Retreat Day #2, Let’s Sew Log Blocks!

AL_Jan2014 193
There are an amazing group of women here at retreat that are working on this project TOGETHER –and donating the completed quilt to Quilts of Valor.

When I found this out, I was very excited, and heart-touched that these women would use their precious retreat time ((That we all know doesn’t come around often enough..not NEARLY)) to make a quilt to be gifted to someone that they personally do not know.

We all know that many hands make lighter work, and we were all inspired to keep sewing by watching their project grow, seemingly overnight!

At first there were a few stars…

And before we knew it blocks were sewn into rows….

And rows were being joined together!

By late evening last night….we had a reveal:

Quilt Center Done!!  WOW!

These ladies did awesome work, and I know it isn’t easy to have three or more people working on a project and having the blocks turn out the same size and fit.

We started the class by measuring units and making sure all units were the same size so that they WOULD fit, no matter which machine they were sewn on.

This beauty just needs borders…some quilting….some binding…a label…and it will be off to greatly thank some unknown soldier for the job he/she has done.

Thank you Ladies!

There are other quilts to share, other color ways coming along just as well.  I’ve uploaded them into a slide show below for your enjoyment!

The soldiers who receive these quilts are truly blessed and we are blessed because of their service. Warms my heart. :)

The QOV quilt is gorgeous! Do you want to tell them about the block that is turned the wrong way?
Third row from bottom, two in from the right.

Beautiful! This pattern is on my bucket list. Love the QOV approach - and a fabulous finished top at end of retreat: nice!

I hope you are able to get home with the snowy, icy, cold weather we are having here in No. Ohio that I believe is headed your way.

Thanks for sharing

I love that quilt. Going to propose it to our QOV. Right now we are doing one of your simpler quilts. It is also nice to see that even big groups with a lot of eyes miss errors in blocks. It makes the quilt more special in my eyes.

All of the quilts are awesome! Where can I get the pattern (unless it's too complicated)?

I love this QOV on all levels!! The quilt is beautiful and so is the message sent to the soldier and his/her family. And I believe that is called a humble block...:).
I would love to make one of these quilts...are their specific patterns for the QOV?

How wonderful it is that they devote their time and skill to our wounded soldiers. My Grandson Kenny was attacked by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan 2 years ago. He was critical for a time, but thankfully he recovered, although not without some lasting injuries. He was given a quilt of valor when he arrived in Germany for a surgery before coming back to the usa. He was so impressed with it.

I wasn't being critical about the wrong way block. It just jumped out at me, and I thought maybe they'd have time to fix it if they wanted to.

If you would like to help QOV, go to their web page QOV.org and it will tell you all about the organization. I do longarming for QOV. Feb 1st is National QOV sewing day.. You can sew with a group or sew on your own. You must go on the QOV website and register by Jan 30th. The web site tells about the size of the quilts they want. It also gives a update on how many service people have been killed. Hope everyone can make a difference.. They appreciate it so much

Wish you could all see the quilt in person - it is absolutely exquisite! Pieced very well (except for the "Amish Humble" block - I think I overheard a discussion on that block - HAHA!) and I can't wait to see the finished quilt with the border and then again after quilting and binding.

We were very blessed to have Bonnie with us this weekend; we learned lots and laughed lots and had a great time. Thank you, Bonnie, for coming to LA (Lower Alabama) to spend time with us and we hope you visit us again soon!!
