Julie in Georgia!  Hooray!

Julie, I’ve sent you an email – get back to me with your snail mail info and I will pass it along to Quilty Box so they can send you your box!

I want to thank everyone for participating and making this such a fun thing to offer!

Some things on the blog do become a concern, and while it is all fun and games most of the time, there are times when I feel the need to play Ricky Ricardo and say

lucy

This evening I received the following email:

I noticed an advertisement on your blog you might think is a bit inappropriate.

I understand the ads are selected by an Internet advertising company and run there without your involvement, so I'm certainly not having a go at you, I just figured I'd want to know if someone was selling women on my blog (not that I have one).
Below is a screenshot. I'm in Australia, if that helps.
Without posting the screen shot for you, I was quite amazed, and astounded and definitely aghast when there, in plain sight were two ads stating “Find the Sweet Asian Woman you were meant to be with.”

Oh.  My.

The women were not scantily clad, nor was there anything pornographic about the ads, but I had to explain to the person who sent the email that the ads are based on their own personal browsing history, including those in her family who may also use that same computer.

It’s called Algorithms.

It’s the same thing that Facebook uses to place ads on your page, usually of something you have been looking at on eBay, or on Amazon or on any number of sites.

When I was looking for something to replace my fitbit…and searching online, for the next several days all of the things I looked at showed  up in the side bar of my blog, on Facebook, everywhere I went – there it was!

Even the Target pajamas followed me around for days….I found it quite funny.

Now I do not find it funny that someone in your household may have looked at ads of “Sweet Asian Women.”  But that has nothing to do with me, and there is nothing that I can do to make sure that these things do not pop up on your computer.

Seriously.  Have a talk with your family members or anyone who has been using your computer.  It’s not me.  It’s those who have used YOUR device.

What is showing for me right now are the pro-biotic supplements I looked up yesterday!  ((Do you really want to know about my intestinal health!?))

And that is all I have to say on that subject.

Have a good evening, Everyone!

Congrats to Julie. I noticed that the ads on FB show what I searched on Amazon too. LOL, TMI on your Digestive health...

Congrats Julie - as for the ads - like tv ads- I pretty well tune them out -but the explanation is good for those who don't know how it works

congrats to Julie-that box looks like fun on a bun!
the ads I love are the ones of the stuff I have on eBay to sell-it usually gives me the shot, and "last chance to bid on what you want" and I think, if I wanted it, I would have kept it, not put it up to sell on eBay, dummy!
that being said, at least I have never been offered sweet Asian women!
LOL!!!

Thanks for "Splaining"! I did notice lots of shelving units ads on my Yahoo home page when I was setting up my sewing area, but haven't paid much attention to those on FB. So. TX Jan

You rock....even when you're speaking on a serious subject. I had a similar situation when I got a astronomical phone bill because one of my teenaged sons clicked on a computer ad and it took him to some Caribbean Island back in the day when we used dial-ups through our phone lines. Someone in my house CERTAINLY did have a lot of 'splaing to do and explain he did. Oh those kids.....good thing you love 'em!

Thanks for offering the Quilty Box and your other give-aways. I always try and mayabe someday Lucky Loretta will get lucky. Meanwhile, I sure enjoy your blogs and tutorials.

I've noticed that my Amazon shopping follows me around on the internet. I wonder if disabling "cookies" might not help. Interesting to understand more about the web and how it works. The Quilty Box winner got lots of great goodies!

How funny, thank you for explaining, .i always wondered how the computer knew what I had been looking at. I'm safe only Quilty things. My girls told me that was why when you looked up airfares they got dearer every time you went to the site to check. Delete the cookies.

Interesting stuff about the ads. So I scrolled through your site to see what the ads were (I hadn't noticed initially), and they are for JCPenney and FiberOne cereal. I don't shop for clothes or food online, and no one else uses this computer. Wonder how that worked?

Well, that explains why all the ads are for quilting things!!! How embarrassing to have that other kind of stuff appear...good thing I don't share my computer with my hubby...I would have to look at farm equipment or hunting stuff!!

If their wifi isn't secure, who knows who has been using their system for sketchy viewing? Or maybe unsecured public wifi is to blame? It may not be her family?

I'm chuckling about the ad information at the end of your post today. Can't help myself. Thinking of a teen boy looking around the net on mom's laptop. LOL
