Mackinac By Air!

Mackinac_May2014 024
Hey everyone!

Today was a hectic day of leaving the house at 5:15am to catch a flight from Greensboro to Detroit --

A 3 hour layover in Detroit waiting for a flight to Pellston ---

A shuttle ride from Pellston to St Ignace ---

And a prop job 4 seater plane ride to Mackinac Island from St Ignace ---Yes, this is me by that small little plane that took us on the 5 minute flight around Mackinac Island and set us down where a horse drawn taxi took us and our luggage for a ride --

Followed by…..checking into to the Grand Hotel for a much needed nap!

We are meeting up with everyone in about 20 minutes for dinner and will be discussing the run down of the Needlework Seminar here ---My classes start Saturday and I need to know where my classroom is – I need to get the cases of books and other supplies (that I hope have arrived) to my classroom before set up time.

All this while being in the coolest hotel in all the word...the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island!

With no time to sit and edit photos, I uploaded all of my “By air” photos into a slide show for your viewing pleasure!  Pardon me if there are any duplicates, I’ll scale down the album later.

Click the image below if you can’t view the slide show on your mobile device.  You’ll be taken to the photo album for viewing.

I am so glad to be here, down jacket, scarf, hat, gloves -- and a whole gaggle of quilters about to arrive!

Bonnie - Cool! You got to drive across the bridge AND see the Straits and island from the air. Any freighters?

Have a GRAND time on Fudge Rock! (maybe it's too early in the season for the famous fudge shops to be open?)

How did you do on that little plane? My stomach doesn't like those very much :(

I got to stay there in 1962 when I was in 5th grade. There was 6 kids at a convention with our parents. It was September so it wasn't crowded and you are right, it is a very cool place to stay. Enjoy!

I have never stayed at the hotel but I do remember a day trip to the island with the family when I was about 10.... no cars was very different.... and riding in a wagon with the horses was way cool.

My hubster trained student pilots in this plane.! Me, I am no fan of flying.... go figure married to a pilot. Have a great time. Looks like some place we will have to visit some time.

Hey Bonnie!! I instantly recognized your first two pics that you took of the Detrot River! The large island on the right is Grosse Isle that tapers into Hennepin Point on the left. The small island on the left is Grassy Island and above that the larger Fighting Island. The river in the top right is River Canard. You flew right over my house like most of the planes do when leaving Detroit Metro - we live close to the mouth of Lake St Clair on the Canadian side, at the other end of the Detroit River. Enjoy Mackinac Island - I will see you at the Great Lakes Heritage Quilters meeting in Bloomfield Hills on May 8th!!

This is so exciting! I can hardly believe you get to have a whole week at the Grand Hotel. The first sight of it coming over from Mackinaw City always makes my heart flutter! Pictures - lots of pictures! And just have a royal good time!

Have a great time. I am so glad you are able to accomplish something on your bucket list. Our daughter works on the island and the hotel she works at opens today. If you have some free time take a little stroll down through the town. It is a beautiful place to be. And enjoy at least one Grand Pecan Ball while at the Grand. Pam - from a class in Pigeon Forge

Wish I was there with you, cold or not! Being from Michigan I've been to the island many times. It's always been one of my favorite places to visit. Looking forward to the day I can take my kids up there! Have a great trip!

Enjoy your time! I was there in 2000 for my Honeymoon! Did not stay at the Grand Hotel but in a nice B&B down closer to the docks. Enjoy the tranquility and the clip clop of horses' hooves, if you can.

Did you notice the ice still on the lake up there? And after reading all the comments, Debbie P must live right by my house at the mouth of the Detroit River in Canada. Interesting! Anyway, have a great time on the Island and keep warm!

Mackinaw is the BEST! from a michigan native! Too bad it's cold...there are a couple few short nice months there. Try to bike around the island if you can. Don't forget the fudge! Have a pasty! Wonderful stuff!
