This little beauty arrived home from Quiltmaker Magazine just in time for 4th of July - -
But I didn’t get it photographed until YESTERDAY with all that was going on over the holiday.
And now that I look at it, I think I’ve got it over the rail side ways – those neutral squares are supposed to go up and down top to bottom. But, oh well!
This is Right Way Round, and will be featured in a quickly up-coming issue so stay tuned!
Remember those WRONG WAY blocks I made that ended up in my nephew Henry Joseph’s quilt? (can it really be a year ago I gifted that quilt to my sister in law, Anna?)
Wrong Way Round!
I still have some of those Wrong Way Rolling Stone blocks at the cabin, and I think another mini for the stair well at Quiltville Inn will be forthcoming out of those.
These Rolling Stone blocks were also an Addicted to Scraps Column feature - love them both ways.
The thing I’m most tickled about is that Henry’s quilt has H’s in it – and we didn’t know at the time if he was going to be a he – or what his name would be.
H is for HENRY!
And that Mercedes rental car upgrade was awful sweet too.
I’m feeling particularly sentimental these days knowing that another family reunion was going on over the 4th – and I wasn’t able to be there. But I did get to do video calls with everyone the other night – my sister Mary called me via Facebook video call, and passed her phone around to everyone. It was not quite as good as being there, but fun still the same.
I love the illusion of circles!
This quilt pattern should be hitting your mailboxes and news stands soon. Be watching for it!
Table arranging.
Lisa and I had the last minute job on our way out of town to set up sewing stations in the Quilting Quarters at the Inn.
Each Quiltville Retreater gets a 4 foot table space, and we found it made better space, and ease of getting in and out to push 4 tables together in front of the bay window…leaving more access room on the sides.
The other 4 tables are in pairs, with seating in opposite directions so no one’s chairs back into anyone else. Quilting logistics, you know?
We did mirror image on the second side!
Next up – CHAIRS!
I’m still not completely set on what chairs I want to bring in, they must be comfy for “most” sizes and shapes. Of course, if folks have a favorite chair they are more than welcome to bring their own as there is no way to please everyone 100% of the time.
Now that tables are set up, our electrician can get to work on installing floor plugs to minimize cord tripping.
Dining room chairs in assembly mode.
The rug came WITH the house. I don’t know how old it is – it’s huge. It suits this room, but needs a good cleaning. It’s wool.
Am I safe to rent a rug doctor to deal with getting this rug clean? There are some stains I’d like to see gone, and it needs a freshening up.
Remember that we are VERY VERY rural, and there is no Stanley Steamer in these parts.
There will be two dining tables each sitting 8, for a total of 16 in here as well. And if folks want to spread out, they can bring their machines in here if they need room to sew big things.
Yesterday afternoon & evening.
And today, tomorrow, and Monday and beyond!
The reason I cut my 4th of July holiday a bit short is to get these out. Not as a sacrifice for those who ordered, but for ME – because I want them done and on their way before I leave for Michigan on the 12th. And then – we’ll start round 2 of this whirlwind!
Quilter’s Date Keepers and Quilty Pencil Set packages are arriving at their destinations and I am so happy that you are loving them!
This morning on the porch. Click to play:
Ahhhhhhh! I love summer mornings and sitting on the porch be it at home or at the cabin (or soon to be Quiltville Inn) with my hot beverage of choice and sorting out my day before I dive headlong into it. Such a peaceful time of day.
We may have rain later, and that is fine with me. You know where to find me – at the dining room table, stuffing envelopes!
At least until early evening, when I plan to load that Diamond Tile Little Quilt into the machine and get myself some thread therapy in the process.
Quiltville Quote of the Day!
Vintage quilt shared by Kevin the Quilter!
Feelings aren't facts, and they can play tricks on you. Be willing to dig deeper, to find reasons, to do some research on your own.
We can't help what we feel, but knowing some answers helps put things in perspective.
Have a wonderful Saturday, everyone!

