Remember I'm using Paris street scenes as the backing!!
I measured the wrong side of the quilt! And now my backing is WAY too short. If I turn it the other way ((which usually doesn't matter)) my Paris Cafes are going sideways.
This will NOT do!!
I think I'm going to inset something to make it look planned. Off to raid the orphan bin.

I too have struggles with a quilt I am working on. My backing was too narrow so I had to add a strip down the center to increase the size. I used a piece of border print which is incorporated in the pieced top. My problem was trying to sandwich it all together with the batting and get the strip down the center like I wanted it. I was up until midnight pin basting it after fighting for 2 hours to get it to lay together they way I wanted it. Ugh! I plan to machine quilt it tonight. Hopefully that will go more smoothly. I feel your pain! LOL!

I'm loving this quilt, Bonnie, no surprise there! AND I love your book, "Scraps and Shirttails", which I purchased in Portsmouth at the guild meeting. I've begun working thru my scraps cutting strips, blocks, and bricks!

I haven't tried this and haven't tried to work through it, but it's something to look at.
I just did that on the weekend only I didn't notice until it was over half quilted. It was a baby quilt and I decided that the back could go sideways as that is how it fit the best. Apparently fate said NO it has to go the same direction and when I got down to 6 inches left to quilt my backing ran out. You would think I would have noticed when it was wider than I expected.....LOL. Anyway, unpinned from machine added piece to backing then pin back on machine and complete quilting. It turned out great after all that. As mentioned above it's nice to know I'm not the only one who does this.
Would there be enough to cut off the excess then cut the excess to stack it so that the design is all going the right way? You may not even notice the design change because it's so busy. Or if you could see it add in some orphans, perhaps more of the quilts blocks. Well you've probably already considered this. So sorry Bonnie, Sandi
Thanks Boonie, I am the Queen of doing that. I know my machine quilters hate me, they always measure my backs twice and 1/2 the time they are too small.......and I am always sure they are ok......glad to see I am not the only one.....but you can fix, I am sure.......
I'm sorry you are in this predicament, but I'm glad to hear that it's not just me that does stuff like this. When I do something like this I feel dumb and like I'm the only one who could make this mistake.

A-HA! a creative solution will come of this, i am sure. Just think of the streets of Paris, pull something that looks like pavement, and you're all set.
What about using smaller pieces of the backing, surrounded by "window" sashing/frames to make it appear that you are viewing the street scenes through large picture windows? It would make the piece larger and perhaps solve the size issue in a stunning way.
