Quiltmaker’s 100 blocks, Vol 15!

Hey, everyone!

Welcome to my day on the Road Rally for Quiltmaker Magazine’s 100 blocks by 100 designers – VOLUME 15!!!

I am super excited as this makes my 14th consecutive issue.

Every issue has been a challenge.

And just as soon as we get done submitting for one issue, within a couple of months it’s time to turn on the thinking cap for what might be a good block idea for the next one.

And the competition gets steeper.

Now all blocks are submitted and reviewed before being accepted, and my goodness, what talented designers are out there designing their hearts out – FOR YOU!

Quiltmaker Magazine has also stepped up this whole blog tour process including MORE designers, more chances to win, more prizes and more fun!

If this is your first time visiting me, welcome!  My name is Bonnie Hunter, and I write the Addicted to Scraps column for Quiltmaker.

In every issue you’ll find a block pattern destined to help you fall in love with your scraps all over again.  Many of these blocks come from my own Scrap User’s System, playing with sizes of strips, squares and rectangles that work easily together, mixing and matching fabric lines, print types, genres, designers and manufacturers and playing by color family.

I publish my books under the Kansas City Star imprint of C&T Publishing.

I blog here daily, and when I am home not traveling and teaching, you’ll find me doing a live Quilt-Cam via Facebook Live that is later posted here on the blog and archived under the Quilt-Cam tab for easy reference.

I have a passion for vintage sewing machines and use and share them often.

There is always something scrappy going down in Quiltville!

My block, Sawtooth Flutter!

I love red and neutral quilts, and this exploding star variation captivated me! It all started with inspiration from an antique quilt found on my teaching travels, and I quickly ditched the Y seams in the original and designed this using flying geese and half chevrons, or in other words the infamous “diamond in a rectangle”  often found in our Quiltville mysteries.

I was also able to get ALL of these pieces out of my Scrap User’s System drawers of pre-cut strips, squares and rectangles.  TRIPLE BONUS!

How about 3 blocks in a simple table runner layout? Love it!

Now about that name…..SAWTOOTH FLUTTER?!?  Who’s big idea is THAT!?  I’m still laughing.

Because it goes like this – You submit a block, and give it some “normal” name like “Exploding Star” or “Starburst”  (Makes sense,  right?!) But if there has already BEEN a block called Exploding Star or Starburst in a previous issue, they have no choice but to rename it something else.  

And when the advance copies show up on your doorstep, and you see your beloved block on the cover – you give a whoop, quickly turn to your page in great anticipation and come face to face with your block which now has a name of “SAWTOOTH FLUTTER.”  LOL!

Which brings to mind the following:

OH NO!!! LOL!!

I love my Quiltmaker family.  What a hoot!

So here is where I need YOUR help.  I’m looking for a new name for this block as I intend to make a full quilt with it in the future – no teeth and no flutters included!  Please leave me a comment on what you think a good name would be for this fun block.

Speaking of Road Rally,  That’s exactly what I’m doing today.  I’m headed out the door on a road trip first up to Manassas, Virginia for a few days of workshop fun, and then I’ll be making a bee-line for Hagerstown, Maryland and then on to Linthicum and Glen Burnie, Maryland for several more days of workshops. 4 guilds, 4 lectures and 5 workshops.  Whew!

The van is packed.  I’m ready to go. 

My favorite thing to do on road trips?  Eat breakfast for dinner!  I swear, if I could own a restaurant, it would be BREAKFAST - all day, every day.
