Hi Bonnie, I have the same foot controller on my Featherweight. I use my left foot to sew for 2two reasons. First, with too much sewing or driving, my right butt becomes inflamed, Second, can reach that foot control button much better with my left foot. Give it a try--just takes a bit of getting used to. Just wanted to say how much I love the community that has been created at Quiltville.com. It's amazing to me how quilting just takes you to another time and place - where no matter what is going on in your life, you can let it all go and relax. I wonder if the ladies in generations past felt the same?

Bonnie, Have you thought about using your Janome 6500 as it has the stop/start button so you do not have to use your foot pedal at all. Just a suggestion from one quilter with a lower back issue to another!!! Take care of yourself, we need you healthy as we all love you!

My first machine was a 1950s White in a cabinet with a knee bar. It was my grandmothers, a straight stitch machine and it sews like a dream. Its in a big cabinet and I have no where to open it or I would use it all the time. Maybe a vintage machine with a knee bar rigged up would help.
Hi Bonnie, I have to thank you for quilttime. Your needle and thread challenge last month was one that was very difficult for me. I do NOT like sewing by had. I have been working slowly on a table topper now for about two years by quilting it by had. I would come up with excuses to work on it. When your challenge came out last month, I decided to join and use the time while watching you on quiltcam to work on this topper. Thank you for the inspiration to keep moving on, moving on this project. I am now about 3/4th done. I hope to have it finished in in a few weeks, you make the time go quickly! Thank you.
I did find after I had a knee replacement last year I could use my left leg/foot to push on the foot petal with good control of speed after only a tiny bit of practice. Does not help with the drive the car as I cannot do that with left foot. Dorothy (yes still crocheting this evening)

Glad I'm able to catch a few minutes of your quilt cam this evening. Unfortunately no time to sew yet, had to empty the dishwasher and do some "boring" house catch up work. Wanted to let you know that I am the proud owner of a Singer Machine that was born on November 7, 1927 in Elizabeth NJ. A friend was visiting West Virginia and found it for me for $15.00 or 1.5 yards of fabric (depending on how you think about it) LOL. In any event I'll be taking it to "my guy" and see if he can make it work. It's so exciting. Enjoy your evening of sewing - maybe I can do a few minutes before calling it a night. Carmela in PA
Bonnie, about how much cheddar background fabric (in yds.)did you start with? When you do a large quilt, how much fabric do you figure you will need for a background...what is your rule of thumb?

I am sewing cheddar bow ties, too. I was watching the debate and sewing, but it was too exasperating. Turned it off and came over to quilt cam instead.
Orvus soap is what I usually use, and I really miss my top loading washer where I could soak things and then let them drain. Not happy with a front loader at all!
I was watching most of the presidental debate and only caught the last few min of quilt cam and bowties. I was working on hand-sewing the blocks for my son's class quilt. My bowties are on hold until that gets done. I think they are going to be my long-term take-along project... like hexies are for you.
Tip the head back and look for 2 screws along the back holding it to the hinges you use to raise and lower it, release the screws and lift off. You now have a portable head and, once you release the power pedal from the side of the cabinet, you can go anywhere with it and just use the power pedal with your foot! Any model mounted in a cabinet can be liberated to use without the cabinet (cabinets were selected separately from machine heads and then mounted when gotten home!)

I am sitting here watching you sew and noticed you don't use any pins, how do you keep your seams matched. I think I use as many pins as I do thread.