FaceTime videos are fun. The only way I got to see my Grandson in Ohio last Christmas. My book and pencils are taking an extra week to get here. P. O. confusion. The holiday in the middle of the week didn't help. Oh well, I am stitching as fast as I can. It keeps me sane, lol
Bonnie, so great to see your enthusiasm and joy in the Inn. You are getting a LOT done !!! Good work.
I love wrong way round. That one totally captured my attention when you made it. Can't wait for the pattern!
I love Wrong Way Round also. My favorite! Would make a beautiful Quilt of Valor!
It's not the cleaning, but the drying of the rug that might prove problematic, especially for something that big and that old. Since it's a rug and you could roll it up and transport it, you might want to take it to a rug cleaning specialist such as Yeatts in Winston-Salem.
I am just so thrilled for you that you’re getting to make this wonderful Quiltville Inn a reality and bless so many other people in the process!
We have 2 wool rugs, though much smaller (9 x 6) than yours. We just sent them to be cleaned. As the above poster noted, it's all about getting them dry. If they aren't dried well they will get moldy.
Oh! I've been saving recycled shirts in proper Scottish tartans, and have been waiting/looking for just the right block to feature them together in a quilt. That vintage beauty from Kevin might be just the thing!! Saving that.....
I can't decide whether I like Wrong Way or Right Way better - they're both fun and lovely!
I love Henry's Wrong Way quilt also! I can see circles, wheels rolling more than the right way, lol. It's gorgeous in red, white and blue :)
As to the rug, the rent a thing should work fine, but I'd put a tarp under it before you start, because you can't be sure that some soapy water won't leak through before the machine soaks up the excess, especially if this rug doesn't have a strong plasticized bottom layer. To be sure that all goes well, and because sunshine is a great deodorizer, I'd hang it off the porch for a couple of hours as well. Beth's ideas of bringing it somewhere professional would work just as well, but I'm not sure that it would save too much time. Whatever is easier and faster for you should work Oh, there are some pre-rug-shampooing sprays for any spot that you're not sure will be removed with just one machine treatment.
This sounds like a great idea...and I may wait until fall when our humidity has dropped so things can dry off the porch rail a bit better :) If that doesn't work, I'll take it in.
Re: chairs. Lots of folks love the bungee chairs from The Container Store. Wait for a sale.
Resolve has an excellent rug spotter and a separate cleaner that can be used in the rental rug cleaners....the plastic under the rug is good idea....a wet/damp rug will weigh a ton. And might not survive hanging on the railing nor the railing able to support the weight. Test Spotting the rug might help you make a decision. Enjoying your progress....protect that back!!!!
Jane Modjeski enduring a summer cold aggravated by pollen....
Simply gorgeous. We wash our wool rugs outside with soapy water and a broom, then hang them over a wall. If your porch has a slatted wood floor, I’d wash it on that so the water can fall through, then hang it on the railing. Or a tree....
Love the process of making the Inn ready. Don't forget a place for you to sit in the dining room for your meals. It often nice to be with participates.
I had a wool rug and cleaned it severa l times at home. I took it outside to our driveway so it was laying flat ,cleaned it and let it remain there to dry. We're in California so no humidity to worry abt. It turned out wonderfully. I would not hang it over ther rail to dry as it will get a permanent fold in it. Ask me how I know!?! Things at the inn are coming along nicely!
I would not rent a rug cleaner, especially for wool. Both times I have rented a machine I have had to get a professional to redo the carpet, can't get the cleaning odor out of the rugs. Can you roll the rug up and take it to a professional?
is that the voice of the Cardinal bird I hear from your porch? Miss those beauties! We're back in the Pacific NW.
You might consider this chair from Ikea: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60336839/
I have had one of these at my sewing desk and another at my telework desk for a few years now. They are comfortable enough to put a in full day's work and seem to hold up fairly well as well. At that price, you could buy one and try it out for yourself. They wheels are a little stiff, so they don't roll away on you. And the swivel action makes it easier to swivel away from the table and then stand. And they come without arms (or with, if you want).
My mother-in-law always used dry chemicals on her wool rug. She said water would shrink it.
