***NOTE*** This Give-Away has ended!! Contracts to pdudgeon!!
Have you watched Why Quilts Matter?
The series has aired on PBS and has been featured on The Quilt Show, but we're still trying to get the word out to quilters. All proceeds of the series go back to the non-profit Kentucky Quilt Project to fund future quilt projects.
In 2011, thirty years since its founding, The Kentucky Quilt Project, Inc., has created another “first” – a nine-part documentary series titled Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics. The series takes a fresh look at quilts and spreads the word about their unique position at the center of a startlingly broad grid of topics, ranging from women’s studies to the contemporary art market.
"Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics" is the landmark nine-part documentary series that offers a fresh, relevant exploration of quilts. Why was this series created? Check out this video interview with Shelley Zegart below!
This fascinating series explores quilts in fresh new ways by taking you behind the scenes to reveal the unique position of quilts at the center of American culture. You'll go on an amazing quilt journey from function to art, to women's empowerment, economic clout, American politics and beyond.
"This compelling and visually rich series convinces us that quilts do matter. VERDICT: This wonderful series would be an important addition for all museums, libraries and quilt guilds."

I would love to have this to share with our local quilt groups and then give it a safe home at our local library so that it can be shared with others.
I would like to watch this series and maybe donate it to my quilt group
Quilting is my therapy and keeps me company. Nothing like a big quilt hug from grandma for my grandsons.
Quilts matter to me for so many reasons, including connection, creativity, and expression of love for the person I am making the quilts for.
What a wonderful series! Thank you for your terrific website!
I remember visiting my grandparents on their farm in North Carolina when I was growing up, and there were always TONS of quilts piled high all over the place. My grandmother and aunt always quilted in their spare time off from cooking, canning, freezing food, and running a house of nine kids! I sure wish I had just one of those quilts, the one I remember most was sunbonnet sue!

I am the 4th generation quilter in our family. Quilts matter to me because of the creativity quilting allows me to express. I love all aspects of quilting: the planning, the piecing, the quilting, and most of all the giving.

Quilting is the relaxation and and quiet contemplation time in my life. I have started the quilting tradition in my family; my mother gave me my avarice for needlepoint and my grandmother crocheting - which I rarely do anymore. But my children (and hopefully my grand-daughter) appreciate the quilts I make and are extending their artistic likes more and I have seen more acceptance in them for the different quilts I create. I would love to have this series as a way to learn and teach my brood about why quilts are important.

Quilts provide connection for me; connection to myself as an artist, connection to my friends in memory of time spent together making quilts;connection to the receiver of the quilt. And with the size of my stash---connection to the future; plenty of supplies and time to spend making more quilts! Nell nellsheartstrings@yahoo.com
Hi Bonnie
This is a great giveaway. Quilting has been a part of my life since I was 16. My Mother did not sew but my Mother-in-law did. She taught me how to hand piece and hand quilt and I have had a project (or more) going ever since. I will be celebrating my 45th wedding anniversary this summer, along with quilting that long, as well. I love quilts!
crazyquilter@twc.com
When I am quilting I feel a connection to a Grandmother whom I never knew. She died before I was born. Members of my family tell me that I remind them of her because, out of all the grandchildren, I am the only one who inherited her crafty traits. I lose myself when I am quilting and all of lifes problems fade into the background. I feel good about sharing my love of quilting with my family and being able to leave behind a piece of my heart when I am no longer on this earth.

