Tying the Knot by Linda Hubalek is currently FREE on Amazon. Click HERE to order!
Tying the Knot, the first historical fiction book in the Kansas Quilter series follows Kizzie Pieratt as she receives trunks and quilts from her relatives to use on her family’s wagon trip from Kansas to the Indian Territory.
Kizzie learns about the significant moves previous generations have made for their families, just like she is about to do next.
This book series shares the stories and photos of Linda Hubalek’s pioneer ancestors that homesteaded in Kansas in the 1800s. The Kansas Quilter series continues the family stories written in Hubalek’s Trail of Thread series.
I just downloaded it myself and it was free when I did, but double check before clicking that it is still free for you because these things can change without notice.A bonus section tells the "Story behind the story" of the Kansas Quilter series and features photos of some of the quilts that the Pieratt family made.
This is how I will always remember my mama ---
Funny hat, garden hose in hand, making the world around her as beautiful as it can be.
There is a sign on her front porch that says:
“Without hard work, nothing grows but weeds….”
And sometimes I feel like that applies to areas of my life too –yes, it’s hard work, but it’s worth it.
It’s not an easy job to tame these seemingly unusable scraps and turn them into quilts, it’s a lot easier to sew with bigger pieces that already match each other –but this is the way I prefer to work and the reward is so great.
Her hard work pays off!
Last evening, we lit a fire in the fire pit and sat around and talked and laughed and reminisced as the hot dogs cooked on long forks over the flames.
Yummy!
We’ve always had a fire pit for outdoor cookouts….I remember a time when my brother Mike had a marshmallow catch on fire, and he flung it --- it landed in my hair a sticky mess, good thing the fire had extinguished by the time it landed! We always laugh and joke about this so may decades later. We’ll be at Mike’s house for a BBQ tomorrow for Memorial Day – he better watch out when it is MY TURN to fling a marshmallow!
My step dad, Gary, and my mom…..
Mmmmmmm Marshmallows! The best taste at the end of the day!
This was the only time there has just been three of us on a holiday around the fire pit ---everyone is scattered all different directions and I felt their absence even while enjoying our small gathering.
We’ve had a very relaxing day just talking and laughing – I even got mom to watch my episode of The Quilt Show! That was extra fun.
We’ve taken a hike up the mountain, visited with neighbors, and have a potato salad under way for tomorrow’s BBQ at Mike’s.
Our evening is around the bend, we’ll be grilling pork chops and serving them with sweet potatoes and a salad – simple fare for a simply wonderful holiday weekend.
And there are more hexies while talking ---
Love from Idaho!

Thanks for the heads up for the free Amazon book. I was able to upload mine for free also. Visiting Idaho is on my bucket list of things to see. Hopefully one day...
I am sooooo happy that you are spending this time with your family, Bonnie ... I had tears (seriously) in my eyes after I read your latest entry. Your mom is a beautiful person; you can see her inside beauty in that smile! Happy Memorial Day!!
a well deserved break from your very busy schedule
Sounds perfectly relaxing :0).
Did your Mom think you were a natural on the Quilting Show? I think you did a great job :0)
My Mom and I had a difficult relationship and it never got better even though I always wanted it to.
It is so nice to see a mother /daughter loving relationship.
Happy Sewing to you both this evening
What fun to be able to spend time with your family. Your mom sounds like a wise lady. Enjoy the marshmallows!
Sounds like the best time! Enjoy!
I watched your Quilt Show program today, and really enjoyed it. You did a great job. Enjoy the rest of the weekend with your family.

Enjoy time with your family!!! BTW, the book was still free as of 6:40PM PDT.
Bonnie, what a wonderful opportunity to spend with your mom. You two seem so much alike - wonderful, caring, sharing, and talented people. Your mom's smile is wonderful. Enjoy your time together as we all know it passes way too quickly. I, too, was able to watch you on The Quilt Show and really enjoyed it. Congratulations on a job very well done.
I totally agree about the hard work with quilting. I am still fairly new to the designing business but all the hard work has paid off. I really have to "sell myself" sometimes which doesn't come easily but if I want to be a success at this I need to do that sometimes. So I get a tad irritated when people say "you're so lucky" - luck really doesn't play a role here - hard work does!
Thanks for the heads up of that book for the Kindle. I got it also. So glad you have gotten these few days with your Mom in her beautiful mountain home.
Ooh! Thank you for the info on the free book! I got one for my kindle. I had a wonderful day with my own mother, too!
Thanks for the info Bonnie, I too got the book free here in Australia. Sounds like you are having a wonderful time, you resemble your Mum even more with the new hairdo.
Bonnie, why do you call the short hair on your forhead a 'bang'? We call it a fringe, but its not a you are right I am wrong, question or vice versa, it has me a bit puzzled, that's all.
Here in Aus. a bang is not a nice thing, it is rude and crude. I like to know the origins of sayings, just my curious nature I guess.
Love from W.Aust.
Thanks for the heads up on the book. Got it. You and your mom look alike. Beautiful both of you. Fun fun fun.
Thanks for the info on the free book which I immediately downloaded. You and your Mom have the same beautiful smile.

Finished "Tying the Knot" - a quick read, but I love stories that give a peek into everyday life in our past.
So glad you are spending the holiday with your mother after not being able to physically be with her for three years. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy--Mother's do have an expiration date and it's really sad when that date arrives.
I so enjoy your blog and your sense of humor.
So glad someone's comment reminded me to watch you on The Quilt Show. I think you did a superb job, looked very comfortable. Thanks.
Your mama is so cute! You surely are your mother's daughter. So good you can have this special time together, making treasured memories.
You look just like you mama. She is so cute. Enjoy. I lost my mama 10 years ago, too soon for sure. Looks like you are having a great time. I wear funny hats in the yard too. Love their place. It is so neat. We lived in Coeur d' Alene, ID for 3.5 years and loved it there. The free book at Amazon is still free. I had to download the Kindle app to my iPad but it was worth it. Thanks for sharing this. I love quilting novels and have 6 different series of them. Enjoy the rest of your holiday with your family. I watch you Quilt Show last night and really enjoyed it. You did very well. Good job.. Betty
Hopefully it won't be three years until you see your mom again.
With all your travelling and frequent flyer miles, surely you can squeeze a visit in more often.
Time together is so precious.
I missed it on the FREE time but $3.99 isn't too much for a Kindle book. Thanks for the link. Enjoy the rest of your Week-end. My DD #2 is driving through Boise area tomorrow on her way Home! She's Moving Home! Nothing like the Mother Daughter relationship!
Sounds like you are relaxing and enjoying yourself. Marshmallows have to be the quint essential summer campfire food(with chocolate of course). It was a relaxing evening of hexies at my house too!
I can see where you get your beautiful smile. I'm so glad you've been able to take a time out from your busy life and let your Mama pamper you for awhile.
Oh Bonnie, the pix of your mom in her hat in the garden looks exactly like you! Sounds like you're having a wonderful time. Enjoy!
Tks for the heads up on the book. Enjoyed the TQS video. And tks for sharing your good time with your Mom, et al. She's a good one! It is wonderful that you are able to have the 'time out'. Enjoy, Enjoy!
So glad you got some special time with your family. Everyone needs to reconnect with the ones they love and hold dear.
