Galaxy-Gram! Glasses Disaster!

I was just cleaning my glasses and this happened.

Just simply wiping them dry and the welding came apart at the nose piece.

I am completely blind without my glasses and my bifocal lenses.

I fly to Maine on Friday and I sure hope that I can find a place to fix this in a hurry.

It looks like my plan to stay up at the cabin until tomorrow has been curtailed and I am making a beeline to the closest optical place, which is back in Winston Salem.

My prescription is out of date, I'm going to need an eye exam and I doubt I can get one on the fly.

One thing I do know - I can't stay here in quilt because I cannot see!

The upside? I am farsighted so I am okay to drive.

Time to grab a shower, pack it up and head to town.

I can't believe this bad luck!

Walmarts that have vision centers can usually do an eye exam on a walk-in basis.

In Winston Salem, this Walmart has a vision center, you might give them a call...

Oh no! That is NOT "funny" "interesting", or "cool". So sorry. I had the same thing happen to me last year. I was without my vision for about a week - no fun!

What bad timing. Sounds like you need to leave some cheap readers at the villa!

LensCrafters are also fairly easy to get into for an eye exam and glasses can be ready in an hour.

Sorry this happened to you. Hubby is blind without his glasses which is why when he gets a new pair and prescription the old pair gets put in the glove box of the truck. We always have a spare to go to in an emergency and better yet they are easy to find. In this case when you get a new RX it might be worth having your lenses put in another frame and carried with you when you travel. Can't always rely on an optical place being open when we need them.

LensCrafters, glasses in an hour, they all have optometrists next door

I had the same thing happen a year ago and I went to Walmart and found a frame that fit my lenses and voila...that is by far the easiest IF you can find an inexpensive frame.

Ouch! M y trifocals are getting older and I worry about having a back up pair. I hope you find a quick fix!

I know what you mean Bonnie...I tell my husband I can't even hear without my glasses on...things are so fuzzy that it's hard to "focus" or think...when I put my glasses on, I can see who is talking to me and the world is good...what ever happened to 20/20???

Actually good luck, they broke at home where you know what is available and not just before you were boarding the plane or in class. Darn lucky I'd say. :)

Oh, baby, my heart breaks for you. I'm so dependent on mine. I always keep my old ones handy, just in case. They might not be perfect, but in a pinch will do. Maybe you can find a 2-fer deal at the optical place. Meanwhile, a bandaid with a toothpick splint may be in order. Too bad Hermione Granger isn't around....

Can you tell what I'm listening to while working on english paper piecing project?

If all else fails, you may be able to do an emergency repair yourself with JB Weld...an epoxy compound available at hardware stores, that's easy to use and truly welds. An old farmer told me about the product and said they even use it to repair tractors! It will get you through until new glasses come in. Another possibility is that the optical place will be able to do a temporary weld repair. When the nose pad structure broke off my glasses, an optical place did that for me, and it wasn't even where I bought the glasses.

I always keep my last pair of glasses just in case this happens; I leave it in my suitcase, so I won't forget it if I go on a trip. As I get new pairs, I remove the old-old one and donate it to the Lions. Fingers crossed that this has a quick fix. Maybe they can put the lenses into a frame that they have on the premises.

I don't have an answer for your eyeglass dilemma but I do have a lot of sympathy for you in that regard Blind as the proverbial bat without my glasses and I have tried contacts but without luck. You seem to be having a REAL streak of bad luck lately (sick, snowed in problems, broken glasses). Prayers that this phase is over for you! Linda

This is why I buy two pair when I get a new prescription. The second pair has paid for themselves many times over. I hope you find someplace to repair the glasses if you can't get an eye exam today. Sam's Club is fantastic for emergency glasses problems.

Bonnie, I feel your pain. I have similar frames to yours that broke when I was visiting my daughter in Virginia. That was the first and last trip I took without a spare pair! Found a shop to repair them and the repair lasted till my next exam. Good luck! Thinking positive thoughts! See you in May in Alaska! Joy

such a bummer, this happened to me while on vacation in AZ. It was awful. Did find a frame that fit my lenses, although not perfectly, but it got me home. I will be seeing you for your Monday lecture. Yea!!!!!