I was a part of that process of helping our Homemaker club sponser a day where we looked at quilts that people brought to us. We had papers for them to fill out and tell us about the quilt. It was quite a great day to see all the quilts and help with this project!
Quilting has been a generational activity for my family. Like so many, my sister and I were taught to make nine patch blocks from our feed sack scraps and clothing scraps. We continue to quilt and take great satisfaction in making quilts for charity purposes. We have encouraged our daughters and granddaughters to continue the satisfying hobby.
Quilts matter because throough Quilting I have made some wonderful friends and memories. I didn't have a mother or grandmother who quilted--but I am working with my granddaughter so that someday she will be able to appreciate the love and caring that goes into it. Enjoyed seeing the history of quilts through this series.
There are many reasons why quilts matter, but lately... after 14 years of quilting, I realize that every quilt has a story. And a purpose. Heirloom, or simple couch snuggler... there's a story. I love quilting.
Quilts are a tangible way of showing someone you love them. Hopefully, they will treasure your gift and have fond memories of having that item, which was made especially for them. yoyopattycakes@hotmail.com
Quilts matter because they are an extension of me, of my family. of my history. My pieces are not always perfect but then neither am I. They layers of the quilt are the generations of my famuly with the threads that hold them together being our customs and traditions. Quilts are like family, they wrap themselves around you to protect you from the storms of life and during easy times, they adorn your home,as a family adorns your life. Quilts matter because I matter. lmlandis@epix.net
Quilts matter because they hold all the love of family quilted into them. Family quilts get passed down through families so the love is passed as we'll.
Quilts matter because everyone can relate to them in one way or another!
Quilts matter to me as a way to share with others my love of color and texture . . . the puzzle of putting it together makes it fun!
I think quilts matter because they are a testament of your love and time.
I haven't seen the documentary. I think if I won it, after watching it, I'd donate it to my library.
Quilts are a way to pass love from generation to generation. I slept under a quilt that had been my Dad's made probably by his aunt and grandmother until it frayed into oblivion. My great niece sleeps under a quilt made from her great grandmother's dresses that was made by her great great grandmother and her great great great grandmother. I hope the loved ones I have made/are making quilts for will love using them as much as I loved making them.
Quilts really DO matter ...to us quilters, our families, our legacy...
Quilting has been a large part of most of my adult life. I can't imagine my world without it. It is a source of comfort and relaxation for me and also allows me to give back to the community, etc. thank you for being such an inspiration.
Hi Bonnie, I would like to see this series. Thanks for doing the give away.
Pat
dvrich@bellsouth.net
Quilts matter to both the maker and the receiver. I as a maker enjoy the process of controlling the design, colors and texture of the the quilt. The receiver gets to enjoy my creation - either by hanging it or snuggling under it!
What a great series, hadn't heard about it. It is SO important to remember, document and celebrate all parts of history as those who can speak to it will some day be gone. We need these tangible reminders and information to pass on. As you said recently, labelling the quilt is important, history in the making. I grew up with embroidery, crafts and quilting was wholecloth pieces or tied utility ones to sleep under, and there were group projects to send to countries in need. Thanks for this chance.

I love to quilt. I belong to a very active guild. Blessings.
As a formwer Elementary Social Studies teacher and a Civil War buff, I am immersed in quilting and its relevance... Bonnie, I have just finished my second king sized quilt of yours since 2 of your classes, starting last spring...you are such an inspiration w/your love of quilts and history that we are all devoted followers! Linda Hartman lhartman1@comcast.net
I love to quilt and I belong to a very active quilt guild. Blessings.
Quilts matter to me because they give me a wonderful sence of accomplishment. They also give me a way to show family and friends how much I value them.
My mother never quilted. My grandmother made quilts, but I was too young to know anything about them. My mother-in-law quilted. I always wanted to learn how to quilt. I waited until I retired to take classes. I quilt off and on. I think quilting is important, and it brings such joy to the maker and the person receiving the quilt.
Quilts matter to me because they are full of hope, love and joy all of which the creator and recipient feel at some point in the life of a quilt.
Quilts make me happy!
nadia.taylor@me.com
Quilts do matter to me! They are my chance to bring a little beauty and joy to the world - one quilt at a time! Not only for the quilts I make, but also for the quilts my customers bring me to quilt for them - and the joy they express when they pick them up. Laurie
It would be fabulous to watch this while working on quilts! Great giveaway...thank you :-)
Wow! I have been trying to get this through inter-library loan, so having a copy of my own would be terrific! Quilts matter to me as a way to show my love to my family and friends. Thanks for all you do to promote quilting, not just as a hobby but as a lifestyle. I am still working on step one of CS but I love how my colors are playing together, so I know I'll finish it...someday!

Quilts matter because they bring together groups of individuals who share a common bond and have done that for many generations. Where would we be without our quilt friends. Thanks for the chance to win.
I am currently watching these videos which I borrowed from my local library. They are VERY good - wonderful, wonderful series. Thanks for the chance to win a copy!

