Deck The Halls with Lots of Cookies! ((Free Cook Book))

I’m back from the dentist.  Dr Drill & Fill did a great job.  I actually LOVE HER!  Yes.  Her.  First time in my life I’ve had a female dentist and I’m wondering why I didn’t do it sooner?  Dr Mel is AWESOME.  She has a gentle voice, small enough hands to fit into my small mouth, and she HUMS while she works!

I tell you, as far as dentistry goes, she is a rare treat.  I sat there smiling – Okay, numb to the gills…to the point that even the right side of my NOSE was numb, and that nostril had closed due to numb numb numb – ((Repeat after me – NUMB IS MY FRIEND!)) –where was I?  OH, yeah, I sat there smiling….thinking of what a difference 50 years makes.

The movie we watched last night, The Help, was set in the early 60’s in Jackson MS.  Around the time I was born.  Today, I was having my dental work done, by an African American Female Dentist --- and loving it.  I wish I could take this scene….and project it to the characters in that movie so they could SEE just what would happen 50 years down the road.  And yes, I know the movie is fictional --- but so much of it was just the plain bare truth.  Was all the upheaval in the 60’s worth it? Yes.  Is the upheaval now worth it? Yes.

So --- how does this lead into cookies? Nowhere really, especially since I am so numb I can’t eat any!  I’m limiting myself to a sippy cup with a straw at this point because I can only smile out of one side of my face, and I’m going to AVOID dribbling on myself.

But this freebie came along, and I figured while we are getting ready for Christmas in just a few days, it might have some goodies to try!

Dear Bonnie--I just downloaded the free Kindle cookie recipe book--thank you so much--what a neat present! As soon as I get my Companion Angle (I already had the EZ one in my drawer and have dusted it off) I will begin the Orca--have you tried the Accuquilt cutter(s)? And what do you think of them? Did you note that the movie was set in 1962, the year you were born? Amazing that this sort of thing could happen in our lifetimes.

My dentist is a woman, too -- and I love her! Dr. Tao (http://www.usatopdentists.com/find-dentist/dentist-details.asp?dentist=clara+e.+tao&specialty=general%20dentistry&city=colorado+springs&state=colorado) has been my dentist for more than 15 years. She is so gracious and kind. Not many people love visiting their dentist, but I do!

Bonnie,
I was reading the intro to The Orca and see the quilt measurment is 74.5 x 84.5 does this include a border and also how much fabric for a backing it I use just one fabric. I see many stores are having end of year fabric sales.
Thanks

Have read The Help (Great Read)...waiting to view the movie. Although I have heard that it follows the book very closely. Different times to be sure and the upheaval was worth it on so many levels. Loving this Orca Bay mystery. Wishing your a speedy recovery and minimum of dribbles.

I, too, have a female dentist. Love her! I read The Help & am planning on watching it soon. Also hoping I get a Kindle Touch for Christmas.

Dearest Bonnie, I was born and raised in Auburn, Al and I can assure you no one we knew treated their "help" that way. I'm sure that was not the case in a lot of areas but in Auburn you treated everyone nicely or they would go to work for someone else. I was taught to respect and care for everyone regardless of color. When the first black student came to Auburn University he was met by a welcome committee! Loved the book and loved the movie. And I love you, Carolyn Ingram
p.s. You are driving me crazy with these little pieces but I'm not whining. And thank you. crylningram@yahoo.com

As a female dentist who quilts, I'm so happy to hear about your good experience today! I was going to say, I was "pulling for you," but that doesn't sound good in a dental context; my next choice was "rooting for you" -- not any better!

My GYN and my PCP are both women of color. I love that!
