Quilt-Cam 9/14/2013

How much can you get done while watching Quilt-Cam?

It takes a LONG time to finish a quilt you’ve been putting off – so get it out and just DO IT!

This email came from Priscilla:

I'm visiting my friends in British Columbia and we have been making your crumbs and have finished two quilts in three days from scratch.
Isn’t this gorgeous?

She made her crumb strips blocks be the center of large stars…2 quilts in 3 days from SCRATCH!  Awesome!  Loving that orange one at the top!  And the crumby sashings...whoowhooo!

I don’t know about you, but autumn gets me in the mood for All. Things. Orange.

This is what made my heart swoon at Sam’s Club this morning while I was picking up more mailing envelopes:

sowalong 025

Can you ever have too much orange? I don’t think so!

sowalong 028

An Orange THING by Volkswagen crossed my path at the intersection this morning!

Remember these?  I lived not too far from Santa Cruz, California growing up – and I thought this would be the perfect beach mobile.  I never got one.  I’m amazed that there are still some of these running around out there!

sowalong 029

MORE ORANGE!!

This is the “TIME OUT” quilt.  It’s been in “TIME OUT” for a long time, and now that I know what to do with it…I’ll be working on those square-in-a-square cornerstones today during Quilt-Cam.  I need like 50-gazillion of them.

I’ve decided that paper piecing is going to be the best way for me to do this since I am working with random scraps and don’t want to have to iron to pre-cut to sew.

Just dropping by from Perth Western Australia to say hi. It is 2.15am here so I will probably drop off to sleep listening to Quilt Cam but hey that's ok. Love listening to you tips and anecdotes Bonnie.

Our guild is thinking of getting a camera that would allow us to show (on screen) what is being worked at by someone at a machine or table ... too many people crowded around a table doesn't make for comfortable working or viewing. Hopefully I have explained that clearly. What type of camera are you using for QuiltCam? I know you watch yourself on your laptop but what is projecting it to your laptop? Thanks ~ Linda

So glad you have getting some rest. Very grateful for QuiltCam and all you do for all of us. It is such a nice cool day that I decided to work on my scrappy batik sweatshirt jacket. You have inspired me!

How fun to see you working on square in a square blocks, too. I am making mine using your instructions @ Quiltville, and am making them @ 4" finished. They are the next round of my Chunky Churndash, as I am "growing" it to be queen-sized.

Twice each year, I go on a quilt retreat and invariably people at work will ask what I am going to do - or did - with my time off. When I tell them that I go to a quilt retreat, they do sometimes say that quilting is for old people. Well, if that's their take on it, I'm fine with it. I've made wonderful friends and done things I never thought I would, all because of quilting.

I saw this quote on a website: "He who cuts his own wood is warmed twice, but she who makes her own quilt is warmed forever."

Today I'm working on cleaning out my room as it needs to be presentable for a friend coming tomorrow. I'll also be sewing some 9 patch blocks for a guild exchange for Monday.
Thanks for QuiltCam and all you do! Its nice to sew with someone.

Thanks Bonnie for all you do for us. I only recently started watching quiltcam and just love it. Hoping to see you in 2014 in Sault Ste Marie, MI.

Home and ready to sew some this afternoon with you. I had to go and see a Lamb get sheared at our local Sheep to Shawl event with my Lace Group. Ready to sew some Bonus Triangles into 5.5" blocks. I told the young people at the Fair that I call Paper-piecing "stitching by the numbers".

As you are sewing square in a square blocks, I am hand quilting today. When I finished the top I am working on, I said it would be my granddaughter's wedding gift. She was 10 at the time. Well, now she is 20 and will be getting married Thanksgiving weekend so I need to get it quilted and bound!

Hi, Bonnie! I haven't been able to catch Quilt Cam in forever, and this quiet time is most welcome after a crazy week.

I'm de-boning some shirts while I watch. I've found some lighter, brighter plaids and stripes lately, and I like how they brighten up my shirt stash, which can get very dark and somber if I'm not careful. I love working with shirts, thanks to you!

Hi Bonnie,

So good to finally watch and hear you again since I usually miss your quiltcam's these days.

Well all my fabrics and quilting stuff are all in boxes as I've just moved house and still unpacking.

Was all set to join you for quilt cam for the first time but then an old friend who I haven't heard from in ages called me for a chat so plans changed. Managed to catch the last few minutes with you though. Planning some sewing time tomorrow and am clearing the decks ready. Hope to catch quilt cam in full soon but the time difference makes it difficult.

Priscilla, luv that quilt! Bonnie, have a wonderful time in OR. what a beautiful time to be in the great northwest!

Thanks, Bonnie!! Just what I needed to figure out my table runner! Took me the whole quilt-cam but I did it!!

Bonnie, maybe it's true that, "Quilting is for old people," but young teens sure do love receiving a quilt of their own!

50 bagillion is a great number!

Bonnie K. Hunter said...

Of course! START WITH A BIGGER PIECE! :) You have to have more than 1/4" around when paper piecing.

SO happy that you tuned in, Andee!!

Hi Bonnie,
happy me, caught you again on your web cam * :o)*
The ORANGE THING from VW is original constructed for military use and we call it "Kübel" = vat/ bucket.
Have a nice time

Does the glue you're using affect the fabric? Do you need to wash it out?

I love it too Priscilla!! I have a ton of bits and pieces around here. That would be a great idea and really quick to work up for charity quilts.... not to mention it would help me clean up my sewing room!

Thanks Priscilla!

SO glad to catch you again. And nice to hear that someone else doesn't use the 1/4" or 1/8" rulers either. I hand piece miniature foundation blocks on muslin, and discovered how much easier it was just to eyeball the trimmed seam. I also am faster handstitching than machine sewing. LOL

Bonnie, Watched this on YouTube! I have the same curtains in my kitchen! Wow! Thanks so much for your help. I am not goof at paper piecing. Your ideas are so helpful! Have a great time"

Love the quote, thanks for sharing. I am going to make a wall hanging (small) for my sewing room with that quote machine embroidered. ;-)

I agree!!! I finally now know what I will do with all the crumb blocks (I never knew what to call them - thanks to you, Bonnie, I know that I am on the right track. And thanks to Priscilla's quilt, I now have some ideas as to what to do with them.