I watched most of the episodes on PBS when they aired and they were awesome. I would love to win and share the entire series with my quilt friends. Thank you for your giveaway offer.
P.S. I am addicted to QuiltCam. RitaAnne
I first saw it on TQS, then I borrowed it from a friend, and I just got it for Christmas. I watch each episode over and over!
Quilts matter to me because I never considered myself creative until I began making them. I now keep my family warmer, give wonderful gifts to friends, and earn some money to help with bills. You could say my life revolves around quilts, and that's why they matter to me.
Quilts matter because they link the past with the present. The pattern, fabrics, colors, borders, binding, etc.. all tell a story. Quilts might be made to mark a special occasion, for utilitarian purposes, or just to please the quilter. They tell the history of our lives.
Thank you for the opportunity to win this series!
lisamcouey@yahoo.com
I love quilts because they are beautiful & an individual expression of the quilter. I would love to get the series. Thanks. Jackie
Quilts matter to me because they are a way that I can show others how I feel at a certain point in time and can pass on a piece of the actual "me" to my family or friends. This seems to be a wonderful series. Thanks for offering it to us.
Quilts matter to me because they are a way of being able to put my arms around family members when we are far apart.
Quilts matter because I feel a piece of you goes with the finished quilt wherever it lands. So much blood, sweat, and tears, plus a whole lot of love, go into our quilts, they HAVE to matter.
Anyway, I desperately want to win this video as I have wanted it since it aired originally. Thanks for the drawing! tamkrumwiede at hotmail dot com
Quilts have become an important part of my life that connect me with the world around me. I am connected to family who came before me, to the creativity I enjoy expressing, to quilters who share the love of quilting, and to the community that I give back to through donations of quilts to charity groups. Quilting is a hobby that provides an outlet on sew many levels!
My fascination with quilting began as a little girl when I visited my Grandmother and she had her quilting frame hanging from the ceiling in the dining room. I have a quilt she made for me which I treasure. My hope is that future generations will treasure the quilts I make and their link to the past.
Carol ccarrott@charter.net
I love history and it's about time to give some credence to this history of what women have contributed to our country. They're not just pretty blankets! Women made them to contribute to the well-being of families, to provide for loved ones, to be seen as partners in the home. It was important then, and it's still important even though we can buy anything now. Plus it's a creative outlet and a satisfying craft!
Quilts were imprinted on me when I spent many a night under the heavy ones my grandmother, Missy, made. They were wool and cotton left over from clothes and feed sacks, had newspaper in them, and the batting had the cotton seeds in it as well. My grandparents grew cotton and, I think, the batting came from their fields. I made my first quilt 39 years ago and haven't stopped since. Quilts mean family, cozy, history, and a connection with my past.
Quilting "grounds" me. I love the order of piecing and assembling quilts and then giving some of those quilts to people I love.
Quilts matter because they are one of the few physical items left over from your female ancestors. Even if an antique quilt isn't from your own ancestor, it is from someone else's grandmother or great-grandmother. Today, the value of quilts is two-fold...they are both practical and are an expression of our creativity.

