The Road to North Wilkesboro!

20161223_160054
The sky was absolutely beautiful as we made our way toward the mountains I love so dearly.  Evening was on its way, the sun was reaching its lowest point before dipping over those blue ridge mountains, and the clouds were reflecting the rays.

So hard to capture with a phone camera through the windshield where I was riding shotgun, Sadie already snoozing and snoring in her very Sadie way in the back seat behind me.

We had just dropped off everything that could be filled and shipped before post office closing time.  We had stopped at our little Food Lion grocery store in Wallburg believing that the crowds would be more manageable at 4pm there, than at 5:30pm in Wilkesboro.

Everything we need for our Christmas weekend at Quilt Villa has been obtained.

Dining room mail mess!

Back of the van stuffed with outgoing goodies!

Invoice boxes 20 & 21 and most of 22 have SHIPPED!

And there was one special delivery yet to make.

Let’s hope Donna is HOME!

While we were busy packaging up Essential Triangle Tool and Addicted to Scraps Book bundle orders, The Hubster said “Hey!  This one is on our way –it’s in North Wilkesboro!  Do you want to make a surprise delivery?”  And I said yes.

As we pulled up into Donna’s drive way, I smiled at the Holiday decor brightening her yard.  I was so nervous coming up to the door!

What if she was in the middle of something?  What if she felt embarrassed and would have preferred the anonymity of a postal worker dropping this off the “normal” way?

“Knock knock.”

“bark bark bark bark bark……”

And the door opens!

“Are you Donna?” I ask?

“Yes…….?”

“I have a special Quiltville delivery for you!  We are on our way to the cabin, and you are on our way to the cabin, and I wanted to drop this off and wish you a Merry Christmas….”

And Donna, bless her heart threw the door open wide, and gave me the biggest hug!  She invited me in to meet her kids, her house decorated and lit and ready for a long holiday weekend with friends and family.

She showed me her sewing studio --- where she was busy stitching away on our En Provence mystery!

Thank you for welcoming me in, Donna!

I wish I had thought to ask if I could take photos in Donna’s sewing space.  Her hubby has made some adjustments to her cabinetry enabling her to stand and sew due to back issues.  And I thought…HOW BRILLIANT!  She can stand and sew here…and turn and press here…and she is in high production mode and it isn’t killing her back from too much sitting.

Now if only I could figure out to stand and treadle, we’d be in business!

Donna, making this one little side trip to bring you a little surprise really made MY Christmas that much sweeter.  I’m so happy to know you and know that you are close by when I come up here.  Merry Christmas to you and your family.

My evening of binding.

The string pumpkins are half-bound.  Jeff arrived shortly after we did, and we settled in to watch Home Alone while waiting for Jason and Jenny who were on their way up from South Carolina.  Perfection.

We spent up to bed time just sitting and talking with them, and over and over and over came the realization that life is unfolding as it should.  That even amidst the chaos, things are in order.  We’ve learned so much this past year.  We’ve grown as a family.  These two men-children of mine are amazing and watching them go off into their own lives fills me with wonder.

Clouds on the mountains.

Today it’s raining, and the clouds are low and hugging the mountain ridges.  It’s a perfect day for some cookie baking and just relaxing and enjoying each other.

If there is any quilting to happen, I’m thinking it’s a hand-work-only type of weekend because I can sit and enjoy everyone else and not be chained to a machine.

There will likely be very full bellies, and lots of nap taking.

And loads of quilt snuggling!

I’ve got Jingle Bell Square from the Addicted to Scraps book here and I love seeing it being used on the couch while we settle in to watch another round of Christmas movies.

As I sat here reading your post this early (4:00 am PST) Christmas morning, when I got to the part where you and your husband made a SPECIAL DELIVERY to one of the quilters who purchased the Essential Triangle Tool, I cried (and yes, I really did cry)! Oh Bonnie, YOU are the SPECIAL DELIVERY, far and above the tool that you dropped off. God Bless You and your family on this wondrous and most precious day of the year. You continue to amaze us all....
