fill up the in the quicker it will open!

oh, boy! I feel sorry for people who are so unhappy that they feel the need to make others unhappy too...jealous? envious? hurting? Just bless them and shake off the mean spirited hurt, it doesn't belong to you. The showering of gifts and the heartfelt acknowledgement of those items AS gifts is all that's required... and thank you for your continued encouragement, it felt just right to my situation, love, hugs and blessings from Cats in Carlsbad CA

Carol said...

Your followers are OFFERING these items to you! I spent 6 months when my mom died getting ready for an estate sale. The old, well built, furniture, and china, are not wanted by most of the younger generations. It has to be so hard to bare your heart in your blog and have it picked and pulled apart. Blessings to you for bringing joy to my life

Kristin said...

Congratulations on securing the final bed. I can’t wait to see how the rooms will look with mattresses and quilts. It is a lot of fun to follow along and watch Quiltville Inn come together. Very sorry to hear the nasty-grams you’ve been getting. Why can’t people follow the rule, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!”??!?!

BrenWall61@gmail.com said...

It is wonderful how excited others are about Quiltville Inn and in sharing things with you for this venture. If not for their generosity you might still be searching for so many items. I may never get to Quiltville Inn but it has been a pleasure to share this journey with you and your friends. You do so much for so many and show how life goes on even with the "bumps in the road".

Bonnie, People who offer those snarky comments are unhappy & jealous. Whenever I have encountered that type of individual, I simply remember a phrase my mom taught me, "Consider the source and ignore the remark." They are not worth my time of day! Happy for your new life chapter!

SewAmused said...

Of course it is special for you to be gifted those things, because you ARE special. Your blog and Facebook followers knew you'd care for those items they gifted you. Nothing wrong with that. Critics are jealous, plain and simple. It's an ugly dark society we live in these days, and Quiltville makes it a bit brighter. Thank you.

Enjoy all your gifted items...you've given a lot of yourself to others and now the gifts are coming to you. I'd rather see things get a new life at Quiltville Inn than go in a dumpster. Some people try to suck the joy out of everything. Ignore them and go your happy way!

Oh Bonnie,
My heart and your's are at the same place. The mountains are the best!!
I just came home, spending time in the Midwest where it is flat.lol.
The first sitings of the small Mountain range's in MT, then crossing the Rockies. Nothing better. Love the quote: the mountains are calling and I must go.
I love seeing and hearing how the Quiltville Inn is coming along, thank you.

Oops, sightings, not sitings, I do not like this word correcting thing. :(

Man, when we were cleaning out my FIL's house and my grandmother in law's apartment I would have LOVED to have someone who was going to love them take all the beautiful antiques off our hands, instead of just giving them to goodwill. You are giving them such a gift! Why they'll be able to visit their family heirlooms, without having to store them, for years to come! People are so silly sometimes and I find their jealousy really hard to take.

Loretta McGinn said...

Oh Bonnie, It floors me to think people would make such mean comments. Like you say, some people just like to suck grapes. I think it is a two-sided blessing to be able to share well-used, well-loved furniture with someone who will give it such a loving home. If I had something to offer, I would in a hot minute because it would be such comfort to think of my special table, chair or bed being used in such a lovely setting. You are too kind and - believe it - very loved by many. Thank you again for your inspirational and kind blogs.

When you are doing so much. I echo the thought of Thumper! You can hit the Delete button on those negative Nelly's. I'm happy for your love of Vintage things. These Treasures are priceless. Much love and cheering you on to be free and wild in your journeys. The drives have many beautiful views and places to bring peace to you!

lindyloo said...

I honestly have to wonder if those posting their "jealous" comments have ever met you...in person...or taken a class with you. Your kindness and generosity come thru in everything you say and do. I, for one, could not be happier about your success, and all the sharing that has been extended to you. We reap what we sow. The blessings come your way as others are caught up in your goodness, and want to be a part of it all.

FancyNancyQuilts said...

Yes, people are jealous. In our current state of foolishness in this country, you would think people could be less self centered, but alas our leaders have made it clear that civility is no longer valued. But you make a wonderful difference in many people's lives every day, and I thank you.
Yesterday i had the opportunity to judge some quilts from a small guild show in Georgia, and saw several completed Bonnie patterns! Wonderful to enjoy.

I could hear the night time chatter and giggles of women feeling like girls having a sleepover in these rooms. Quiltville Inn is already filling with love and excitement. So awesome to be included in watching her grow. Thanks Bonnie.