Quilts matter because if you sleep under a quilt, the 'things that go bump in the night' cannot get you. At least, that is what I thought in my creaky farmhouse growing up. Carol.antley@gmail.com
Quilts matter to me because it is a way to gift someone a piece of my heart! As long as they have the quilt, they will know I cared enough to take the time to make something JUST for THEM!
Diane
I saw some of the episodes and they were great. I would like to show them to my bee and guild.
hinesdiane@sbcglobal.net
Quilts embrace us in warmth, love, and tradition. As a scrappy quilt lover and maker I love taking what most would consider worthless and creating a beautiful masterpiece with much thought and prayers for many times an unknown recipient. An expression of hearts and times in which we live. Knowing that each and every quilt is unique as the individual that created it. Thanks again Bonnie for sharing the opportunity to win. duwaklj@cloudburst9.net
Quilts matter because they reflect the love that we feel for the recipient. They are tangible reminders of the maker and hold all of the prayers and hopes that the maker has for their loved one. Even charity quilts, when we don't know the recipients, hold blessings. I pray as I sew and ask God to care for my loved ones when I will no longer be here to hold them.
My great grandmother was reportedly one of the best handquilters in her area. I never saw any of her quilts (they all disappeared at her death) but as a child I remember the ceiling hooks in the living room that held her loom. I'll never match her skills but I can still enjoy making quilts
just like she did.
PatCH qfanon@aol.com
Quilting allows me to wrap my children and grandchildren in warmth and my love.
Quilts matter because they are a part of us. We create a piece of art that is our heart and soul.
Thank you for sharing this with others....getting the word out!
Quilts matter to me because it is a way to express my creativity in a practical and enduring way. As a young mother of 4 small children, it was the one thing in my life that stayed done. Now that my children are grown in is a way to express love and connection with others. Quilting challenges me, soothes me, and elevates me!
I love to learn the history of quilts - all quilts. Would love to win!! aurora at louaurora@yahoo.com
Hi Bonnie,
Quilts matter in our family because they are a legacy from one generation to another. My grandchild won't remember if there was dog hair on my floor because I quilt instead of clean, but he will remember me by the quilts and the stories they tell.
Janet
I would love to watch these and be inspired!
Always interested in the history of quilting and the women artists. Thank you for this opportunity. I love all that you do for the quilters around the world.
Quilts matter for the connection they make between generations. Not just the generation that has made the quilt, but for the future generations that will enjoy the time spent in piecing and quilting it. Lots of love passed from one generation to the next.
Quilts matter because they document all the love, necessity and shear joy of having a quilt. Especially if the quilt was made by a family member of years ago. Looks like an interesting series and I would love to win a copy of the dvds. Thanks for the chance to win. sandi1100@yahoo.com
Is it even a queastion, why quilt matter?
The quilts I make connect me to the person using them. How wonderful to get something that required time to do in the age of email, textmessages and computers.
All the younger kids in my extended family kind of intrinsically understand this and ask me "when will you do something for me again?"
Also, quilting, its symmetry and the monotone humm of a sewing maschine relaxes me in the evening after work.
Quilts matter to me because they connected me with relatives that are no longer alive except in my heart and those that are still living. Quilts connect me to people I would never know if I didnt quilt, such as yourself and all my quilt buddies in the guild...making quilts fills a need , the choosing of the pattern, the choice of fabric...touching it, enjoying the beauty of it, the sense of accomplishment when it it is "FINISHED" . The joy quilts bring to me when I give them to family and friends, the love and legacy I leave behind me when my days are long gone...quilts matter

My Nana sewed, my Momma sewed, all by hand. My sisters all sew, I am the only one that makes quilts.
I love the peace and joy I find in the world through quilts, quilting people are awesome !!
caring sharing giving. It is a wonderful, creative, happy place to be in the world. the world of quilters.
I am not good with words, but I am sure every quilter will understand what I am trying to say.
I love every single step in the process. the best part and why they matter most, to me... is giving them away. stitched with love and stuffed with hugs.
this looks like a very interesting series!! would love to win. Thanks for the chance.
Quilts matter to me because it is such a strong link to family history. My grandmother was a quilter & sewed for the public, Mom sewed garments for us girls. I have had a love affair with needle & thread for "fifty years"....wow, and sometimes I feel like a beginner. Quilting is my art, my passion, my form of giving. My day is not complete without at least a few minutes of stitching. Thanks for the chance to own these DVD's.
I love reading the history of quilts . . . would love to see this series . . . thanks Bonnie for always keeping us informed . . . car19.rbfd@gmail.com
Quilts matter because they are something we can give to show love and caring for those who mean something to us.

