My family heritage on my mother’s side of the family is German, and many family treats have been passed down through the years.
My family recipe for Pfeffernüsse cookies is found in String Fling, along with the Pfeffernüsse quilt pattern,
My quilt is shown in the yummy warm and spicy brown tones of the cookies themselves echoing in the string blocks, and accented by the red to pink shades of the pinwheels formed by spinning, tumbling hour glass units.
My students weren’t limited to brown and red, however! Just check the slide show below!
You know my eyes were on the presence of any vintage machines in attendance!
Amongst our numbers were these beauties:
Millie, the 301A belonging to Allison
Janet’s sweet little Spartan!
And a gorgeous little 99k belonging to another Quilter!
The hum of a multitude of featherweights also filled the air with their sweet sound ----I had plenty of vintage goodness to pet and visit with!
I’ve also been privileged with the use and company of “Lola” A sweet featherweight on loan for my time in Texas! Lola belongs to Allison, and she is a champ! Here she is with the cute notes and accessories that welcomed her into my temporary hotel home during my stay here --- and she has been quite happily humming away, surrounded comfortably by my Feather-Mate table by Sewingmates!
This is the first time the Feather-Mate table has traveled with me and it is WONDERFUL – surrounding the Featherweight on only 2 sides – it fits in my suitcase easily and doesn’t take up “too much” of my limited desk space here at the hotel.
I can see why these would make GREAT class room and retreat tables ---our classes were packed the past 3 days and those who came with “standard” 18" X 24” tables found they were really too big and almost encroaching on their neighbor’s table space. Sometimes less is more when traveling and in classroom situations!
Today is a “Day Between” for me. The plan is to head over to Allison’s in the morning for some fun sewing time with her, along with her friend Cindy. I’ll also throw some laundry in her wash ---life on the road, you know?
Tonight – family dinner with the Brother & Sister-in-law! We are heading to Southern Junction for a bit of Texas Tradition ---this is the place we went last year where everything is Texas Sized, and you grill your own steak on the grill…..it’s all about the social aspect white trying to not turn your steak into a piece of overly-done jerky. LOL! We love it there, and have to go back every time we come.
Thursday moves us up to McKinney – and I start my fun couple of days with the Quilt Asylum there for a lecture and a Virginia Bound workshop!
I told you 2013 was going to be a busy one!

spooky.. i just popped the last of my Christmas Pfeffernüsse into my mouth as i opened your post. Delicious, just like your quilt.
As like Sheila, I was munching on pfeffernusses as well. Also had Springerlies to choose from. I hope to get my great grandmother's rolling pin when my mom passes. At least I get to eat the cookies now.
gorgeous, gorgeous quilt! I love the brown and red combination! Of course, I love Pfefferneuse too. I know what my next project is, after Easy Street.
Glad to have the slide show back. Love to see everyone's choice of fabric and of course, the machines. Makes me want to start a new quilt, but must finish Easy Street and several others first! LOL
I knew what pfeffernuesse were. But I had no illusions that you were baking.
i agree with lilac joan!!! easy street is coming together (after cleaning the machine this morning)...but i love this quilt..guess i gotta order the book and put it in the "to do"...i'm thinking red, white, blue and golds for an army friend...mmmmm...back to easy street!!
Happy New Year Bonnie from California! What a beautiful pattern and quilt! Our family celebrates the German holiday traditions like Nickolaus and we had our fill of pfeffernusse cookies in December. Yum!
Texas is an ancestral homeland of mine. The DFW area is one of the best places I've ever lived with some of the nicest people, so you're in very good company! In fact, I have two, upcoming clean fiction novels slated incorporating my two loves of Texas and quilting, so I'm off to a good start in 2013. Sounds like I'd have to considerably pick up the pace to keep up with you though! Oh, and my TX cousins taught me early-on that "all y'all" is the plural of "ya'all." I almost felt like a native having that bit of info in my pocket. ;)

I love Pfeffernüsse cookies, too. My mom baked a big batch this year and shared, so I haven't tried your recipe yet, but I plan to next Christmas. And this quilt pattern is definitely on my 'someday' list.
Happy New Year, Bonnie, and safe travels!
Loved meeting you and being in this fun class. I see my block in the slide show and my lap and floor covered with strips....what a great day! Happy New Yesr and look forward to the next time I see you...
Bonnie I just love the pfeffernüsse pattern, is it in one of your books? Loved looking at all the pictures from your class. Thanks for taking the time to post them.
Gwen
Thanks so much for giving the info about the pfeffernusse pattern! I fell in love with it when I saw it and fortunately I have a copy of your book String Fling...so bonus :) Happy New Year!
I love doing the pfeffermuse pattern in your newest book. I must say that it is one of the quilts that I have finished. The cookies that the quilt is named after,I to do remember sitting on a couch at my aunt's house in the middle of the nigh with her and she gave one of those cookies she was from Germany. Love looking at all the pictures from Plano.
I bought a 301A a couple months ago just like Allison's. I named her Myrna. (Remember Myrna Loy?) She really looks like a Myrna to me. Love these old machines!!
I just went back and re-read your post Bonnie and I didn't even see the part about the pfeffernüsse pattern being in the String Fling book. Guess I was to busy looking at the awesome pictures... lol
Gwen
When I get home from my time in Iowa, I will have to check out that quilt! Darn......
