Having a great time with Jason in Charlotte--
We stopped for lunch at Fridays, and are walking the aisles of ikea looking for must-haves.
On the agenda are a couple Billy bookcases –
And I have found a kitchen island that will double as a fabulous cutting table and organizational space in the basement studio –
Too much inspiration! What's a girl to do?
Oh – and we loved the "grandfather clock" wall sticker – you place your own clock as the face to decorate the space that doesn't have room for a real grandfather clock! :-)

Bonnie,
You're going to love that kitchen island. I have one that my husband attached a piece of plywood (35.5" x 71")on top of that beautiful butcher block. It's just the right size for that 3-piece Olfa cutting mat so I have an awesome cutting surface that is just the right height for me. Then he also added a shelf below the Ikea bottom shelf so I could store my light box and spare mats, etc. Eight baskets where I store my scraps complete the picture.
That island would make an awesome cutting table!
I also have an IKEA island in my sewing room! Before assembling it, I put a layer of thin batting, then a layer of heat proof batting (can't remember the name right now - having a senior moment), then a layer of cotton fabric and voila! a great ironing table with drawers and storage underneath. I have the slightly smaller island that is 2 drawers, but it has wheels on one end, so I can keep it against the wall most days, but scoot it out when I'm ironing a quilt top or large pieces of fabric. Love it!
Love the "island" idea. I also love the "Billy" bookcases. I have quite a few in my house. I have added to them over the years and Ikea ALWAYS has them. They hold a lot of books without sagging. I haven't tried storing fabric on them, tho. Fabric is much heavier than books!
You've got a cute kid there too! Always glad when they want to see Mom!
Glad you have time to spend with your son. Great cabinet. I have an Ikea Varde 12 drawer cabinet which I believe has been discontinued. I use it as a cutting table too. ,its just the best!!
humm... so i have space for that island?
So glad you are getting to spend some fun time with your boy and having lots of fun. Happy times!
I also have that island to use as my cutting area...but I am considering finding a larger top because I feel like I can never get enough space!!!
It has fantastic storage and it is SUPER sturdy!
What a fabulous way to recharge -- spending time with your out of town son! Enjoy the time with your family this week.
Sweet times with your "little." They are always are littles aren't they? Ikea has such fun stuff.
But did Jason like your shirt? You wore it right? ;)
OOH Bonnie Grab that Varde kitchen Island while you can! I had planned on doing that line in both my kitchen, and studio, and it is discontinued, and only available in 1 or 2 locations, so when it is gone... IT'S GONE! Lucky you!
I saw a sewing island on pinterest that uses ikea bookcases. The instructions were on Ikea Hackers website. They also attached wheel to bottom for moving.
Glad you had a great day. What are the dimensions on the top of that island unit. I've thought about getting something like that to put the big board on top of.
I bought the same kitchen unit when we built my sewing studio as recommended in the book Creating Your Perfect Quilting Space and it has been so useful. The top is great and perfect height for me, but I am short. I use the 3 drawers for all sorts of notions, odd rulers and various size mats, and one is mostly thread and pins. The 2 shelves hold all the projects I am currently working on - or those next in the queue. Underneath are small bins with various items--binding ends, other projects, etc. And my husband bought me a gel mat to go where I stand to cut.
love the clock...and the cutting table! the back of my sons car is full of boxes...he says he moving...really? when?!
I love IKEA!! I took my hubby there for the first time last week. And guess what? He was looking at that same table ;-) Not for quilting though!
What is a billy bookcase? I have never heard that term.
Hi Bonnie, Christina in Cleveland here. I thought of you when someone on the "wefixit" yahoo group posted this listing from Ebay for a "lot" of vintage machines. I'm still drooling.

I hope you are enjoying this listing as much as I am.

I have that same Ikea cabinet in my quilt studio. I also have a matching shelving unit backed up to it, giving me about 40" depth by almost 70" in width. I love them both! Grab that cabinet while you can find it.
Love the bookshelves! What a clever idea to use the kitchen island as a cutting table & storage area!
Loved the examples above!!!!
I have several bookcases from IKEA, they are the best for fabric storage....and I also was gifted the island butcher block and it is perfect for use as a cutting table....it is similar to the one you have shown....mine has doors tho....love IKEA stuff...
Hi Bonnie,
Glad you were able to have quality time with Jason, what fun! Makes me want to spend time with my son. Anyway I have that exact island from IKEA in my sewing room, love, love, love it!!!
Have a great day.
Lisa
I love my billy book cases for holding fabric!
Look at the Alex drawer unit at Ikea! It is fabulous, holds a ton, and it is so simple to find something in it because the drawers are fairly shallow, even the deeper ones at the bottom. I am trying to find room for a second one in my longarm studio (a bedroom barely big enough for my Innova and my sewing table).