Quilts are love, history, warmth, art, and can be big, small or something in between. Quilts can be relaxing, nerve racking, and something in between. Quilts make me smile! Judi AKA judib@gvtc.com
Quilts allow me to show my creativity in a way that can be enjoyed and used for my family and future generations in a loving manner. Thanks so much for sharing.
I think "Quilts Do Matter" for so many reasons. Thanks for the chance to win this wonderful giveaway!
Quilts matter because there is history and love stitched into them.and they have given me a purpose in life,I will never be board again, keeps my brain busy too.BernieWalsh100@Yahoo.ie
Quilts matter to me because so much of my life revolves around them. My grandmother and great grandmother quilted when I was very young, so I always knew about quilts, and was the lucky recipient of a few. My bucket list contained "learn to quilt", and in 2000 I took a class. Then I joined a guild. Then I got completely hooked! I have so many quilter friends, 2 retreats each year plus as many road trips and get togethers as we can manage! I had no idea how extensively quilts would change my life!
Quilts matter for so many reasons. I would love to have this series to learn and share.
Quilts matter to me because I see it as a legacy to those who will come after me. I have no children. I do have nieces and a nephew as well as two sisters. It is a comfort to me as I make my quilts to think they will go to "live" with these people I love someday and be a part of the fabric of THEIR lives.
There are many quilters in my family. Starting with my Great Grandmother to my Grandmother and my aunts. I am proud to say that I have several quilts that were made by my Grandmother for me and my aunts. marthapatterson49@yahoo.com
Quilting matters to me because it's my own - my only thing in my life that is about me, for me and it's no one's place to tell me how or what I can or cannot do with a quilt. Besides, how else are grown ups supposed to play with color?
Quilts are an important history in my family. I have the first quilt I ever made with my grandmother over sixty years ago. I remember every stitch made on that Singer treadle machine. My grandmother, mother, aunts and sister all quilted. I am the lone quilter in the family now but all of my grandchildren have a keepsake like my first log cabin doll quilt made with my grandmother.
Quilt do matter -- as wonderful way to study history and personally they are a beautiful art form. I would love to receive a copy of why quilts matter.
Quilts represent some of the best aspects of our lives - loved ones that make or receive quilts, our past history through bits of cloth that we once wore, a connection to family members long gone. The beauty of a quilt makes people happy and warm, transmitting the work of the quilter into an 'on-demand' hug. Quilts can unite generations and promote the causes of peace and healing. There is nothing negative about a quilt!
For me quilts matter because they connect the past to the future. I remember being so cozy under my grandmothers quilts, when I went to visit. In turn I have quilts on my beds. And to continue the link I am making my 28 grandchildren their own quilt and plan on making charity quilts as they get old enough to sew.
Quilts matter because they are a form of art. They are also a form of entertainment. Some are historical and that matters to the culture. And if I win the DVD I will learn scores more reasons why they matter. Mimi in Texas
Hello Bonnie,
Quilts matter to me because it is a nice balance to all the !must do and have to do" we have in our lifes,
And I just love to re-use all kinds of material for my quilts.
Thank you for sharing your ideas with us and the chance for winning.
hugs, Doris
Quilts are important to me because they represent joy in my life. Joy of creation, joy of giving, joy of friendship. I would love to win the series. Thanks for the chance.
Bonnie, this series sounds so interesting and informative. Quilts do matter! Would love to have the video. Please pick me. richter@wcta.net
Quilts matter to me because as a mom of 6, I needed that time for meand to be able to stay calm and relax even on stressful days and to help me keep my creative art designing ideas to stay . It helps me to give love to my kids in another special way and give them warmth and to family members and friends any clients that has had me make something for them. Quilts matter to me cuz if I didn't have this I think I would lose my mind .lol and I would forget everything lol and most of all I believe the angels tell me this is what I was meant to do.

Quilts do matter - so much! This series sounds very interesting and I would love to be able to show it to the new sewists and wannabe quilters that I mentor through church!
Why quilts matter? It is the connection between me and my maternal grandmother (who passed away 20+ years before I was born). Even though I never knew her, I grew up admiring her quilts. And today, I still feel like we have a connection because we shared the love of working with fabric.
Beth - the_durigs@frontier.com
Quilts matters they are made and given with the love that goes into them. The receiver always knows when they are wrapped in a quilt that they are getting a little hug. Quilting is also very therapeutic to the soul and mind. Thanks for the chance to win.