So sorry to see your broken glasses. I have an appointment tomorrow and this has reminded me to get a prescription in hand even if I don't have any change. Hope u get them repaired with no problem.

Go to Walmart. They can do the exam and everything. It's always something

For future reference, I always have a back-up pair, and I get my glasses from Zenni's online. I've been using them for three years, and I love paying only $125 for a pair of progressive bifocals. I figure at that price, I can have several in different colors!

I use Walmart and have been very pleased with them. I don't like to shop there but for glasses it has been a great experience.

Lens Crafters will be able to make new glasses for you (if you need to) in about 3 hours.

Glad to read that you were able to get them fixed. You need to make that helpful optician a quilt! LOL

QuiltinLibraryLady said...

You should be able to get them repaired so you can wear them until you get your new glasses. Once you have the new ones order another pair from Zenni Optical online. They will be much less expensive & make a good backup. Just be sure you get a copy of your prescription including the PD measurement. The numbers for your frame size should be imprinted on the inside of the bows for your glasses.

Fixing frames are easier than puppy teeth on brand new lenses.....lets just say that a certain spotted boy decided my glasses were a delicacy and he got them not once, not twice but 3 times! I'm SO glad that he outgrew that obsession. I'm pretty sure you will be able to get them fixed up quickly.

Duct tape???

Linda said...

You can have your current lenses put into new frames to fix the urgent need, and have your eye exam later. Then you can have your new prescription lenses put into the same frames.

Sounds like a "duck tape" project!!!

Bonnie the best thing it happened at or near your home.... go to Walmart or lenscrafter they can do the exam and glasses in a hurry.

So sorry about your glasses! Maybe this will help you (not this time) but maybe the next time this happens: I recently broke my glasses on a trip of town no less, but in less than 5 minutes I was wearing an identical pair and telling my DH, "Sometimes it's great to be a prepper!" I had bought 2 extra pairs by mail at zennioptical.com for less than $60 ea. even though they are progressives and normally very expensive. Just type in your RX info online and make sure you can read your Dr's handwriting!

As someone who is as "blind" as you are without my glasses, I totally sympathize with you!
Also just wanted to mention that you need to go to FaceBook to Diana's Golden Needle page to see the beautiful work she is doing for her Girl Scout Gold Award using, with prior permission from you, one of your patterns "Scrappy Trip Around the World. Her story is special …and she is a very special young lady!

If you have them out east, 'America's Best Eyecare Centers' are suberb!!! Eye exam and not one but TWO pair of glasses fof $59.95. Can't beat that. Good luck to you. Remember, EVERYTHING happens for a reason although at the time we certainly don't understand why.

Awful! Nothing worse than your glasses breaking at a crucial time. Don't you have contacts? By the way, www.trioo.us offers 30% off for anyone who breaks their glasses. I'm pretty sure their code for the broken glasses discount is 'TriooBrokenToken'. I know this because I just broke my glasses too! 30% off of $97 for titanium glasses that arrived in 5 days, can't beat that! Just an FYI. Cheers and good luck!

I broke my nose piece and like you can't read without bifocals. This was about 25 years ago when only few places made glasses in one day. My dear husband left town, I got new glasses and he suggested that I needed to quit holding my glasses by the nose piece to clean them because the pressure would eventually cause them to snap. He was so smart. Do miss his guiding me through many situations with great logic. Thanks for the memories.

My glasses fell apart as I was walking INTO the airport for an extended trip. There was a shop selling sunglasses who fixed them for me--at no cost AND i didn't miss my flight and could see. Those glasses were terrible and after having them repaired three times, I bought a new pair even though my prescription was still new.

Been there done that one too. In Sierra Vista AZ for the winter - had to call my Glasses place in San Antonio and pay through the nose to get the eye piece - rotten luck Lady.

Hang in there - things come in 3's Isn't this the 3rd thing in the last month or so? Snow, Cold and now Glasses. Uphill from now on!
