iPhone-o-Gram! Chicago to Boise!

I met Jason's plane and the first thing he said was "what?!!! Enough with the camera already!"

What's a mom supposed to do when she sees her son ready to join her on an Idaho Adventure??

I also brought my purple "sit upon"--- plane seats are just terrible and the flight to Boise is 4.5 hours. Something has to give with the burning leg pain. I think I'm in for an MRI when I land at home long enough to get one.

Next stop---Boise!!

I just went through that leg pain thing which started with back pain. Sciatic nerves are the culprit, generally. I'm better now. It took 3 months, 8 chiropractor treatments and Ibuprofen to make things right again. Good luck.

Cute purple sit-upon. I could use one of those. Did you get it from the Dr.? I would appreciate info on it when you have time. That looks like it would be great for taking to workshops, etc. You fill us with so many ideas and info. Thanks so much and enjoy yourself!

My back pain improved after getting 2 cortizone shots in my spine. Oral steroids and physical therapy didn't touch the pain. The shots were magic.

I had a sciatic pain episode a few years ago and chiropractor, iburprofen and time worked but it seemed to take quite a while. I also did leg stretches before getting out of bed in the morning but what I think helped the most were cold packs when I sat. I know it's not feasible to take them with you when you travel but they work great at home. We make them by putting karo syrup in gallon zip lock bags. A couple jars per bag works pretty well. Then zip that bag into another bag in case of leakage. Then freeze. They don't freeze solid so are pliable like the blue ones you can buy from the doctor's office. Hope that helps. The purple seats are also available at rehab places (not in purple though) and some quiltshops. Quiltshows always have them.

How come I missed that you are going to Idaho? Will you be teaching there or just vacationing? And if you're vacationing, be sure to visit Granny's Attic in McCall (Payette Lake, 'nuf said) and The Idaho Quilt Barn in Kimberly (near Twin Falls). Say "Hi" from Aunt Marti!

Sounds like you are headed down the path to getting epidurals or nerve root blocks for that leg pain. That is awful for you.

I went thru the scaitic thing too and now it's my periformis muscle giving me fits. My chiro tells me it's a long time to get over, ugh!! Have a great time....

Lugging the duffle bags of quilts and lifting boxes of books probably does not help your back. From someone who did the same things in her youth and had surgery five years ago, take care of the one back the Good Lord gave you.

Try sitting on a tennis ball! I had the same thing and always resort to my balls! lol
When I'm sitting, I find the spot where it's sore or where I can get the most relief and sit on it - it applies pressure to the area - your own accu-pressure. You can also move your hips slowly back and forth for your own massage of the area.
When I'm lying down, I work the tennis ball(s) down my spine for a massage then find the sore spot on my lower back apply the pressure by lowering my body weight on it(them) - relieves the pain. Does this make any sense?
I've used it for years now - pain was shooting right down to my foot and with some pressure and (self) massage by moving back and forth on the ball (slowly), I've worked the spasm, knot, kink or whatever out.
I've taken the tennis balls with me to quilting retreats (I have them in a long sock so I can move it with my hands over my shoulder), and my friends have a good laugh about my "sock balls".... It works for me! lol

By the way, I also tried one of those cushions - didn't help my pain but it very comfortable for sitting.

A little warning about the little purple cushion...they're easy to 'fall off of'! Really wiggly, so try it before you buy it. Bonnie...Have a WONDERFUL time with your son, Jason!

And, by the way it is a Mother's Prerogative to take all the photos she wants to of her son... I'm 45 and my mother still snaps photos of me every time she sees me...

I can sympathize with you re the leg and back pain. I am 20 years your senior, but still love machine piecing. I now only to do it in moderation. I have had a hip replacement, a total knee replacement and back surgery. If it ends up you need surgery, do it while you are young--it will set you back a little at first, but well worth it with rehab. Take care!!!

I so agree with Anonymous - I lived too long with sciatica pain and finally the chiropractor sent me to a neurosurgeon - had my back operated on and nary a pain after that. I'm 81 years old now and have arthritis but no sciatic pain. By the way - what is a URL?

My physical therapist told me to use a big bottle of Palmolive dish detergent (no other brand as others have to much water content and freeze too hard so don't allow the pack to be plieable). Same procedure -- double-bag in quart sizeFREEZER ziploc baggies. I've got 2 in the freezer I have used for the past 6 years. Just be sure to put something cloth, like a thin towel, between the ice pack and yoru skin and on't use for more than 20 min before removing for a bit.

BTW, I have foune I have to do leg stretches when I wake up, before bed and at least once during the day to stave off not the sciatica but shin splints and leg cramps --