What goes around, comes around. Bonnie, you are so generous and kind and share so much of your joy; it lifts so many people. That is why so many want to help and be part of your dream, this retreat we will all have the opportunity to share and gain from. All we can do is feel sympathy for those people who make such nasty comments; they obviously do not have joy to share, only pain and negativity. I can only feel sadness for them and pray some of the world's joy and love can reach them someday. Keep doing what you do, Bonnie, it is good and helps many, many people in many ways.

Ignore the Boobirds. As many have said, I would rather give things to someone who will use them and care about them, than to strangers or the dump. You have given so much to quilters. It's awesome that many are now willing to help you open the Inn.

Thank you Bonnie for giving so many people the opportunity to pass along special things in a guilt free way. When we were cleaning out Mom's house our goal was to send as little as we could to the landfill, and we found many people who could use her household goods in a positive way. You are a blessing to those who can pass those things along to be used by others.

Remember when things were built to last throughout the generations? All the gifted, wonderful furniture at Quiltville Inn is THAT kind of furniture. The current generation of disposable everything, that quality isn't appreciated. I'm so glad that those who love this furniture have found someone to gift it to who will love and respect it! The giver blesses the receiver, but the receiver also abundantly blesses the giver. The color green never looks good on anyone when it is coming from their heart.

If I or anyone else write s something you are offended by, don't question yourself, question them. Who are they to be negative about a gift freely given with love?
They need to be happy for you and your adventure and the gratitude that others feel for all you have done to help others find joy in quilting. The views of the mountains are a great place to release the pettiness and embrace the joy! They can feel however they want, but to say hurtful things is not right. I hope they just didn't think about what they were saying because they were stressed.

Kristin Stonham said...

My five-year-old wandered by as I was reading this post and when he saw the picture of the two pineapple-finial beds set up, he said "Ooh! What pretty beds. I could sleep in those tomorrow." So, you have the approval of the average (quilt-loving) five-year-old! ^_^ Hopefully he'll feel the same way next year when he gets to move up into a big person bed and sleep in the 1930s bed that was mine when I was younger.

Don't let the doubters and sour grape eaters get you down. Quiltville is being built by a community of people who love these things and love sharing them with you, and others.

Thank you for sharing this time in your life of being able to fix up a quilt retreat house. How many of us will ever be able to do this? Not many! So it is wonderful you are willing to share the whole process with the rest of us! It is also great you are willing to take gifts from others who are want to donate and forget those who are jealous, some people just cannot appreciate a good deal. Like my son would say, "Mom, treat it like a turd, flush it and forget it!" Have a fabulous day!

It is so much better to give treasured items to someone who will appreciate them, tell the story about them and use them. If they are gifted to you or purchased, it doesn't matter. They are not going to the tip or good will where they will be loved and cared for. People can be nasty with their comments. Some people just can't be happy for someone else's progress. Keep sharing your good work and love for quilting and of course, QUILTVILLE INN.

Kerry said...

Donating brings happiness to two people - the ones that are giving and the ones that are on the receiving end. Then it goes further - the ones that can sleep in a bed on the retreat! Meanwhile jealous bods just stew in their own juice - it has to be a rather negative effect on their own health! So chin up and lots of hugs! <3

I don't quite get people who want to spread their mean spirited feelings across the rest of us. Donations are one way people who may never stay at the Quiltville Inn can have a feeling of belonging to the place. I will probably never stay there, it sounds lovely, but I live in TX, it just seems wildly unlikely.
I can understand the impulse to find a good home for furniture, we downsized to move to this house. And we had problems finding places for our inherited stuff to go. Goodwill got a small mountain of stuff, I'm still selling off excess on eBay.

Wow that Ford is awesome and brings back memories of the good old days. It just surprises me that people say horrible things. It’s wonderful to see what people are giving you for Quiltville Inn. I look forward to visiting and checking out each one of them as they have a story to tell.
Wish the sour grapes would move along an not comment! To bad we can’t make wine out of those that are whining about you getting these gifts. Beautiful gesture these people have blessed Quiltville Inn. Ignore them!

Bonnie, anyone that reacts negatively to anything you do is most likely jealous and unhappy. They need to put others down to bring themselves up.
Love you and all that you do and all that you are!

Amazing, I am so delighted to see all these loved heirlooms living in a dream world. Please don't let anyone take one minute of your sunshine. Keep shining.

Your coming to a place in life that has allowed you to give other people a chance to give you things that meant something to them and will, in time, mean something to you, is a special gift to you and to all of us by your sharing same.

Long time reader. First time commenter (I think). Your blog is the first thing I read in the morning. I look for the email, click open to read the rest, and start my day by reading about your adventures. And I imagine that I'm not alone in that given the sheer number of people who comment on a daily basis are a fraction of those who just read and appreciate.