I would love to win this series! Pick me!
Quilts matter to me as it was a connection to my mother. She was a quilter and I learned to quilt from her long distance. We would talk on the phone about methods and our various projects. I'd take my finished tops and quilts for a trunk show when I'd go visit. We'd have a retreat while I was there. What a wonderful time we'd have!
Janet Mikes jmikes94@yahoo.com
Quilts matter to me because my grandmother made quilts for each of her grandkids (all by hand), my mom made quilts for all of her grandkids that were born while she was still alive. I love the history of quilts and have always been fascinated with how pioneer women made them.
I would love to be able to share this series with my MOM. Thanks for the contest and all you do!
I have seen most of the shows. It was well done and would love to sit down and see them all in one sitting. Quilts matter to me because it is a way of connecting with all the women in my life. My great grandmother whose treadle machine was then used by my grandmama and then my mom and aunt learned on it. I cleaned it up a few years ago and the stories it would tell if only it talked. I have another great grandmother's quilt and my paternal grandmother
s yo yo quilt/bed cover. Quilts do matter!
Quilts sure do matter! thanks for the chance to win this awesome giveaway.
I love making quilts, especially when they are for others. Some take a while, but they are more precious when done. I only wish I had some from my Grandmother.
I teach elementary school children how to quilt - nothing is so exciting as introducing a child to the concept of creating their own fabric, choosing other fabric and backing then creating their own quilt! This series would give me a whole new level of information to share! Thanks for the opportunity!

I would love to win this. I've been able to watch some of the series on TV here in PA, but not all of it. It is a wonderful series and I learned a lot of history from it.
Quilts matter to me for many reasons. I have a lot of health issues that give me lots of pain, and even if I get 10 minutes a day or a couple hours or I can just sit and dream going thru magazines, it makes me feel better. I have also found a whole group of wonderful friends to quilt with. I love feeling like I'm doing something positive by making donation quilts. It has totally changed my life!!! Sonya Wood. Sonyawood@tds.net
Quilting connects like no other art form! Sometimes the materials used are new; sometimes they are borrowed; sometimes thay are recycled! We share ideas and tips and techniques...even share needles! ;). Not a bad thing, in this case!
I would love to own that series! Thanks for the chance!
Quilts matter because they are a part of our heritage. Also because they are an extremely useful by-product of our need to create. They are not only useful, but a work of art, as well.

Quilts are history...the history of who we were and are. And my grandson settles down faster under my quilt.

What can I say that 510 people haven't already said! Great series to own and share! Thanks Bonnie for sharing so much with so many : ) anneofchelsea@hotmail.com (Anne from Chelsea Quebec Canada)
Would love this! It sounds very thought provoking.:)
Quilts matter because they come from the heart and are given away with love. Every quilt is a personal story and a part of someone's past.
Quilts matter to me because it links people to people whether it be man, woman or child. I've often wondered what a maker was thinking, doing, living when looking at a quilt. I feel enriched living now and being able to see and learn what I'm sure other quilters would have loved if they were living in our time.
I would love to see this series. It was not on my PBS station. Thanks for the chance to win it.
Why quilts matter is the same reason that any ART matters...Our expression in this way is who we are. The process of making quilts can be cathartic. The finished product a balm to the soul for both maker and recipient!
Thanks for the chance to win the series.
Putting quilts together for me is like painting a picture. It brings such peace and satisfaction. Takes me somewhere where I need to go. Have had the good fortune to meet so many wonderful girls along my journey, I am so grateful.
Quilts matter because they are so full of information and insight into the life of the quiltmaker. My dear great aunts (Sallie and Annie)made scrappy quilts that are works of art but they were made to keep their loved ones warm. They had virtually no money but we are rich in our quilt heritage. I think about quilts everyday...get inspiration for color combinations everywhere. Oh, boy, do quilts matter! (sally in sc......jspwarren at aol dot com
Quilts matter to each one of us for different reasons. For me it is a form of "warm love to wrap my boys bodies with from Mom". My boys are grown, married, with kids of their own.
Quilts matter because you are giving of yourself.
I'm new to quilting in my retirement from teaching first grade--- LOVE it!
I am blessed to have a signature signed by my great grandmother, grandmother and various other relatives on my fathers side. When I make a quilt, I know that I am continuing a tradition that has gone on for years. Everyone needs some connection to the past, quilting is one of mine.
That sound awesome

Quilts matter because they are a wrap-up of love from the past, present and future. Pick me, I would love to own this DVD.
It's an amazing series, and I am proud to be part of it. Since I already know about it and have the DVD and guide, I would be OK if you chose someone else. Everyone who loves quilts should have a chance to see this series!
Quilts matter because they are full of history, love, and art.....that's all very important to those of us that love what we do...Kat Knapp

Quilts are a little history lesson for us, and they make us feel warm about our shared stories.
I'd love to win this series. Have only seen part of one episode and would love to see and share the others with our guild members.
