Holy Hexie Day!

20150427_185220
I returned home from getting my new pair of glasses –and dropping off the book orders to the post office, and making a run through the bank, and Fed Ex….

Little did I know when I returned home I would find a box stuffed full of…

VINTAGE! HEXIE! GOODNESS!!

No one ever expects these things…and when it happens, I am just so overcome!

This box came with a story:

I can’t tell if it is blocks or just parts at this point!

The note reads:
Dear Bonnie,

I don’t know who would appreciate these hexagon blocks more than you.  They were given to my mom 30 years ago because she was a quilter and would know what to do with them!
20150427_185135

Rows of blocks, and single blocks too!
I follow you religiously and know your fondness for all things scrappy, vintage and hexagon.  These certainly cover ALL bases!

Individual blocks, close up!
Feel Free to pass them on  ((Ahem!! NO WAY!)) store them, or play with them any way you please.  It’s my thank you for all you do!

Close up of rows!

Back sides!  With papers still basted in place on outer edges!

See you in June in Western NY – My First Bonnie Class!

Sincerely,
Mary L.S.

Singles with fun papers!

Look at them all!  Oh, the possibilities!

PS –Look at those stitches!!
Oooooeeeee!  I have no idea how the original maker ((who is not named anywhere)) was planning on setting these rows…I’ll have to play with them and see what is what, and see if I can figure it out.

The UPSIDE? English paper piecing means it will be easy to replicate the hexagon shape she was using, size –etc….so it would work for me to assemble these together.  She used what feels like plain utility muslin.

I wish I knew the story behind all of these wonderful dress prints.  Were they leftovers from making clothing?  Were they shared bits from friends?

Good thing I’ve got new glasses…I see a lot of hand work in my future!

Yep, it’s good to see!

They may look similar to my other ones, and they are but the lenses are a different shape.  And better yet, my bifocal prescription is stronger so I can see to thread needles…this is good!

And I know you can’t tell from the photo, but the best gift to myself from my trip to Maine ---LOBSTAH earrings…fun!

Gonna go study these papers some more – maybe there is a date in here somewhere?

Have a great evening, everyone!

Bonnie, if you look at your pictures with the rows of hexagon flower blocks, can you see that if you put these rows together using colored hexies you would see diamonds of colored hexies and then the flower blocks?? Too fabulous for words. Lucky you!!! Carolyn Barnett csbbobbin@yahoo.com

Kudos to the wonderful donor and looking forward to hearing more about how the vintage hexie story develops. Their life is not yet over. :-)

Bonnie, I need new glasses like yours. Where did you find them? Can only find round ones, which I don't like.

I have GOT to ask! What weight are the papers in those hexagons? They look like newspaper clippings!

Have fun!!

Oh Bonnie you are just so blessed.....I love the new White brand turquoise sewing machine, it goes so beautifully with the new 4 patch cross you are working on.
And those wonder vintage hexies, cannot wait to see what you come up with on them. Have a blessed day, and cannot wait for quilt cam. Markay from Ky.

How fitting. I've recently been bitten by the hexie bug! I found an old hexie quilt top my mom made with lovely vintage fabrics. I'm trying my hand at hexie now. They are very additive.

Love the hexie blocks you were given, you're a lucky girl. very deserving though. You do so much for the quilting community and keep us in projects and keep making us want to make more and do more. They would look great with a solid old fashioned color putting them together maybe. I am sure whatever you do with them, they will be perfect. I am working on Carolina chain in repro scraps. It's looking good. Safe travels and love seeing the smile on your face.