What strikes me the most is the community that you've managed to create. Thousands of people are so inspired by your words, creativity, and action that they want to be a part of it. They want to be a part of the dream of Quiltville Inn and so are trying to give back a fraction of what you've put out into the world. And how wonderful is that?

You can't build yourself up by tearing someone else down. And you can't make your light burn brighter by blowing someone else's out. It IS special to be you. It takes an incredibly special talent to build what you've built. And a special amount of energy to put yourself fully out there day to day, whether in classes or through your blog. And I'm thrilled that people are passing their heirlooms on to a place where they'll be loved and appreciated. And I really enjoy reading about your adventures to go get them as well.

Take care and happy stitching and road trippin'

I volunteer at the "swap" area of my local transfer station (/dump), where people bring things they no longer need or want in hopes that someone else can use them. People want these things out of the house, and they tend to be thrilled if someone else wants them right away. Often the furniture belonged to their parents or their grandparents, and they don't have room for it in their own house once those loved ones have passed. But bringing it to the Swap is an unknown -- will someone find this and love it? For a bed, will the rails get separated from the head and footboards and it will just get trashed anyway? So the best case scenario is to find someone you know who will definitely want it. :)

When my husband's grandmother died, we had recently moved into a four bedroom house. Beyond housewares and linens, we got: 3 china cabinets, 2 dressers, 2 beds, an armoire, 2 small tables, and probably more I'm forgetting. It was the best! My in-laws didn't need the stuff, and they were happy we could use it.

Passing along furniture you can't use is the normal way of life, and you know a LOT of people! I'm sure they are so happy to pass it to someone who needs and appreciates it. Good luck with the place; it's looking so good!

Bonnie, I find it hard to believe that your followers can be so petty!! If I had furniture that would go in the Quiltville Inn, I would be more than willing to give them to you.
Your remark about sitting on a bench in the cemetery, talking to your father, "took me aback" for a minute, until I realized you were on the phone with him!!
Have a laugh on me and a beautiful day!!

You can't build yourself up by tearing someone else down. Basic common sense. Wish there was more of that in this world.

There is joy in creation, no matter what you may choose to make. Keep it coming.

Said perfectly. People who are kind & generous receive kindness and generosity in return. Your blogging FRIENDS are loving that they can share in your excitement over your new adventure and love being able to be a part of it in some small way.

I'm a newbie (this year) to Quiltville and your blog, and I absolutely LOVE each and every post. I think it is so awesome that folks are gifting you pieces with history that add warmth, charm, and that history to the inn. When quilters visit they will feel so comfortable because these pieces are coming together to create a warm inviting retreat. I appreciate that you share so much of your journey. It feels good to share and be connected. Let those others go suck their sour grapes. Most of us adore you and your blog, and dream of being able to be your guest at the inn someday.

Bonnie's is the first blog I read each morning, too. I love your comment, especially about the community she has created.

My father grew up in the mountains near Wytheville, VA... One of those cabins you saw could have been in the family...
So delighted that you are saving the joys of the past for others to enjoy in the future...
Thank you for your charm and thrift... Two qualities sadly lacking in todays society...

Some people are just mean spirited...especially on social media. I've been thinking what a tribute it is to you that all these people want to help you make your dream come true. And, hopefully, be able to go to the Inn and spend time with you and be proud that they were a part of it! Don't let those negative people get you down. You are well loved!

I don't think I have ever posted a comment on your blog Bonnie, I figure you have so many comments to read already BUT the NAY SAYERS about the wonderful things your friends have donated not just to you but to EVERY GUEST that will be staying at Quiltville Inn really ruffled my feathers!!! How dare they say

such things when I'm sure they don't mind sewing along with your FREE Mystery Quilt Alongs! Not counting all the FREE Leader/Ender quilts. I guess they don't count all the "FREE" things you give them! Oh and let's not forget your time to set up and run and answer questions on Quiltcam!! Keep up the good good Bonnie and shame on you Nay Sayers!

Oh, Bonnie. Your comment about people being snarky over what you have been blessed with just don't get it. Some things we love and just can't bear to think of them not being loved. So sometimes Goodwill is just not the answer. I have in the past burned somethings that I loved just to make sure they were honored. A big ole bonfire is a lovely way to go rather than being left outside for the garbage man in the rain. People gift you things not only because they have grown to love you but are honored that their lovely old things will continue to live with people who love them and honor them. I think you posted this quote in the past but needs to be said again, "A lion does not honor the opinions of the sheep." Some folks are hurting and think that hurting others will make them feel better. Wonder how's that workin' for them?

Doreen -- perfect response! I only wish I had something to contribute.
